About Shanty Creek
The 5,000 acres of Shanty Creek Resorts are spread among three villages - Cedar River, Schuss and Summit, each with at least one golf course, restaurant and accommodations galore. The Summit is arguably home base with the Lakeview Lodge housing the Lakeview Restaurant, the spa and the Legend and Summit golf courses. The resort added the Hawk's Eye course and accommodations across the street in 2021.Facts

This was a great course to play. I read many reviews about Hawk's Eye and they did not disappoint. I kept figuring that was going to be something wrong with this course but how cheap it was to play, The course had a great layout with some very pretty holes too, #17 was my favorite. It was one of the most difficult tracks that I have ever played. The greens were the fastest I had played all year. I enjoyed the challenge and this is a must play for any golf enthusiast.
Beautiful course; slow play
Hawks Eye is stunning to look at, especially the back 9. It is nestled in the woods, has challenging elevation changes, and water comes into play on many holes. Unfortunately, I had a lot of time to view the scenery, because the foursomes ahead of us were so slow. Our round took 5+ hours, which is not conducive to good golf. Where is a ranger when you need one? Still, I would go back because it is fun to play. By the way, there are senior tees, which makes the course more enjoyable for a banjo hitter like me.
One of our favorites in N. MI
Except for requiring 5 hours to play, all was very good as usual. We are always very pleased with this track.
Fun to play
Great shape and offers varying levels of difficulty!
A must play
Outstanding in all respects: course layout; tees, fairways and greens; variations in elevation; difficulty level; pace of play; you name it.... Eager to replay and we will soon.
Excellent Course!
Played on a Sunday afternoon during the holiday weekend. Extremely busy! Got behind a group of seven with three young kids. After the first hole, they split in to two groups. We got behind a dad and two young daughters, one who apparently had never played before. Couldn't pass them as the rest of the holes were backed up also. Fortunately they didn't go the back nine. Breezed through the back nine with no issues. Excellent course, not top-tier, but a fun course for hackers and families. Will definitely go back again.
Don't bother
Played many fine courses in this neck of the woods, unfortunately decided to give this one a try. Definitely a tier 3 level course. Scruffy areas leaving the tee boxes, no hole-long cart paths, greens surprisingly OK, several parallel holes a safety hazard. If you like scenic as we do, this isn't even close. Not worth the low price. Spend more and do The Legends, if they resume cutting the rough to a playable height..
great layout
If you like mountain golf, this course is the best value in N Michigan at the price.
#25 you can play in Michigan (Golf Digest)
Cedar River is one of my all time favorite courses. I'd play it every day if I was forced to. Sporty in areas and always challenging yet forgiving. An outstanding back nine routing with 3 3's, 3 4's and 3 5's. Except for the quirky short par 4 13th which you have to play 5 times or more to understand it. The 12th hole is one of my favorite par 4's to play and the par 3 14th downhill towards the Cedar River is always an adventure. Great facilities and in wonderful condition. 4.75 stars.....my only downgrade is the range which goes straight up hill so you don't get a good read on distance/flight paths when warming up. Well deserving of its place in the top 25 you can play in MI. A very good value if you play twilight or get a hotdeal.....and friendly folks. Several other courses nearby part of Shanty Creek - Legend, Schuss and Summit. Hawk's Eye and The Chief also nearby so you have 6 courses minutes from each other as well with the town of Bellaire down the hill where Short's Beer is located. All 6 are worth a play. Cheers!
Except the Bunkers in Really Good Shape
Hawk's Eye is always a fun play. Lots of elevation changes and challenging golf holes. You have to play this place a few times to get the hang of it. The ball bounds and bounds so you need to pay attention to the slopes and ground rolls. The tees, greens and fairways are in very good shape. Some of the bunkers need attention there are a few that are just rock filled. Welcoming staff and they now do finally have a range but downgrading the range but because it's dead downhill so while you can warm up there's no way to get a feel for how far you are hitting it or the true ball flight that day. Heartily recommend playing this....and note there are several other worth a play courses extremely near by including top 25 you can play in Michigan Cedar River at Shanty Creek which also has the Legend, Schuss and Summit courses. The Chief is also nearby so you could easily make a week out of it and enjoy the beauty and pleasure of NoMi golf with Short's Brewing Co in Bellaire for after round libations/food. Starlight Lounge is also an excellent post round place.
Top-Notch Conditions, Tricked up Layout
Paid $22.50 for 18/cart as part of their 2-For-1 Wednesday deal, no complaints there. Tee to Green is meticulously maintained and putts roll smooth and true everytime. The layout is gorgeous, elevation changes throughout, and surprises await at every tee box.
My only complaints are the green complexes can be a bit Tricked up, with massive mounding, and what appears to be elephants buried under a few of the greens. Also, many of the sand bunkers sit many of feet below the green surfaces. Also, the lack of Red, White, and Blue yardage posts was my biggest gripe, sometimes searching frantically through the fairway for yardage got to be a nuisance.
ALL and all, its extremely challenging and a great value.
Nice layout and in good shape.
Played for third straight year.Greens rollef well as did fairways.Coursr has nice views and elevation changes. GO play but do not use Golf Now mapping directions.
Brandon - thanks for your kind words. I travel to Northern Michigan at least once a season to play mainly at the Shanty Creek area courses and venture out to other courses from there from time to time. This year included an adventure to experience Marquette GC in the UP. I don't use twitter much but my handle is John Spotts@spottersgolf. Next on my list is figuring out a way to get on Culver Golf Course (Culver Academy in Indiana) which is a newly restored 100pct Langford/Moreau nine holer.....I'm a huge fan of their designs. Do you have any connects? Cheers sir and an honor to be contributor to the cause.
Were you just on a northern Mich golf trip? Thanks for all the reviews. Let me know if you have a Twitter or IG handle.
