The Cedar River at Shanty Creek
About
Shanty Creek in Bellaire is one of northern Michigan's most popular golfing destinations, offering 72 holes of championship golf. The Cedar River Course was Tom Weiskopf's first design in Michigan. It has been ranked as one of the top 100 resort golf courses in the country. The layout closely follows the natural contours of the landscape, providing a wealth of unique shot opportunities. The dramatic elevation changes define the traditional layout, which gives an excellent rhythm to the course. The course will appeal to low and high handicappers alike offering a mix of generous landing areas and ones that require accurate tee shots and approaches. The 13th and 14th holes are quite unique and located in the most scenic section of the golf course. They play across rolling hills framed by tall heather and fescue as well as strategically placed bunkers and trees.

I have not played in 15 years and it’s just the way I remembered it gorgeous
Well, we have not played this course in 15 years so they had customer appreciation going for $35 and I actually got a better deal on GolfNow so we’re two of us. We paid 41 bucks if you can believe it where they usually charge 100 bucks for in the summertime each, which I will not do sorry but anyway the course is in great shape just as hilly and Challenging as ever, but just beautiful and the homeless blend in very nicely.
It was very busy all the teatime for taking up so we went out with another couple and it worked out really great very nice people and it was about a 4 1/2 hour round which is almost normal beautiful cool Wednesday afternoon And thoroughly enjoyed. It played from the white switch. Was all that I need anymore used to play from the blues, but yeah, had a great time in winter to Hawkeye the next day.
Oxide was independent up until a few years back we played that once my buddy and I 10 years ago and they have Done a nice job there we got started late with a frost delay there I took a five hour round but from what I remember, yeah Hawkey a little more tricked up, but I had a great time great weather and thank you for shining Creek for putting on a good price for even a slow and then earners can still afford to play once in a while
Aging gracefully, still gorgeous !
I haven’t played this course in 15 years and they had a special goal for $35 this October customer appreciation so we booked that bus actually got a bigger discount on GolfNow but we got hooked up with another husband and wife team and a gentleman and I played for the White, which was a challenge at 6000 yards but I was very happy shooting a 92 and the layout and elevation changes in overall conditioning is just fabulous. It’s just as good as I remember being playing here in close to 20 years ago came up four years in a row. They used to have such a package where you could pay less than 100 bucks and get a night lodging and all the golf you could play unbelievable But yeah the course conditions are fantastic. We both enjoyed it and got paired up with a nice couple so we had a good time good electric power carts, not gas, which is good nice and quiet. The foliage was just turning not peak, but still pretty nice and had a great time. What can I say? I don’t think we’re gonna pay $100 each to play here but if you got the money that’s up to you but anyway we’ll see you next time. Yes very good time and worth a trip for sure especially for 35 bucks or less each
I actually played Hawkeye today the day after and we like Cedar River better than oxide spent 10 years since I played Hawkeye, but I think Hawkeye is tricked up a little bit. They really tried to make it harder than that Should be a lot of sand traps and just a lot of trouble to get into but Cedar River is a little bit more straightforward.
It was a fantastic deal with their October pricing. Best value in Northern Michigan. Our only criticism is they have allowed their first cut roughly to grow too long and when combined with leaves falling made it very difficult to find a ball only 2 feet from the fairway.
Good layout and conditions
Greens and fairways in good condition. Bachelor party in front of us playing scramble was pretty slow . 4 hrs 15 round . Should be 4 hours . No drinking water on course- ridiculous. Grumpy halfway house guy. Worth playing .
Great Course...need better pace of play enforcement
Me and two others were fortunate to play Cedar River Golf Course at Shanty Creek resort. The staff was very friendly upon arrival, check in was easy and we were off. When we got to the first tee, we were told they were 20-25 minutes behind due to the first groups of the day arriving 20 minutes later for their tee time. Why they let them still tee off in front of others who paid and were on time is beyond me. The same group that was late was also very slow, and the ranger told us and the group behind us that, "I have talked with them three times already, not sure what else we can do?" Please keep in mind the ranger told us this at either the 7th or 8th hole of the day. The course itself is beautiful, challenging, but fair, and the greens ran great! Please just keep all the customers in mind and get a hand on pace of play. Our round lasted over 5 and 1/2 hours, luckily our next course was able to move our tee time back an hour so we could still make it.
Cedar River
Good condition, lots of trees, a lot of up and down hills, large greens, generous fairways.
Excellent
Easiest course of the shanty courses but best greens fairways of all. Love this track. Have played many times and always enjoy and score well. Have fun
Good times - recommended course
Great layout with very few homes on the holes. Holes are separated from one another making the play safer and the scenery beautiful. Fairways are in good condition and greens are in great condition. Awesome weather made it extra nice!
On the downside, the grass on the range was pretty close to hitting off a mat. Don't let that turn you away because the course itself is not like that at all.
Out on the course there was a place to grab a brat/hot dog, etc. The guy operating it could care less we were there but the brat was very good. No tip 4 U !!
All 4 of us really enjoyed the course and would play it again.
Best in No Michigan
Dramatic, big hills. Couldn’t be more of a challenging, enjoyable golf experience.
Starter is an old loser
Starter will ruin your day right from the start. The guy is a grumpy jerk. Definitely not the guy for the job
Enjoyable Sunday Morning
Fairways and greens were fine but like one of its sister courses, the tee boxes were in need of some TLC.
Great course, especially in the fall.
One of my favorite courses.
My wife I just played it (first of October) and we loved it.
The course is set up so that most of the holes play down hill, which is great for the average guy trying to break 90. Every hole is cut out of the trees but the fairways are wide enough to hit on a regular basis. I will play there again soon.
Hello, u314159913740. Thank you for leaving us a review. We are sorry to hear your experience was anything short of 5 stars, but we hope you will give us another try in the future. Thank you for choosing The Cedar River at Shanty Creek.
