During the winter Shanty Creek offers more than 50 ski runs but in the summer it becomes one of northern Michigan's top golf vacation spots. The club boasts four championship courses, one of which is designed by Arnold Palmer and another by Tom Weiskopf. The Summit Course is the club's original layout. The golf course has a similar terrain to the other three but it is not as dramatically hilly. The layout has a traditional design that incorporates player-friendly elements including putting complexes with open fronts that are more accessible to those who can't hit high, soft approaches. The greens on the seventh and eighth, two of the course's most memorable holes, are an exception though. They require both accuracy and a soft touch. The golf course is approachable for all skill levels, but tight, tree-lined fairways keep it challenging.

Nice course in good condition

Summit is a nice public course that was in pretty good condition. The greens roll true and the and the course is well marked. Some of the tee boxes are very close to adjacent fairways, so there is a high potential if hearing the word FORE!

Summit course is fun

Condition

Back 9 is a bit better condition than the front but overall a good course.

Greens were fast but putted well.

Rough was manageable.

Price was fair for a course this well managed.

I'd recommend it. We had fun

Challenging

Played on 7/14 as a threesome. Have played this course once before and it’s full of ups and downs, rolling hills, roughs were rough so hard to find your ball, tee boxes kind of hacked up, some fairways pretty spotty with dead patches, greens were good, and bunkers mostly sandy. Carts electric with rain bonnets, no coolers or ball washers. Some shade on the course. Portajohns were clean. There were areas if you didn’t know where the next tee box was it would be confusing to find, not marked very well. Pace of play was 4hrs. Staff was nice. This course is not easy for average older adults so pick your tee boxes conservatively to keep from getting too fatigued especially when the weather is hot and humid.

The Summit is a great course for the money. The views are wonderful. The fairways are wide and well taken care of and the pace of play was comfortable. My wife and I played 18 holes in four hours. I’ve played the course (3) times and look forward to many more times.

Wry bad customer service

Course is in very bad shape.

I’ve been playing here for 20 years. It’s the worst I’ve seen it.

Customer service was exceptionally poor. I’ll never play here again.

Tee boxes tore up

Understand now why it was so cheap to play here. Moldy smell in club house including what looks to be black mold on bathroom ceilings! No beverage cart - tee boxes tore up and not maintained. Just overall poor maintenance at this course and surprised since tHawks Eye is so nice.

We will be back!!!!

We really enjoyed our round here. The course was challenging but fair, with a layout that kept us thinking on every hole. Pace of play was excellent — never felt rushed or held up. Facilities were clean and well-maintained, and the staff was friendly. The course itself is absolutely gorgeous, with scenic views throughout. We’ll definitely be back.

Great Scenery

The course has some very nice scenery. The markings (signs) are very clear and easy to navigate.

Only issue I really noticed was some dead spots in the greens and the course is not up to date on golfing apps like The Grint and 18 Birdies.
