About
The Legend Course is one of four championship golf courses at Shanty Creek in Bellaire, one of northern Michigan's most popular golfing destinations. The Legend might be the most well known of the four since it is the club's Arnold Palmer design. It has been ranked as one of the top four resort courses in the country and the best resort course in the Midwest. It is definitely a challenge but Palmer incorporated generous fairways and true-rolling greens that allow golfers to play to their handicap. The golf course features elevated tee areas and slightly raised, heavily bunkered putting complexes. Water hazards also come into play on five holes. The 12th is one of the most challenging holes and also one of the most scenic. There is water to the left and a treacherous bunker waiting on the right.

Super slow play
We quit after 12 holes and 4 hours and 10 minutes in round. As we headed back to club house ranger was sitting on hole 14 talking on phone and had no regards to how things were not moving....we found the issues hole 16 had three foursome on it and hole 17 and 18 wide open....I guess it pays to be in a big group and do want you want. My son and I had a terrible experience!!
The Legend was once legendary
I've never seen this place is such mediocre condition but it's probably been five years since I've played it. Uncut rough, some poor bunker conditions and diseased greens, and don't even bother with the cart paths - they'll be the cause of your lower back pain. Overall it is adequate but not for full retail value. Arnie would want better because the layout itself is fantastic and extremely beautiful, among the very best in the state. It was better only a few years back. Hopefully they return to form and keep up with Cedar River which is miles better condition and value.
Nice layout + challenge
Worth the play for the views, layout and challenge. Wish the course was in better shape the week we played. Lots of dry damage on greens and fairways. Greens tee boxes leave something to be desired due to obvious overplay.
Up North
This is such a great layout to play golf. The problem is the terrible conditions of the cat paths. This has been and I guess will be a problem that will continue!. Course condition was good!
Slowest play ever experienced
There were two senior foursomes ahead of ys that we could see and learned that there was a large group playing. After 11 holes we couldn’t take it anymore and left the course.
Expected Better
For an Arnold Palmer design, I was really expecting more. The tee boxes we used were not in great shape. The staff told us later that because many of the holes were built between ridges that the course stays quite wet, which we noticed right away. The design was OK, but I thought that there were too many sharp dog leg holes especially with the thickness of the surrounding forest.
The course has amazing views!
Elevation changes, green undulations and natural surroundings impress!
Very nice course. Beautiful layout and scenery. You can tell this once was a gem. However course conditions left a lot to be desired. There were a few spots in fairways a greens that had dead spots that would make Arnold Palmer roll over in his grave. Lack of ball washers and trash cans was shocking. But the biggest issue with course conditions was definitely the clientele. Seemed like nobody would fix their divets in the fairway or pitch marks on the greens. Tee boxes were all chewed up. You could tell the course was filled with a bunch of drunk rowdy golfers that had no respect for a beautiful course.
