Athenaeum Hotel

About Athenaeum Hotel
Established in 1881, the Athenaeum Hotel isn't a traditional golf resort. It is part of the non-profit Chautauqua Institution, which offers educational programming on the grounds, while also including recreation such as golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, sailing or canoe/kayak rentals. During the spring and fall months, the hotel acts as a host to conferences, weddings and special events that don't require gate passes into the property. The Lakes and Hills courses at Chautauqua Golf Club, which have ties to Donald Ross and Seymour Dunn, have been played by legends Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. Both are roughly 6,500 yards. Multiple restaurants are available.Facts

Golf etiquette
It's a shame when a foursome won't let a twosome play through. We played the front nine in 1:15, but then caught a foursome who refused to wave us thru and watch one guy take a nine on a par 3! Still a great day, though.
Keep it Straight!
This course is one of my favorites for handicapper between 10-20. If you don't hit the fairway all the time but maybe miss by a little you can still score on this course. If you miss it by a lot, you will get penalized for sure but it is a super fair course. There are lots of trees and lots of Hills (hence the name of the course) but even for someone who doesnt hit it 300yds off the tee the Par 5s can be reached in two if you can hit the fairway and hit a good 2nd shot. Get ready to be creative on several holes on the back 9. Fun course if you can score a deal on the greens fees. During the local vacation season it is extremely steep for local golf but if you can play it for $40 or less jump on it.
Course is in great shape
The greens and fairways were in excellent condition, although the greens were lightning fast!
Good course
Greens are the signature element. Great shape fast and very tricky.
Bring your A game.
This is a excellent course. It has a great layout, the conditioning could not have been better, the greens rolled smooth, true, and were pretty fast. It is a first class layout with some, but not too many bunkers that had nice, fresh, soft sand in them. All in all, it was a great deal to play a quality layout.
Wonderful Course
On vacation in the area and had the opportunity to play the Hills Course twice.
The course is in excellent condition, the holes are both interseting and varied.
Look forward to returning again and playing the Lakes Course.
Have recommended the Course to two friends who plan to play it.
Exceptional
Love playing both Chautauqua Courses. Golfnow has made it very affordable. Both courses are in great shape . Too pricey for my group but I'm cheap.
Always an excellent day
Great deal for an awesome Golf course and club! We Dodged rain drops all morning. Still the course was in excellent shape as always! Excellent staff!
Tough, but enjoyable
Easily the best course around the Chautauqua area. We snagged a golf now hot deal and we're able to get out early morning for 30$ a guy, can't beat that. We played the lake Course and it was fantastic, very challenging and scenic. Conditions were pretty good aside from sand just being a little hard since it hand been raining the day before. Definitely going back!
Hill Course
There are 2 courses and we played the Hill Course. Great day other than the lost golf balls. Course was not crowed and we played our round well under 4 hours. Certain to play this course again. Very friendly staff.
always a good time
-myself and some buddies like to play Chautauqua a few times every year.
-we come from Toronto so it is a long drive but always like to make a day of playing Chautauqua.
-we usually play at least 27 holes but sometimes get in 36.
-Dennis and Troy in the pro-shop are always great with us and probably wonder, holy, here come the Canadians again as it is a good 3 hour drive with the border.
-the course has 2 18's, Lake and Hill, both are in great shape, rates are very reasonable and the pace of play has never been a problem which is another reason we like to go there.
-there is an eatery on site which does the trick and serves alcohol and non-alcohol beverages.
-we always hit Chef's in Buffalo on our way home but always look forward to the trek to Chautauqua and playing golf there, you will too, F.O.R.E
-sorry no pictures but will seek to take some next round.
Good due to Golf Now
The Chautauqa Hill Course is fun, the greens are
very fast and the course is a challenge because
the last nine holes that were built have some
"gimmick holes". In my opinion the course is
usually too expensive compared to the other
courses around. However, Golf Now made it
about 65% for Seniors. We were allowed to
go on the course 30 minutes early because
in October there is not a lot of play and only a
"single" caught up to our 4-some.
Summer 2016
For my last round in the Chautauqua area I chose CGC. Have played the Hill and Lake courses close to a dozen times this summer...a real gem! Very much like the friendly staff and their informal yet professional demeanor.
Great
Course is in great shape. Only thing wrong is they need get rid of them Canadian geese because the holes they are on are full of s#%t. It's hard to walk anywhere on these holes without stepping in it and it's disgusting.
Love the Lake Course
This is my second time playing the Lake course. Really enjoy Don Ross courses having played several. I think the value is the best in Chautauqua!!!
Chautauqua Hills
Course was in great condition, considering the drought this season.
