Athenaeum Hotel

About Athenaeum Hotel
Established in 1881, the Athenaeum Hotel isn't a traditional golf resort. It is part of the non-profit Chautauqua Institution, which offers educational programming on the grounds, while also including recreation such as golf, tennis, fishing, swimming, sailing or canoe/kayak rentals. During the spring and fall months, the hotel acts as a host to conferences, weddings and special events that don't require gate passes into the property. The Lakes and Hills courses at Chautauqua Golf Club, which have ties to Donald Ross and Seymour Dunn, have been played by legends Sam Snead and Ben Hogan. Both are roughly 6,500 yards. Multiple restaurants are available.Facts

the course is in great condition
Greens are very nice and the course is generally in good condition for as dry as the summer has been.
Fast greens fast pkay
Got around in under 4 hours with one person walking in our group. Greens in great shape despite very dry summer.
Special value
Outstanding challenge and enjoyment. Don't plan on shooting your best score of the year. You will be dealing with greens which would challenge every pro from above the cup. Accessible location and an exceptional value
Good value at Golfnow rate
Played this course growing up. Typically in good shape with many good holes and subtle greens.
Hill Course
Great Course, Great Price
I'll definitely go back.
We played the Hill course and a week or two later played the Lake course. They had recently punched the greens and they were a little rough but much better than expected for a punched green. The fellow at the desk allowed us to switch to the other course as it was "punched" the week before and was faster which I thought was nice. I liked the Hill course better of the two. We will be back!
You do get a little history on the Lake course though. :)
Course was in bad shape
Golfed here many times over the years and we were very disappointed with shape of course. Hopefully, it's just early in season. We will try again over next few months.
One of my favorite courses
The Hill course at Chautauqua is very well maintained. The greens hold approach shots and are quick but fair. The layout has several elevation changes as well as dog legs left and right. A nice mix of par threes, fours and fives. I would classify this 18 as a positional golf course. Overall a great place to play.
Great course, great staff, AWESOME Practice Facility.
One of the best courses in the area, in great shape from the start of the season to the very end. Pace of play is typically very quick which is a huge plus. Staff is super friendly, and always very accommodating.
