Grand Course
Played 13 of 18 holes , shortened due to thunderstorm along with some hail. First 13 holes were very enjoyable with lots of topography. Greens were in good condition and putted nice and fast with lots of undulations. Fairways were also in good condition. Pace of play was slightly slow due to large number of foursomes in front of us, but up until the rain conditions were perfect. Would love to play the course again and do recommend it.
Not Worth the Higher Prices
Love the course, play at least a few times a year. However, if you are not willing to spend 4-5 hours on the golf course, this is not a good option.
Poor amenities, short course, good layout
Small course in a small area, but very good layout (Donald Ross design). Three short par 5s and five par 3s for an overall par 70. No driving range - a net and a worn out mat. The practice green was small and did not represent the greens on the course. On many holes, you cannot tell what is in front of you. There is no help: no course layout on the scorecard, or signs anywhere on the course. You have to buy a yardage book for $15 to understand the layout. Not worth paying full price; use Golf Now!
Not what I expected
I love this golf course and was looking forward to playing it again. I knew when I booked that the greens had been aerated but what I didn't know until after I got there was that only nine holes were being played.
In addition we had to stay on the cart paths.
Under normal conditions I would rate this course 5 stars but today was a strike out as far as I'm concerned.
1. aerated greens
2. cart path only (it would have been better to walk)
3. only the front nine in play
Great Course
Although it rained early that morning, the course was still in fantastic shape! Our tee time was delayed by about 15 minutes because of the rain which made the round a little long but other than that the round was great. I look forward to playing there again.
Great course, terrible amenities
This golf course is phenomenal, direction is an awesome way out. They're a great mountain views everywhere. The downside to this course is there is no on-site restaurant, bar, or beverage cart. I made the turn at 12:30, and there was no options for lunch. That's pretty bad for a resort! There's also no bar on site, so drinks were hard to buy. They were redoing 18 so it was a little slow around Hole 11 that you had to play twice. Other than that they do a great job as far as the golfing experience. The amenities and extras that I would say they are lacking
Simply the best deal and course in Asheville
I live nearby, GPI's course is wonderful. Groomed immaculately, fast and true greens (Ross designed), par 70 (only 2 par 5s, both short), great staff, walkable (I walked even tho the fee includes cart). Gorgeous feeling of being in a quiet lively park in the middle of the city.!
Bucket list
We played on a chilly morning. There was not much traffic at all. The course overall was in good shape. Greens are fantastic and fast. A couple of the holes confused me. The first par-5 was only 385 yards. But it cost me a shot since there was not a layout describing the hole and I took a shot thinking I was cutting a corner only to be 90 degrees away from the Target and into a water pond. Only second time I had played with a year in between. Par-fives are very reachable in two. It's great to be able to say you played there for The Prestige.
GPI a beautiful tortuous test
The GPI golf course is wedged between the famous lodge buildings and an old upper class neighborhood of generally big well-cared for private residences in a near-North neighborhood of Asheville. Owing to the age of the course and precious little acreage it inhabits, there is no practice range and the practice green covers no more space than a two car garage. The staff are polite and attentive, but a hike is in order up two flights of stairs when checking in and to use restrooms.
The layout is well manicured and maintained, but make no mistake in that it plays as a "mountain course" in that practically the only "flat lies" are on the tees and it is wise to assume most greens have severe "tilt" to them. The course is not long (2 of the 3 par fives "reachable" for long hitters), but dog legs and tall mature trees line most holes to "pressure" tee shots in terms of distance and placement. To play this quirky course well, precise shotmaking and good putting is required.
The dual bent and Bermuda grasses on the course allow it to be played year-round and most of the scenery from the tees is somewhat awe inspiring. It would seem a stretch for most to "fall in love" with the course (long hitters not needing to play long or mid irons and older players not relishing all the steep walking around greens), but there is no shame in puting a GPI round in one's golf journal.
Definitely coming back
Really enjoyed the layout of the course. Challenging in places but still room to stretch your game. Great shape overall and excellent price point for the mid week discount. Will come back again.
Awesome course to play!
Golf at Grove Park
Hour delay due to unexpected frost. Friendly staff. Course in fairly good shape but the dryness in the local area showing up as dry areas in the rough and over watering in other areas. Miss the GPS carts from the past. Only play there when the GolfNow rates are affordable. Omni has overpriced this course.
Grove Park Inn
Course is in very good condition nice lay out super fast greens be careful not to be above the whole friendly Staff great buy through Golfnow !
once was enough
Great course. I enjoyed the layout. It allows for a lot of different club selections and u can play most holes in many ways so u can get creative. The staff were great. The only cons on the course 1) the course was seem d to be over watered. Many of the fairways had standing water from sprinklers because it hadn't rained in weeks. Some of the valleys it was hard to get a stance because of the mushy conditions. 2) price is not reflected by the course. U are paying for the surroundings and history which is worth a one time spend in my opinion. 3). No driving range just a net.
One thing I will say is that the greens are typical of Donald Ross and extemely fast and hard to read those subtle breaks.
Over all I thoroughly enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone to play atleast once more if u have the money.
Fun classic course
Played the Grove Park Inn course on a stopover in Asheville. I was a single paired up with another single. The course was in good shape. Greens had been punched recently, but rolled nicely. Fairways were in good shape, although fairly soggy. Tee boxes were kind of beat up, however. Overall the course was in very good condition, although they appear to overwater since this area is in a major drought and it was still very soft. Course design is very interesting. It's a short course with most of the challenge being the greens, typical of a Ross course. Lots of sloping fairways. Pace of pay was a little slow initially as we were behind a five some and a slow foursome. At turn, a marshall invited us to skip ahead to get past the bottle neck and then we were able to pick up the missed holes with no problem. Overall, a fun course to play and I'd come back again.
Omni Grove Park Inn, history collides with autumn.
arrived right on time with a 3:30 pm tee time, the drive to the hotel on the mountain was worth the trip in within itself. The historical Donald Ross design spells fairways of a time long gone, yet meshing so beautifully with the fall foliage and scenic mountains standing guard over the horizon. The course plays pretty short despite the overwhelming softness. Don't plan on any bump and runs, you'll ned to carry the ball to get it there. The par 5's are all birdie holes, with the last of the trio representing a good chance for eagle as a good drive could leave less than 200 yards into the green nestled down by the road. Playing in late afternoon allowed me to finish off my round before dusk, and just as the skies started illuminating red, I grabbed a fresh brew to watch the sun vanish behind the mountains. Spectacular cap to a spectacular afternoon, all the way down to all of the great customer service received at ever turn. Played in right around four hours, but I could've played a lot faster. The course's beauty and the views of the surrounding mountains are enough to cause even the most focused golfer to step back and enjoy the view.
Nice Course
Very nice course. The greens were very fast and I like that. The staff that I came in contact with were also nice. The only drawback is the price. I used GolfNow and that was the only way I was going to play it.at $65
Disappointing Experience
Was surprised at the relatively average condition of the course the property its located on is a highly rated resort/hotel. Most disappointing was being unable to play the back nine as the staff directed us to reply the front nine since some hotel guests had taken a 2 hour lunch at the end of their first nine holes and then returned to complete play later preventing us from moving forward to the back nine. Perhaps if the amenities at the course had been open, those golfers might not have had to retreat to the hotel for lunch in the first place. The staff was very friendly and accommodating as much as they could be given the circumstances. I would not return to play here again.
