Lady Friendly Recreation
Very generous forward tees update this Donald Ross classic to super lady-friendliness. Several couples populated the course on our Sunday round. Even from the back tees the course is short, but the mountain terrain creates surprising bounces and zero flat lies. Quirky, undulating greens defend par. Front flags are close to false fronts that send seemingly adequate shots rolling twenty yards back down the fairway. Shots above the pin set up merciless three-putts. The greens were ball-marked, but quick. Tee boxes and fairways were in good shape. The clubhouse was 1950's in need of an update. Somewhat overpriced, but it's resort golf---handy to downtown and receptive to tourists.
Boss of the Ross Moss
What a perfect day. The staff greeting us could not have been more welcoming - truly the Southern hospitality we have come to love. Thanks Marcus !
Albeit short, even from the tips, the course plays much longer. All approaches are uphill. Play to center of greens or you may be victimized by D. Ross falloffs on side/fronts of greens.
Bent grass fairways and greens: a really nice surprise for us northerners that 'don't get' Bermuda grass.
Greens and fairways were perfect. Many downhill tee shots - some severely affected by crosswinds.
OK, now the views. The views of the mountains, hillsides and the Omni hotel loom large.
Well-stocked clubhouse if you are into merchandising. Nice variety. My Garmin GPS was acting up, I assume because of the valleys and hillsides. However, the course yardages are very well marked. A rangefinder nit really needed.
Since it is a resort course, and we did not start at the crack of dawn, pace was pedestrian, as expected. But absolutely did not take away from a wonderful day !
Many opportunities in collection areas near greens to be creating. I often chose the chuck or the skull. These were not good shots but it is a habit.
Greens were very accepting but oddly VERY FAST AND TRUE.
Nice course
With mid-tight fairways and lots of elevation changes the course is challenging. Getting on in GIR isn't to bad as its a short course, but then your challenged with undulating greens which were nice and fast.
Settings
Very nice. Would love to come back Turned out to be a great day to play golf and the course made it perfect fit
Great Donald Ross Layout!
With a Golf Now Hot Deal of only $25.00 this was a steal! I've always loved this course, but normal rates are too over priced. Thank you Golf Now!
After a little bit of a frost delay, I was paired up with one of the first groups of the day. The fairways were in great shape, a few wet spots from recent rains and snow. I always had an excellent lie in the fairway, no visible bare spots.
The greens weren't as fast as I remember, probably because of previous weather and they looked like they hadn't been cut in a few days.
From the member tees, a couple of reachable par 5s with good Tee balls. Most holes only require 3W or hybrids off the tee. Good elevation changes.
With weather in the mid 60's after so many miserably cold days, I couldn't have asked for a better day. The starter, Fred, was a very friendly sort of fellow with a good sense of humor.
Course over rated
Weatner was cold n rainy but for $20 ongolfnow it was hard to pass up. Course was in good condition considering the time of year. If anyone pays regular price that they ask has money to burn cause its worth $25 at the most. Im thankful for golfnow or id never get to play the course cause its over rated to the max
The course has great views.
The weather report was wrong and it stayed much colder than expected. Course was in good shape. Greens were real slow but putted true. Price was excellent.
Tougher than the slope rating
We played in wind of 15-25 mph which added about 400+ yards to the course. Front nine plays a lot tougher than the back nine. Tees, fairways & greens were all in good shape, especially for January. Reg.green fees are very pricey, but low rates are sometimes out there. Greens have plenty of undulation, and are good sized--you can have 100 ft.putts on many holes. Most break away from the clubhouse, & plan on double the break you think you see. A real test for shot making, but fairly generous targets. Lots of elevation tests & beautiful views.
Nice Course
Nice Course but not in the best of shape for a resort type course. Tee boxes were a little beat up, greens were good but looked like maintenance has been a challenge
very nice all around
The course is always in good shape. The greens are smooth and quick downhill. Views from the course are spectacular. The hotel is awesome.
Nice course
Russ was a great bag man. We appreciate his help and willing to make sure we know the course layout. Russ was very friendly to us . We need people like Russ at every course. Thanks for providing excellent customer service. We really enjoyed our time there and we would recommend this to our friends.
Nice course, beautiful resort
Really enjoyed the course. We scored a hot time for $30, plus had a BOGO. Honestly, I'm not sure I would drive the 45 minutes to play this course otherwise. Don't get me wrong, the staff was great, super friendly and helpful with some local knowledge. The course was well kept (Tee Boxes 9/10; Fairways 9/10; Greens 9/10). It plays relatively short from the Blue Tees, hit one fairway wood the entire day. It is just over priced for regular tee times. There are multiple courses in the area that are worth playing and you will pay a lot less for just as good, if not better course/scenery etc. My son and I played it in under 4 hours, would've played probably in 3-3.5 if not for foursome that wouldn't move on the front. Water on one or two holes, bunkers on each hole, undulating greens that were much larger then I expected. You can play Asheville Municipal for about $75 less and it's designed by Donald Ross as well.
I feel slightly bad for this review, but regular price on GN is anywhere from $100-$125 and imo this course isn't worth paying that much to play.
put the shuttle bus driver back in his cage
the bag man and pro shop were great -some idiot bus driver was screaming orders to guest-me...killed the whole experience...this behavior is not unusual at grove park over the last 3-4 yrs-treating locals with no respect and making them feel very unwelcome-we have stopped taking out of town guest there for drinks and meals...we drop them on curb and let them see lobby and go somewhere locals are appreciated...great course wonderful bag man and club house staff
Beautiful course at a great rate
Moved to this area in 1995 when the Grove Park Inn was a family owned business. I've always enjoyed the course, especially before it became corporate owned and the prices skyrocketed. Donald Ross has designed many courses in the South and this one is true to his form...postage stamp greens with tricky undulations. The course was in decent shape, the staff very courteous and professional. Over cast and a bit chilly day, but couldn't beat or pass up the Golfnow.com price for a course that has been financially prohibitive for a long time. Hopefully new management will bring fees in line with what the course is truly worth. Ross designed the Asheville municipal course as well and there's little difference in conditions.
Needs updating
Nice layout with beautiful scenery. Proshop and locker rooms are still back in the 80's. Greens were very spongy with tons of footprints. Would only play on a hot deal. The resort is not keeping the course up to a high standard.
Great day at the course
Get to play here a few times a year, love it every time. Can't beat $39 hot deal with a $40 promo code.
Course is great - Value for the money average
This is the best public course in the area as far as conditions, but not affordable for the average player. I got a great discount thur Golf Now, but I would not pay the rack rate. This is a basic $100 upscale resort course just about anywhere else, but they can command the higher price due to the resort and history. Great facility and the course is awesome. Great course to play once, buit probally not a course your going to play as a local.
Four course condition
The people at the golf course were great. They were bending over backwards to make you have a good time. The course condition was deplorable. The greens had some bare spots the tees were all beat up and the sides of the courses look like they were totally not kept up. I have played many municipal courses in far better shape. Save your money not worth anywhere near what they charge.
The course have panoramic holes.
I have played quite a few coures around the country and for the money they are asking, the course could have been in a little better shape.Given the fact that I didn't play well and the greens were recently aereated, the course have some beautiful holes mainly the 18th.
Great resort
I did not stay in the hotel this, but this a great resort. Staff was very friendly and the course was a pleasure to play.
