Oldie but a goodie
The Grove Park Inn is iconic in the mountains of Western North Carolina. That said, the resort itself has seen better times. New owner Omni hotels is making improvements to the old locker rooms and around the clubhouse. The course is in good shape, although it's not necessarily the highest quality you will find at other high-end resorts around the country. That said, the Donald Ross design is challenging and fun to play. As much as I hate to say it, the sand traps are a pleasure -- some of the best in the mountains. I played on a March day when high winds and cold were forecast for later, and I think that scared off a lot of people. But the conditions were perfect for golf (60s and no wind) and I practically had the course to myself. Played 18 in 2.5 hours and loved it.
Short par fives, long par threes
I used a golfnow rewards voucher to treat my brother- in- law, and two nephews. We had a great time and an overall positive experience. I would not pay full price for the course however I am glad that by using golfnow we had the opportunity to play the course. The staff was friendly and did not treat us differently which is not always the case.
Fun day!
The wonderful setting of this golf course made up for the chilly and damp weather.
A Ross Classic
Although lacking in length, this courses defense is it's somewhat narrow fairways and undulating, fast greens .Some of the quickest I've ever played. The course was in great shape for November compliments to the bent grass throughout. And Oh My, the views, but I am a little biased, I love Donald Ross designed courses, one of his best here!!!
Just an overall great place to stay and play. The picturesque views to the fast greens.
Most holes end directly at each tee box which is nice for walkers but may add some caution to concentration when putting or teeing off. The course is laid beautifully to capture the surrounding mountains and treelines along fairways in the fall are beautiful. As any course, if you play smart your score will reflect it but this is a course to not take for easy play due to the elevations and fast greens. The staff were very nice and helpful in all ways. Nice Pro shop, putting/chipping greens but no driving range. The history of the Legends that played there makes it more of a "bucket list" course to play at.
I HAVENT PLAYED THIS COURSE IN YRS TILL TODAY
THE COURSE IS OVERRATED PRICE WISE. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER WNC COURSES THAT THIS COURSE WOULDNT COMPARE TO AS FAR AS PLAYING CONDITIONS GO. YOU MUST PLACE YOUR SHOT AT THE GREENS WHICH MAKES U A BETTER IRON PLAYER IF U PLAY IT OFTEN. THE FAIRWAYS WERE GREAT THE GREENS WERE TOO BUMPY. IM GLAD ITS ON GOLFNOW AT REDUCED RATES CAUSE ITS DEFINITELY NOT WORTH THE PRICE THEY ASK. I WOULDNT RECOMMEND IT TO MY FRIENDS.
Great last minute golf in Asheville
Played Grove Park on Friday after looking around for a course to play near Asheville that was not private. Grove Park has a great history and the golf course that was originally designed by Donald Ross is not long but a good test for the average golfer, especially the greens. The GolfNow discount green fees are a great deal for this course! I would highly recommend both.
Typical Donal Ross Design
Well maintained and manicured course. Greens are tricky as most Donald Ross courses are. Play #17 from the back tees!!!
Don't let the yardage deceive you it plays longer than scorecard. The greens are special with sutle breaks unseen and fast.
This was an excellent choice great Donald Ross layout with all 18 holes having picturesque views. Can not wait to go back!
Great course
Beautiful setting and a fun course to play. Par 3's are a challenge.
Overpriced
Booked the time online and was aware of aeration on greens but was not aware that back 9 was closed to play. A 1 hour drive one way to course so went ahead and played front 9 twice.
Regular green and tee box was closed on number 2 due to recent flooding and even after over a week of dry weather some spots on the front were still very soggy. Don't pay pro shop green fees of $129 or $149 in season. Way overpriced. Wait for hot deals on golfnow and recommend to call golf course prior to reservation to get complete rundown on course conditions. Made a special trip on my birthday to play at this "upscale" course and was disappointed.
Nice course
Greens were being aerated and the back nine was closed. We had to play the front nine twice. You would think that they would have offered a higher discount for that.
Superb!
Best course I've played in the Asheville area so far. It's more expensive than most of the others, but for good reason -- it's kept in top notch shape, even after the torrential rains of July. A bridge was washed out on #2, but the "temporary green" was every bit as nice as the original -- amazing! I'll definitely be back again.
Great Donald Ross Course
The course was in excellent condition with narrow fairways and difficult rough. All putts broke away from the resort after hole number five. The second hole was under construction due to so e flooding that a washed out a bridge.
I would recommend this course played by Presidents and ledges of golf.
Grove Park Inn was excellent also as wife had a great time at the spa as I played golf.
Classic Donald Ross design, an absolute treat!
The Grove Park Inn is a terrific resort with a world class spa. The golf course is on the short side (par 70 about 6,000 yards), but plays longer than that for some reason. Greens rolled great and were very fast. Best of all were the mountain views. Through golfnow I got greens fees for $55 - way less than the normal $129. Definitely recommended!
Check your ego when you walk on the greens
Awesome views. Wonderful conditions. Expensive but impressive if you are entertaining. Only criticism-no driving range.
A short course that is fiercely protected by CHALLENGING Donald Ross Greens
My Overall FAVORITE course
I LOVE this course. The views from the back 9 bring tears to my eyes, they are so gorgeous. And I live in Asheville!! It has plenty of variety and is always in great shape. It's a short course, so definitely one I can hope for a great score, with my 5 years into the game.
wonderful old course with large greens
Enjoyed playing this course, they had some bridges washed out from recent heavy rains, but were repairing them. Old-style course with large, tricky to read greens with many false fronts. Helpful staff too.
Majestick Grove Park Inn and it's front lawn :)
The course suffered some wash out the night before I played due to heavy rains, so there was a temporary tee box set up for #2 when I played. An entire section of cart path had sunk into a sink hole, so there was also a temporary cart path. No bother though - once we got around that section of the course we were on our way. Play was fast - hardly anyone was out - and the course is absolutely beautiful. Mostly straight - but tight fairways on most holes.
I think the course is a bit over priced - I would never pay full rate - but it's at the Grove Park Inn - so everything is pricey.
Lunch and Golf at Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC
If you have the money don't miss Grove Park Inn for lunch and a round of golf. While it is a great experience, my husband and I both think it is overpriced and doesn't really live up to what one might expect for the price. This is because it is a resort course. Do go to GolfNow.com for better rates.
