Looking out on #2 Fairway Photo submitted by walt02554 on 08/25/2013
Extremely Disappointed
Was in Austin for a long weekend, and had one day to play golf. After much research, I chose Wolfdancer. It's on most top 20 lists of courses you can play in TX, and recent reviews said the course was in great shape. It was the wrong decision. I am not sure what course the other reviewers could have played, because the course was not even close to prime time. The greens had been recently aerated and were very "sticky" due to being top dressed with sand. They probably hadn't been cut either. OK, so I understand you have to maintain the greens, but what I don't understand is why this information is not made public and why courses continue to charge top dollar to play. Even more inexcusable were the many areas around the greens, around the sand traps, and areas in the rough that obviously had not been mowed for a while. On one hole, my ball was 2 steps off the fairway, and it took 5 minutes to find it. Speaking of sand traps, there was little sand, and the sand that was there was so hard that you could break the rake on it. I thought Wolfdancer was a high end course, but the course conditions were barely above your local muni. As if the prices weren't high enough already, they also charged $5 for a small bag of range balls. Very tacky. It's too bad, because this could be a top shelf course if the maintenance was up to snuff. Don't be fooled by the ratings and the Hyatt Resort setting. This is clearly not a high end course nor worth the prices they charge.
beautiful course
My family took me there for fathers day. Enjoyed the course, it was very beautiful. The greens were challenging but exciting. The scenery was breathtaking. We partnered up and had a small tournament within ourselves. My wife wasnt able to play becouse she was taking care of her elderly parents, but she was able to keep them occupied in the resort lobby and restaurant. I promised my wife that I would bring her back soon so that she and I could play and maybe stay at the resort for the weekend.
A Must play for Austin Area
This was the second time to play this course. We played it the first time in Oct of 2013, and the course was in good condition. This time we caught the course at perfect time. The condition of course was excellent, greens where near perfect fast, smooth and roll true. If you never have played this course it is well worth the trip.
Fair Condition
This is the second time to play the course. The course is challenging and in overall decent shape. You would think that a resort course that charges what they do would at least rake the bunkers. I was in a few...and the ones I seem to land in were not raked. If I'm going to pay a premium I want the course to be in top shape especially for a busy weekend.
Great course
The course staff and facilities were exceptional. Pace of play was a little slow. GPS on cart was very helpful.
Nice course
Not in as good a condition as I expected it to be. It was very dry and the greens were hard as a rock and covered in sand.
Great but slow
Nice, friendly staff everywhere on this resort. The course was in outstanding shape except for the bunkers. Little to no sand in them. Greens were perfect and very undulating. The rough was a bit excessive at time and would swallow a golf ball completely just off a fairway. The beautiful views make you forget bad shots easily.
Tough little course
Great resort that this course is located in. The staff is extremely nice and helpful. The driving range is great and has music playing in the background. The course is challenging with some blind shots, and rolling hills to provide uneven lies. The fairways and greens were in pretty good shape. The bunkers were not, so we dropped out of them.
Poor conditions, slow pace
This course was a big disappointment. The bunkers were unplayable- no sand, not raked, standing water in many. The course had received some rain 2 days prior but was not water-logged and there was not excuse for the condition of the bunkers. The fairways also had not been mowed. The greens were okay but not very receptive. Round took 5hrs! Not what you would expect for $100.
Sand Traps
This Arthur Hills designed course has an abundance of sand traps. The recent rain storm rendered a number of these traps unplayable due to poor drainage.
Great course, lousy trap condition, kinda pricey.
Excellent, scenic and very challenging layout. Lousy check in service with no cart available and the cart shack not responding to the pro shop...huh? Course is in great shape but for the bunkers which are hardened clumpy mud...lots of rain and NO follow up maintenance...huh? Greens in good condition. Bar area in pro shop closed between lunch and dinner so don't plan on relaxing there after a round between 4-6pm...really?
Summary: great course with questionable management and no food or beer between 4-6pm.
Heads up Dudes...you're not living up to the price tag.
Great layout.
I really like this course- very challenging with great views. Pace of play can be an issue because of the resort affiliation with Hyatt. Pack your patience!
Great Course
My son and I played the course on Father's Day, it was busy but not a lot of waiting. The fairways and greens were in great shape. Only one green had a bad spot. Only negative thing to mention is there is no out of bounds, because if your ball lands off the fairway the rough is so tall you cannot find your ball. I gave pace of play 4 1/4 hours but it didn't seem to take that long. Also busy due to Father's Day.
Two significant things hurt rating for a great course
1. Pace of play was 5 hours and never saw a Marshall;
2. Understand bunkers having rain from night before but many bunkers with no water had received NO maintenance. One I was in was rock hard; some had tire tracks; many had no evedence of attention at all.
3. The tee boxes and fairways were in excellent condition; the greens were very good.
4. The putting green near the driving range is a disgrace--poor condition and no flat area.
Great staff and course!
I booked my tee time on golfnow. I ended up being late getting to the course so I called, they said it was no problem and they could get me out shortly after. He also threw in some range balls because I was having such a bad day. The golf was amazing. Beautiful rolling hills and such well manicured fairways and greens. Had such a good time I'll definitely be back within a month!
Overall nice course
I very much enjoyed the first nine holes as thee velvet ion changes and scenery were great. The back nine hole however fell into the river flats but never incorporated the river and was therefore a bit boring. Sand traps were very hard but the greens were exceptional.
Very nice and tough course
I have played Wolfdancer 3 times in the last month through GolfNow at a reasonable price. I am very pleased with this course. It's very challenging and demands that you keep the ball in the fairway or else you will lose many balls.
One of the best coursesin Texas
Wolfdancer absolutely has to be one of the best courses to play in Texas. The staff treats you like royalty, the resort let's the family enjoy activities while you relax and enjoy the scenery.
I would recommend it to any person wanting to have a family outting where golf is a part of your activities.
Great and fair layout
70 mile drive but would go back for the right price
Best resort course I have ever played
Great course
We really enjoyed this course. Weather was 40% chance of rain but the person behind the counter showed us the Doppler and the coast was clear. Had the course to ourselves until the Men's Club caught up to us on the last couple of holes. Beautiful layout, challenging for all with the different tee boxes. Course is fair and GPS took care of yardage issues. Greens sanded about a week ago but still true. Despite the Texas drought we have heard about the course was green with good lies on every shot. Staff very friendly and courteous from check in to end of round.
I played the course the same week...yes, the greeens were previously aerated. Otherwise, the course was in great shape. I will eagerly return to play this course again.
