Good news, Bad news
Have to give them props for the rebuild. This course now has some of the best greens in the area, and the removal of trees and several bunkers has made it an even better layout. But sadly, the attitude of the staff is horrible, absolutely ruining the experience.
Played it twice in two weeks. First time after rain, so was cart path only, and a 15 minute delay in starting. Much to our surprise at the turn, we were greeted with the ominous warning that "they were very cognizant of the time, and take slow play very seriously" and that we were ten minutes behind our scheduled pace. Made for some interesting conversation the rest of our round as we pondered the word "cognizant".
The second round was on one of the hottest days of the year. Without warning, after the first nine, and no drink cart, It turns out they had just several days before removed all the water jugs on the course, as we were told be the same "cognizant" starter they were "very unsanitary". He explained with a straight face, that their strategy was to place ice bins right outside the two bathrooms, (as if anyone actually washes their hands before dipping into them).
So, if you play to their cognizant pace, don't mind the snottiness staff in town, bring your own cooler, and can afford to significantly overpay for the privilege. ...this is the PERFECT place for you. Is very sad actually. Is a great layout, with wonderful potential, and championship level practice facility. I hope they can get their act together ... Maybe next year I can convince my group to try it again.
Beautiful facilities for public course
Impressive. From the initial drive in to view of clubhouse and then the practice facilities to courses. Great par three with a couple 175 yard holes 150 then 125 to 100 . Great warm up from 5 iron to wedges. Every hole has a flagged regulation hole and a flagged 8 inch hole for the junior or beginner. Forced carriers and elevation changes make for great par three. Numerous tee boxes to accommodate any skill level. Costly but would say worth the money just to take the challenge and get a taste of some very nice facilities. Very nice area area and will be paying the full 18 soon.
VERY Solid
This is a very good course. Not ridiculously tough, but an excellent test. Fun to play, but not too easy. Greens not too fast, but very true, so you can sink some long putts!
New fairways, so it's cart path only....I took a cart, but should have walked.....
Great course...for long hitters
I enjoyed this course just wish I was a longer hitter.
Great Day of Golf!
Everyone was super friendly. The Bermuda was starting to go dormant, so the fairways were an off-green, but the greens were immaculate and putted true (but fast!)
Service was excellent along with the meal at the turn. Would certainly play again!
A challenging but fair golf course
Played this course for the first time and hope that I can come back to play it again. Greens were in good shape and some of the fairways looked like they had previous issues which were addressed.
Excellent course, great value with golfnow
I've played Independence before and it has always been a nice course. When we played the other day it was in excellent shape. It is a very scenic and relatively open course. Well worth playing.
Always a Challenge and a Great Course to Play!
See above, but my score should have been better. Spent too much time in the bunkers, but they too were in great shape and gave me some added practice.
Great layout, practice facilities but conditions struggled in 2013.
IGC has struggled with the fairways all year this year, due to cold and wet winter, type of Bermuda, and late fertilizer application. They will get it fixed as they always do. Their 'brand' continues to be the fantastic greens. The practice facilities and teaching staff will rival any private club in the state.
very nice course.
A challenging course. Lots of bunkers and elevation change. Undulating multi tiered greens. The greens had been recently airated but will be fully healed within a week or two. Well maintained , a grounds crew was raking all traps while we were there. In my personal top 5 in the Richmond area.
Beautiful
Fairways and greens are in top condition. Nice course for hitting driver. Great golf course.
Excellent Value!
Independence is one of the best public courses in the area. It's also home to the Virginia State Golf Association. The course is in great shape and the greens are like lighting. Just a great afternoon of golf.
Great
Great everything, never a bad day at Independence.
great deal on a great course
Got a great deal for me and a buddy. Played on a holiday at 12:50 at a really nice course for $33 each. Course is always in great shape, no complaints.
awesome greens.
Independence Golf Club is a great place to play golf.
Excellent challenge
The course is one of the best in the area and for the money it is the best. It was in great shape and the greens were perfect. Will definitely play it again as soon as possible.
One of the best.
My friends and I loved it. The course was beautiful and the staff was awesome.
Staffs are all super friendly
I always love this golf course as usual.
One thing i want to mention is how crews in this club are amazing.
A couple days ago I booked a tee time via golfnow.com and played with my friend. Next day morning I realized that I left my watch in the golf cart after round. I called a front desk to know if they hold the watch, and I was able to get it back. I was really appreciated the crews. My watch is not that expensive but it is very valuable to me. Thank you again!
This course is very well maintained
Thankfully, you do not need a 4X4 vehicle to get from greens to tees. This is one of the courses that actually has cart paths in the Richmond area.
This is a great course for those of us long off the tee box. Many of the holes require carrying hazards off the tee box, even if you tee it forward.
Large greens help to get the GIR, and are challenging but not impossible to get a few birdies here and there.
Very Good Course with Excellent Amenities
Independence is a great course and it was in very good shape. The greens are in excellent shape. Some of the fairways are having some issues and there are large spots in some fairways (mostly front nine) that are being re-sodded. It was obvious that the issues are very actively being addressed, which is great. Again, overall, the course was in very good shape and it is a challenging but fair layout. BTW - The practice facilities are the best in the area. It was a great day of golf...
