Independence Golf Club - Championship
About
Independence Golf Club in Midlothian is situated on the edge of the Piedmont region, routed through the area’s mature woodlands and natural wetlands. Tom Fazio designed the course; it's his only daily-fee course design in Virginia. The challenging layout features narrow fairways lined with high, thick rough areas. There are also numerous strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greens. It's a tough golf course but not overly punishing for high handicappers. The course strikes a nice balance between being challenging and playable, a reason that it often serves as host to many Richmond-area tournaments. The layout finishes with an uphill dogleg left that plays over water, with a good drive you can avoid the bunkers that are to both the left and right of the fairway. For beginners, Independence Golf Club also has a nine-hole short course for training as well as a learning center.

Independence 8/2025
Pace of play was an issue last weekend. Ranger went out to help, but it didn’t really pick up much. Appeared to be caused by just one or two groups. Otherwise kudos for keeping the course in pretty good shape in the scorching heat. The rough here is a beast. Can lose a ball that is a yard off the fairway if it sinks down. Staff is always great.
Round terminated due to weather
I have already stated once that terminating a round of golf on the 11th hole ruins the enjoyment of a full round of golf. Moreover, Golf Now then pro-rated the cost of 7 holes. To me, that’s ridiculous. Golf Now should have at least ori-rated 9 holes considering the golf outing was ruined for me and my three sons due to inclement weather (lightening and light rain)
Weather Ruined Golf
Finished 11 holes with my three sons and the course shut down due to weather. We were having a great golf outing and the termination ruined our golf day. Golf Now pro-rated credit for the 7 holes not played. In my view, pro-rating 7 holes is a poor way to compensate golfers who were interrupted / terminated in the middle of their golf game. That’s why a normal round of golf is set at 18 holes.
Excellent Golf Course and Staff
We played this course last fall and were excited to play it again. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Course was in superb condition and the greens were fast and true. After our round we enjoyed a meal and beverage at Independence Club’s Tavern 19. Very nice menu with a variety of options to choose. Hostess and bartender were very friendly and helpful.
If you are in the Richmond Midlothian area and looking to have a fun day of golf with friends, I highly recommend Independence Golf Club!
Independence
Generally first class operation all around. Great staff, clubhouse, range, layout, fairways. Greens were firm and true; not exceptionally fast. I went on a cart path only day and I would not do that again. Definitely would be better to walk than CPO. There was a beverage cart but the snack shack was closed on a Sunday. A great test of the long game. Thanks to Lester George for the sand trap reduction. Rest assured I was still able to find several of them.
An excellent track
Bring your A game. It’s wide open and the green roll very smooth!
Nice coursev
The course was very nice and I had a good time playing it. Being a semi-private club it had some nice amenities and the club fitting trailer was very nice.
I would recommend it when in Richmond.
Terrific Course
Great layout with generous fairways but punishing rough. Greens were in amazing condition! very fast but ran true. Loved it.
Disappointing for a Saturday.
Course was in great shape from the Mid-Am. Practice facility always in great shape. No bev kart or halfway house open on a beautiful Saturday. If you’re gonna claim to be the tip of the spear and charge $150+ for a round then the spear needs to always be sharp.
Fast Greens
Greens were fast and the rough was coming up. Course is hosting the state open in a week.
One of my favorite tracks in the area.
