Hi Gerry, if you can touch the line but you aren’t hitting it solid then your club face doesn’t match your wrist conditions/grip. Use the search feature for “wrists.”
G'day Martin, I have struggled with this all my golf life. I heard there are two types of ways to hit the ball, Greg Norman says he was a picker having a shallow divot or, a digger with a deep divot. I have been a picker with no real divot, now I want a visible divot.
Greg was awesome. Good strikers don’t dig excessively, but their club travel disrupts the ground after touching the ball.
Like this drill. Like the way you describe hitting below the equator. I’ve actually been trying to hit just above the equator with mixed results.
I try this very drill and place a blue chalk powder line right behind the ball and try to not to hit the line. Leave the line and hit the ball.

How do you make good contact with an iron if you are hitting off really hard ground?
Hard, tighter lies are tricky for many and can be painful on the joints. The shot still requires a descending club path to have ball-first contact. You may catch the ball a little low on the face, but it should still fly okay.

Great tip Martin. I am struggling with poor or inconsistent iron contact. More often than not, I "top" the ball, and do not leave a divot. HELP.
Gary, topped shots are a club path issue in most cases. Usually the club travels too steeply from outside to in. Please use the search option for club path or wrist conditions. Thx
