Kings Mill - King Course of the Marion area
A true king serves his people—and this course certainly serves its patrons.
The Staff
This family-run golf course has some of the kindest people you’ll meet. Every staff member was friendly, welcoming, and made a point to acknowledge your presence. While golf may be a challenging sport, great customer service is what keeps players coming back—and it’s the reason I’m happy to make nearly an hour-long drive to play here a couple of times each year.
The Experience
Despite the rain, the course maintained liberal cart rules for the day, which was a real treat. (Momma Bouche may have said “Cart Path Only is the devil!”… though I might also be misquoting Happy Gilmore.)
The golfers here also seem to understand proper etiquette—which is always appreciated. As the saying goes: if you’re going to play bad, play bad fast.
The course itself is sneakily challenging. It may not overwhelm you at first glance, but it definitely demands thoughtful shot-making and keeps things interesting throughout the round.
A Small Critique
My only gripe is that the course is still working through some renovations. About a quarter of the tee boxes were under repair (and honestly, they looked to be in great shape already). I generally wish courses would offer a slight discount when amenities or course conditions are temporarily limited.
That said, one staff member seemed genuinely excited to show off their new free hitting bays, which are fantastic. Any course without a traditional driving range should seriously consider adding something like this—and offering it for free. (Cough cough… Rolling Meadows.)
Final Thoughts
King’s Mill offers a great overall golf experience: a well-kept and challenging course, fair pricing, and genuinely welcoming service. It’s easy to see why players return here, and I’m already looking forward to my next round—especially once gas prices cooperate.
Worth the drive
I’d recommend this course 100%. The course had some personality to it and no two holes were the same. Plus, their replay rate after 18 was $10 for another 9.
The green specifically were in great condition which surprised for being late in the season.

Nice day. Good course conditions. Few slow people.
Perfect Sunday Morning
We were first out. Waited on the gentlemen cutting the first green but then rolled through 2.5 hr round. Course was in good shape. Hole #11 needs some trees cut to get the tee box some more grass. Othen then that it played well. Enjoy
Beautiful course
The course was in great condition and friendly staff.
It was great!
It has always been a pleasure to golf at Kings Mill - staff friendly and helpful and the pace of play has always been steady - a great place to spend a morning or afternoon!
Fun course
It offers a good challenge. Course is kept in very good condition. The greens are in good shape and fair, couple of weird holes but overall enjoyable.
Not what I expected
I have had several friends and other run ins with people recommending I play this course. So I was pretty excited to use the holiday to play it. As soon as I turned on the road for the course I thought I was at the wrong place. All along the first hole it was over grown and looked neglected. There were areas that looked like a swamp and it hadn’t been maintained in awhile. Most of the cups were embedded into the soil which showed either laziness or lack of changing locations. And the tee boxes were beat. I don’t know what had changed in the time I played and when all my buddies played, but I was extremely disappointed.
The only positive thing from my experience was the clubhouse. It has a really fun vibe and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. Which I rarely come across, especially if they are having to deal with unhappy guests as myself.
Great course
Very scenic, the bar staff was lovely! Would play here again
