Barriere de Deauville Golf Club - Diane Barriere Course

Long enough from the back tees ronbe challenging even for long hitters. Punishing for too agressive plays, but overall pretty straightforward.

Would play it again with pleasure.

It ‘s a very old course wide fairways, lots of bunkers. Playable for all levels. The only negative is the locked bathroom at hole 7.

Englishman Tom Simpson was good enough as an Golden Era architect to inspire someone to form The Tom Simpson Society to commemorate his work. That's all the endorsement you need to know about this hilly and pleasant Simpson design in the Normandy region of France.

The only complaint would be that the course probably needs a renovation by a modern architect to reach its full potential. The bones are there, because the routing is good, but the conditioning and presentation don't always live up to Simpson's lofty legacy. Rocks in the bunkers and lots of patchy spots give the track a "muni" feel.

There are still many things to praise, though, too. Occasional views of the ocean and the seaside town of Deauville provided pleasant surprises throughout the round, as did a ruin of a castle wall on the back nine. Samuel Jackson and Morgan Freeman, who have come to Deauville for its popular film festival, have played the course, so it's never a bad idea to follow in the footsteps of Hollywood A-listers.
