Golf Heaven, but context is everything
If you are used to your country club and come into this place blind, you'll think, "meh."
Don't do that. Read "A Course Called Home" by Tom Cloyne. Better yet, read ALL of Tom Coyne's books.
ACCH chronicles the path Tom has taken to invest in and operate this little gem.
It's a depressed but beautiful area, and the course has been struggling for years. I won't recap the whole story, but you can clearly see decisions were made to maximize the scarce dollars in order to keep green fees low.
The rough is threadbare, the tees are shaggy (if you can find them....read the book to find out why), but the greens are nice, and the new layout is fantastic.
I walked in wiith my faithful beagle Maisie (who was greeted in the pro shop with open arms) and we enjoyed a liiesurely nine holes on a breezy summer afternoon.
It's not like the club I am a member of, which is well manicured. But....what is the best golf hole in the world? The one you are playing.
I have to say.......if I lived nearby, I'd trade my country club membership in for a membership here and never miss the country club.
Golf pass deal
Signed up for golf pass for the daily deal paid the fee online the add said cart included. After I arrived to check in guy said I owe zero then o wait you didn't pay for the cart.i told him the cart was included in the deal he proceeded to tell me he don't no about the deal so charged me another $20 for the cart. While on the round I found the deal to show him when I got back and he said i don't no about that hope your not mad. so 1st and last experience wasn't a good one. Course is in rough shape greens are beat and price is way to high for the experience
Fun and challenging layout. Welcoming staff. .
Played the course for the first time yesterday. Went in knowing that a few of the holes had in recent years undergone improvements and some hole reroutings. Was fun to play and can also understand the vision of the modifications and how the layout/challenges will only improve with age as the surrounding landscape grows out in the future. Had the nice experience of meeting Sean, of the greens keeping staff on the 2nd tee who couldn’t have been more accommodating in offering his local knowledge of playing the rest of the course as well as providing some course history. Played early and mid-week so knew that the restaurant/bar would not be open but did have an opportunity to walk through it…beautiful. Will definitely be back.
If you LOVE golf!
The course this year is run by newbie Tom Coyne….I highly recommend his books, they are a riot!
He is managing this little muni and changing the culture…..a stunningly beautiful venue in the Catskills into a pure golf experience.
The course is in great shape, unique and hilly with small true greens. The gentleman in the pro shop was an extremely friendly character, proud of what is happening at this gem.
One word of warning…Tom will most certainly write about his experience…..so be on your best behavior! If you are a character worthy of a chapter, put this on your list!
