Another Season of Owl's Nest Off to a Good Start
I was lucky enough to be the first golfer of the season to tee off at Owl's Nest after a 80-minute frost delay. My favorite course in New Hampshire remains exactly that and with signs of even more improvements.
The course conditions were good for Opening Day, with nice, fast greens and freshly mowed grass everywhere There were the usual soggy spots on a couple holes but nothing really to complain about.
The course is in the middle of redoing some tee boxes. They've completed the 13th's and are now working on the 10th where all the tees have been moved over to the forward tee box. They've also added more cart path or redone existing cart paths on several holes.
With it being Opening Day and there being an unexpected frost delay, there was some struggles with communication by the staff early on but overall everyone there is very friendly and courteous. Even the maintenance crew was noticeably excited about the return of golf to Owl's Nest.
I look forward to coming back again and again to see the continued improvements to the course!
New England Gem.
Amazing in every way. Spectacular views from almost every tee box. Course conditions and layout could not be better, although from my discussion with the manager, just wait and see what's in store for the near future. The largest construction site in NH will produce and even better experience soon. As far as the play is concerned this course simply suits the eye from every tee box. Fair but challenging. As an advanced golfer, I don't think I could have enjoyed it more. Many course in the area boast of these attributes, but Owls Nest delivers.
A Premier New England Course Still in Recovery
It breaks my heart to only give my favorite New England public golf course 4 stars for the first time but the conditions simply don’t warrant 5. The maintenance crew here seem to be doing the best they can with an absolutely awful hand dealt to them by the weather gods this past winter and spring.
Several greens have significant bare spots in them and some of the holes have areas that still can’t be mowed and are oversaturated, hampering play and playability. The rest of the course is still in great shape so it’s by no means bad throughout but certainly not up to what the course usually has.
The staff continues to be great here and the layout is still one of my absolute favorites. Hopefully they can get this course back to the standard I’ve played multiple times. A twilight rate here is still worth the underperforming conditions but if you’re looking to stay-and-play for a few days, maybe hold off for a bit.
Hidden Gem of New England
Title says it all. Easily one of my favorite courses of all time, not sure why it is not included in New England top 10 rankings - it really is only a matter of time.
The course is mint, the views are epic, and every hole is a blast. If you're looking to play some golf in the whites, I'd 100% play Owl's Nest over Mount Washington or any of the others.
Still the Best
I've reviewed this course before but recently played it again with a few buddies and wanted to provide additional feedback.
I've now played 75 golf courses in 9 states and this is still my #1. It's not cheap but it's hard to put a price on the awesome vistas from several holes on the back nine, the great condition they keep the course, the friendly staff, and the awesome food in the clubhouse.
Although the Clubhouse was in the middle of renovation, the impact to our round was minimal and overall experience unchanged.
It still have one of my favorite finishing holes of any course I've played and while the elevation changes are quite challenging, the uniqueness of the course is worth perhaps a higher-than-average score.
This last time, we stopped for food after the round and we all agreed the food was outstanding.
The two guys I played with had never played there before and the whole drive home they both just wanted to plan our next trip up there. I cannot recommend this course highly enough!
A Variety of Golf Holes With Great Mountain Views
I try to get to Owl's Nest once a year, but I had not been for a few years following the Great Flood of 2012. The course is all the way back and looking better than ever. Sadly it is closing early this year, on October 20th, to prepare for a possible sale to new owners, so for most it will have to be wait until next year. ON has an incredible variety of holes, in and around numerous hillsides and riversides. No two holes are alike and you will likely use every club in your bag. Picking the correct tee is crucial. The whites seem to play short to me at 6100, so the blues at 6400 may be better for most. The longer holes are predominantly downhill and the shorter ones are uphill. There is a stretch of funky hill holes on the back (13 - 15), but the other holes are more legit. The 2nd is a massively downhill, dogleg right that allows you to see the pond and the waste area below. The 16th is an even bigger descent, that can produce a 300 yard drive if you hit the fairway and let it run out. ON is quite a drive up I-93 to the White Mountains. Its just over 2 hours from Boston and 1 hour from Manchester, but its not outrageous. It is very busy on summer weekends, but weekdays and the off-season are great opportunities. This is the best course in the Loon and Waterville Mountains area and I would urge you to give it a try and take in this great course with great views.
Great Course
Wonderful scenery, excellent condition , friendly staff.
Great variety of holes
Elevation changes are challenging on back nine.Figuring out the break on several greens on the back nine can be difficult. Course conditions are wonderful. Read the playing tips on the scorecard for each hole; very helpful
Wonderful day out playing Golf
Own's Nest is one of the most beautiful courses in Central New Hampshire with Mountain views on the back nine. Worth the drive, but bring some extra balls as this course is going to challenge your golfing skills.
Beautiful mountain view setting
Owls Nest provided an extremely enjoyable 18 hole golf experience. I couldn't wait to arrive at each tee to see what the course had in store for us. The mountain views were impressive and the homes along the fairways were beautiful. Only blemish of the day was a brief downpour on 17, however, it was typical New England weather. If you don't like the weather...just wait a minute. We're already planning our next visit.
One Of The Best In NH
My Wife and I had a wonderful time playing this course. They paired us up with a couple of local guys (Jim & Bob) and they were wonderful guys to play with. The views are just beautiful all around the course and the course itself was in excellent condition considering the past winter. Kudos to the superintendent and the ground crew. We are looking forward to playing Owl's Nest again on our return this Fall.
early season, but excellent!
We had played another course in the area the day before and the conditions were terrible! Lots of winter damage in the fairways and especially on the greens.....Owls is in much, much better shape and the greens were great!! Really nice day of golf and the conditions given the harsh winter very good!!!!!!!
This course is so beautiful nestled in the mountains of northern NH.
Love this course. One of my favorite courses to play. Staff is very friendly. The beauty is beyond explanation.
Great condition
Greens and fairways are in very great condition. The layout is very nice.
Very Friendly Staff
Our group got behind a very slow group and pace was going to be 5+ hours. We called the pro shop and they sent out a ranger to politely ask the group in front to pick up the pace, which they did and we finished in less than 5 hours. Course was in great shape.
good course to play
Great lay out good views and good condition will go back in sunny weather some day
Consistently well-maintained facility
A notch above other public NH courses within an hour's drive . . .in my opinion worth the premium green fees (typically $30 to $40 more per round compared to other courses).
Course has great atmosphere
Beautiful course set in the White Mountains
Well maintained.
Friendly staff.
A hidden gem.
