Sweetbriar Golf Club - Legacy 18
About
Located in Avon Lake, Sweetbriar Golf Club boasts two scenic 18-hole courses that are routed through natural wetlands and forests. The front nine of the Legacy Course was built in 2002 and the back nine was added in 2007. The nines have different landscapes, creating a diverse set of holes that will have you using all the clubs in your bag. The front nine has a links design with winding fairways and large greens while the back nine was carved from forests. With natural wetland areas and a number of interesting risk-reward par 5s, the back of the golf course has more of an east coast feel. The other 18-hole course at Sweetbriar was built in the 60s. It is shorter than the Legacy but is still challenging, which makes it great for beginners.

Self inflicted Wounds
Hadn't rained in days in Avon Lake--and yet, through some course conditioning watering blunder--it was cart path only--which led to a 5 hr round. Hint--90% of the course was dry---rope off or cone wet areas and accomodate your guests
Wet
When dry, this course is really nice. Challenging and pretty. But you're surrounded by homes.
Pleasure to Play SweetBriar Legacy
Legacy in great shape .......I just wish my golf swing could rise to the occasion for a good score. The greens were rolling nicely, with good pace, and they sure held good approach shots. Actually, the entire course was a bit soft, thus not much roll-out with the fairway drives, or shots into the green. The 1pm start had a few 2somes get jamm'd up behind 4somes, so once we paired up by #4-hole, we had a better time & not sandwiched in between groups. The pace could have been a little quicker, but then again that 4+hrs was much better than watching the Browns get beat by the Jets. ProShop & Starter does great job of welcoming players, even if I am one of those who got the cheap Hot Deals Special.
Great place to play. Course is in excellent conditions with great greens.
Legacy in Great Condition
Last review of Legacy was affected by slow play --this Sunday 9/10 was awesome! We had so much fun at a nice pace-of-play, and awesome course conditions. The greens are soft, but rolling nicely ........I guess the only complaint would be about the gusting winds that affect my weak ball-striking, but that goes into a different review. This Sunday afternoon was uncrowded, and a great value attributed to GolfNow's Hot Deals Special. Thanx to all!
Great Course, Slow play
I booked a tee time for 5 pm on a Saturday which I figured might be busy but when I got out there there 4 groups on each hole. There were Rangers but they didn't say anything, they had more beers than shots played per hole. Great course that many people want to play. Just took forever but feel the 60 dollars around is why. People can pay half price after 2. Great course but not at 60 a round. They are trying to pay for both 18s with Legacy green fees
Legacy
Golf was great
Pro shop staff were curt and not very friendly
They obviously did not have any authority to make a decision....
Have played both courses many time and like both
Nice round
You need to play this course when you can find a big discount. They charge around $50 for a round which is overpriced. But, the course is a bit challenging and if you can catch it at the right time, the pace of play is really good.
Sweetbriar Legacy is Fun & Great Condition
Course is in great condition: tees, fairways & greens (rolling with nice speed & pretty true). My cart did not have dirt bucket to refill divots, which average golfers do poor job of repairing fairway turf or even ball marks on greens. If everyone looked around to fix a pitch-mark (& repair properly), greens would stay in better condition thru-out season. No complaints about Legacy, except how hole #6 has been changed/shortened & is now a "cheap" par4 (from what was originally the most difficult hole on front9). We had entertainment with wine festival #5-tee ........but just a super day on the course.
Fun layout & great course conditions
Busy course(s) on a Saturday afternoon --starter had his hands full. Course in really nice shape, in fact greens were very soft. Its a shame golfers don't replace divot/turf in fairways & fix as many ball-marks on greens as they can. Its a shame that #6hole had to be changed/shortened to appease the home-owners on the right-side, because the hole changed from a challenge to "cheap." Except for my poor golf, it was a fun afternoon @ Legacy.
Green in Bad Shape and Really Squishy Fairways
Green in Bad Shape and Really Squishy Fairways. It was Cart path only and I wish I would have known that when booking. They should have conditions on GolfNow. That way I would have known it was cart path only and I would have gone somewhere else due to time.
wet But fast
So just so happened to book a time when we had a lot of rain that morning, I went out Solo and got around in 2.5 hours,, It was like I was the only guy out there,, greens had a lot of standing water but I still posted a score of 82,, Good for me since I've only broke 80 5 times,, if the greens weren't as wet as the were I'm sure I would have broke 80 again,, Fun local course, I love when I see it in the Hot deals because its a great little course..
First time playing Legacy
Drove up from Virginia beach to visit a friend. Played Sweetbriar Legacy. Course was in great condition. Pace was a little slow but about average. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Would definitely recommend to a friend!!! Thanks Sweetbriar Legacy for a good time.
Early August Review
Sweetbriar Legacy is probably the best course on the west side of Cleveland in terms of design and playability. It is a higher end public golf course, it gets a ton of play from leagues, outings, and general public.
The layout is one of my favorite in the area, its challenging without being overly penal. Holes 7 and 11 are two of my favorite holes of any course in the area. The course is wide and allows all types of shots to be played.
The issues I have with Legacy are the leagues and outings. The leagues are overbooked, play slow, and players don't help maintain the course by fixing ball marks and divots. Despite those issues, Sweetbriar still sell tee times in between leagues and outings. For this I don't recommend Legacy compared to other courses in the area.
Overbooking makes everyone sad!
When this course is in goid shape it is one of my favorite tracks on the West Side of Cleveland. That being sad the greens are more and more disappointing. It's as if noone has ever repaired a ball mark..... EVER!!!!
On top of that they overbooked the course on a league night. I played the front nine in a very reasonable 70 minutes as a single. Only to make turn into league play. After 90 minutes and 3 holes I had to leave. I felt cheated out of my remaining holes of golf.
Course is maturing nicely
Been a couple of years since I played the Legacy at Sweetbriar. It is maturing very nicely. Rough is thick and challenging affording defense considering many of the front 9 holes are short. Added length on the back is slightly incongruous, but all in all a pretty cool place to play. Has that private club feel.
