Sweetbriar Golf Club - Legacy 18
About
Located in Avon Lake, Sweetbriar Golf Club boasts two scenic 18-hole courses that are routed through natural wetlands and forests. The front nine of the Legacy Course was built in 2002 and the back nine was added in 2007. The nines have different landscapes, creating a diverse set of holes that will have you using all the clubs in your bag. The front nine has a links design with winding fairways and large greens while the back nine was carved from forests. With natural wetland areas and a number of interesting risk-reward par 5s, the back of the golf course has more of an east coast feel. The other 18-hole course at Sweetbriar was built in the 60s. It is shorter than the Legacy but is still challenging, which makes it great for beginners.

Great Course for $30
Have always liked this course - always well kept, moderately challenging. A little short at times - but I enjoy because I have the chance to hit a lot of the clubs in my bag. Nice range, which is usually always open, and good overall facilities. Not a bad course to play when wet since it drains decently and cart path only isn't a bear.
I like to play it during the week only for a few reasons:
1) Weekend tee times at $60 do not present a great value. The course itself, IMO, is not worth that. Nice, and worth playing, but I won't pay that much.
2) Pace of play - less people during the week can make for a 2-3 hour round. Weekends can take 4-5 hours with people packed in.
Overall - I would recommend, but not on the weekends, especially if it is packed. Also a great course if you get up early to be first off the tee. Its under a 2 hour round before work.
Great customer service on both ends
Booked a hot deal the day before where rain was supposed to end around noon (12:32 tee time). Arrived to the course with a heavy rainfall, the gentleman in the proshop said they had atleast an inch of rain fall and no one was on the course. Called golf now and they "made an exception" after contacting the course even though hot deals are non refundable. Haven't played legacy this year, but look forward to playing with better weather.
Na
For the time of year course was in excellent shape. Challenging but fair
Sweetbrier Avon lake
Enjoyed the round, course in good condition considering recent dry spell we have had. Greens held vey well and were in very good condition. We started our round around 3:30 on the back nine and worked our way to the front. We had absolutely no waiting, unbelievable. Cost for the $18 was just over a dollar a hole.
Legacy course is beautiful
One of the nicest public courses you will find. Loved it
Don't waste your time or money!
Although the clubhouse, restaurant and pro shop are nice, the course is terrible. The layout is boring and forgettable and the conditions are even worse. The fairways are mostly burned out and the greens are beat up. Played with a discounted rate and was still a rip off. Wish I would have went somewhere else. Will not be back.
Always a great place to be.
The course was in great shape, while others in the area have been in very rough shape because of the recent drought. Challenging pin positions made our outing frustratingly fun.
Tough Day at Legacy
The course was saturated. Cart path only which was not disclosed at booking.
The group I was supposed to play with showed up with extra players. The starter sent me out by myself without trying to pair me up elsewhere. It was a miserable experience and I quit after 9 holes of endless waiting
Lovely day at Legacy
The front 9 of Legacy is easier, as it is conserably shorter. The grounds crew takes good care of the course (they were out as I played in the morning, and paused as I approached).
Fairways were lush, and the greens were receptive and rolled well. Note: few putts break as much as it would appear.
I live nearby, and the course is often busy. The regular cost is also pricey ($59 on Fridays and weekends), so be sure to look for a GolfNow deal.
Legacy Sunday 8-7-2016
Sunday afternoon round. Good value and plenty of staff available. Guys in front of us playing about three balls a piece slower pace of play drastically. Ranger watched it happen and didn't do a thing about it. Greens rolled really poorly and appeared to be in pretty rough shape .... Love the course have played it a bunch as I live 10 min away. Was very disappointed in today's round
5 1/2 Hour Weekend Round
I played the Sweetbriar Course. Greens were in great shape and rolled well. Fairways and rough were burnt out, which is understandable given the very dry summer in NE Ohio.
Unfortunately, the experience at Sweetbriar is awful. The greed of management was obvious by how overbooked the course was and the incredibly slow pace of play. At several points during the round there were four groups between the green and the next hole's tee box. The experience for every golfer would significantly improve if management would turn away the extra money and stop allowing so many golfers on the course. I understand that is the decision management has made; however, for my next round of golf I will make the decision for another golf course.
OLD COURSE AT SWEETBRIAR
Played their old course. The drought is affecting this course pretty severely, so I won't hold the brown rough and the patchy fairways against them too much, but they do not maintain this course like they do the Legacy. It's barely 6000 from the blues, no sand, and a small creek meanders through the course as the only real trouble. The greens were in nice shape, had good speed, but did not break. The biggest issue I have is that on 5 or 6 holes there are trees that stick out over the blue tees that really need trimmed back. Good course for beginners and walkers. I've played here a few times over the years and beware, the drainage on the course is very poor. If there's a good rain even 4-5 days before your round it may still be cart path only.
Sweetbriar- 18
Course in terrible shape. Fairways were the worst! Members n starter were rude. I'll never go back.
Sweetbriar Legacy is Country Club for Public Golf
Considering how hot & dry the weather has been, course is in great shape, with nice putting greens. Fairways are hard & fast, but the difficult holes still require good swings at the ball. I was joined with 3 other singles (the Starter does a great job of making groups if you have no friends), and they chose the White shorter tee markers. I played the front9 well, but wilted down the stretch and hurt my scoring potential. Staff does a fine job, and clubhouse is naturally well kept & enjoyable. Like I said in my title, this is a public course with the Country Club service & appeal.
Play to your skill level people.
So, the course is beautiful and well kept. I have played here numerous times and love it. The weekends here the pace is a bit slow, but to be expected. With that being said, today was awful. Played behind a group of 3 who felt the need to play from the black tees "the tips" first player shanks into the water, drops a second ball and worm burns it just to the ladies tees. Players 2 and 3 both hit massive banana balls into another holes fairway and continue to hit second tee shots at the first hole :-/ On numerous occasions as we had the joy of following them it was nothing but chunks and skull shots and banana balls all day, not to mention the rock concert they were conducting with their bluetooth speaker. I am a 5 handicap and don't feel the need to play from the blacks here the course is plenty challenging from the Blues.
I also am not saying that the black tees are reserved for the best players, but come on, play to your skill level. They also failed to repair their divots ( more like chunks) of turf. At some point after the turn, they must have caught up to friends or whatever and started playing as group of 5. The worst part of the ordeal was the ranger saw it, said nothing, and allowed it to continue.
I know this is petty complaining but I guess the hack artists today just finally go to me. But, seriously if you have not played here before it is a wonderful little course.
I agree, the course is nice, but it's sooo slow some days. I admit I'm not great (usually shoot in mid 90s), but I like to play fast. Slow play is annoying!
Great Day
Totally enjoyed my day of golf at this course. Will look forward to coming again soon.
Legacy is always in great condition..but..
I'll first say that on the west side, legacy is one of the top courses. However, the lower rating is solely due to the extremely slow pace of play, at any time of day. The starters TRY to help with that, however they throw groups into the back 9.. Without even checking who's coming up the fairway on #9. These groups tend to be uneducated at proper rules/etiquette. Such as, letting a twosome play through the slow pace of play foursome. The rangers are either powerless, or too easy on the groups they pass... Inform your foursomes (some times they let groups of 5 play) that you are to let faster, smaller groups play through.. A twosome can hold up a foursome for half a hole, where a slow foursome can hold up an entire golf course. Ok that's it, other than that.. Great course!!!!
easier than expected
First the course was in wonderful shape. The greens were a little slow and didn't break at all straight putts all day. A couple Mickey Mouse holes on the jammed in. You can see where a lot of bunkers have been removed, but the grass has grown in well. Sometimes it seems the ownership was more concerned with building a course that looks pretty from the development homes rather than true championship layout. Barely 6000 yards from the blue tees. I guess I should have played the blacks. Play it if you can get a deal, and the staff was excellent, plus beverage cart on weekend.
Note: No walking allowed on Legacy course due to distance between holes.
Cart path only
I have both knees replacement the front nine was wet but no way was the back nine wet we had to find yardage markers which slow down play. We could not find no drinking water on this course. I purchased a cart because of my bad knees. If I knew cart path only I would had stayed home. Brunswick
To clarify this review was for the Sweetbriar 18, not the Legacy course.
