Apollo Elks Country Club

About
Apollo Elks Country Club, situated just northeast of Pittsburgh, is considered one of the area's must-play golf courses. It has appeal for a wide range of skill levels with a layout that is challenging enough for seasoned golfers but also not too difficult for beginners to approach. There is an interesting mix of holes ranging from reachable par 5s to short, tough par 3s and each hole has a distinct character. The greens are fast and the gently rolling terrain provides some subtle breaks that can be tricky. Bunkering is sparsely but strategically placed along the fairways and greensides. There are also a few water hazards that come into play at Apollo Elks Country Club. The round has plenty to hold your attention but don't forget to stop and admire the beautiful western Pennsylvania scenery.

Gravel fairways
The course is in a serious state of disrepair. There's gravel near one of the greens. Cart paths are worse than construction sites. Poorly labeled. Parking lot is as bad or slightly worse than the cart paths. This is what a failing golf course looks like.
Golf course is always a go to, due to them getting you out almost at any time. Was super slow play and fairways were a bit dried out. But, still a good track and got a great deal.
Ok in a pinch
Course was fine. The biggest problem was with the starter/counter person/ranger
Since not elk members we felt like we were treated differently than a member would be treated. The person who checked us in was also the ranger. He was constantly following us and did nothing while the foursome in front of us was so slow we waited on every shot. We told the ranger about it and he did nothing (they were probably elk members. Then at the end there was poor signage for cart returns. 2 older guys sitting in front of the pro shop said to take the carts to the garage since that’s were were cleaned. There was a sign saying “cart return” with an arrow pointing toward the garage. This made the walk to our car but….. whatever. As we throwing out the trash the ranger drove down and asked what we were doing. We told him we were returning the carts where he said “can’t you read?” Turns out they wanted you to drive into the grass behind the pro shop. As we left the cart we overheard the ranger mocking us in front of the 2 guys sitting in front of the pro shop (probably his friends or members). Bottom line , we didn’t feel welcome there
Over priced, bad condition and awful clientele
For $25-30 this wouldn’t be bad for 18 holes. Any more than that is unreasonable. Cart paths are awful, course was in rough shape with no one fixing divots on tee boxes, in fairways or on greens. Staff was extremely friendly and accommodating which is the sole saving grace. Be sure to bring a gallon of bug spray, I understand there’s only so much that can be done for bugs but they’re the worst I’ve ever seen at any course.
Also be prepared for a fight or confrontation based on the other golfers we encountered. Got stuck behind 2 guys who seemed more concerned with mowing down cigarettes than actually golfing. Both hitting 4-5 balls every shot, taking 25 minutes minimum per hole and never offered to let us play through. Finally had enough and after I waiting for them to tee off, went to pass them to get to the next hole and they threw beer at us and I’m not sure what else while screaming obscenities, then proceeded to run to the fairways I was playing to steal our balls after we hit. They weren’t young kids either, late 50’s early 60’s would be my best guess. As we waited for these immature geriatrics we kept getting yelled at and hit into by the group behind us.
All in all, would not recommend unless you have a free pass, or a friend that is paying for your round. SO many batter options around the area.
Local solid GC
Great friendly staff. Course challenging but fair, with many blind holes. No water or benches in the field. Large rocked and rough cart paths in many locations. Drive slow even as the play can be slow at times.
Overall a good course with good greens. For the price an ok course. I will play here again.
Nice course
Good, challenging course with mostly well-placed hazards and a few needle-threading tee shots, especially from the blues. Staff is friendly and helpful.
Nice Time
Everything was good except the cart paths need some work.
Slow play on a hot day
Course is always fun to play but this round was difficult. It apparently.rained a lot the night before so the course was pretty soggy in spots. It was a really hot day and the two foursomes in front of us were playing very slow to the point where we waited a while on every shot. We had enough after 14 holes and called it a day. I guess we just picked the wrong day to play. Better luck next time I hope.
Apollo Elks July 2023
Nice layout of the course and good value for your money. I'll definitely play here again for the price. Carts are newer, challenging holes and some basic holes, plenty of dog legs. Little bit more care of the details would be nice like cart paths and weeds around water and tee boxes. Solid course for the price.
Nice round
Course was in good shape. Greens were a little slow but ran true.. 3 hour round on a hot Saturday afternoon was a welcome occurrence.
Basic course
Fairways are super hard. Greens were a little slow, but in good shape. It was a little too hot for golf.
Except course very well maintained. Only known l is the cart paths are horrendous!!
