Wish they’d level the tee boxes
Grew up playing NKGC multiple times a week. This course has always offered pretty decent resident discounts.
Let’s start with the layout. I’ve always liked the layout. Its a great mix of challenge and rewarding. There are some shorter holes, but also a few longer ones. The greens are generally smaller, but mostly flat. It’s a track that you can bomb your way around; but also makes you think. Conditions are a little better than what you’d expect from a municipal course. The fairways and first 10 feet of rough are always well kept. The greens can be a little bumpy, and on the slower side but I think they host a ton of tourney and league play so that’s expected. The bunkers are penalizing, as they should be. My only real complaint with the course itself is the tee boxes. Most if not all are not even close to flat. If they made this one change and leveled all of their teeing grounds, I’d say this is a top 5 public course in RI, easily.
They do have a practice facility, though the teeing ground is uneven.
Pace of play is about what you’d expect at a muni. They cater to league play, so forget playing 18 holes after noon time.
My only real complaint is with the staff. I usually play as a single, and unless the course is wide open, I’ve had a few problems getting out despite seeing multiple 2 and 3-somes on the tee sheet. I’m also a little skeptical of the professionalism of the PGA pro here as I’ve seen up either at the bar or on the patio with 3 or 4 bud lights in front of him on multiple occasions.
Course in great shape as always
Haven't played this course in years and it had always been fun to play. This time was no exception. Check-in easy, starter very personable and got us off on time. Course, fairways and greens in great shape. Greens just a touch slow but I think after the weekend they just needed a cut. Not a problem at all. Pace excellent 3 3/4 hour round, no backups or holdups. After round we had lunch on patio overlooking 9th green and service was great and food perfect. All in all a great day.
Fun course with some interesting holes
This is a fun local course in NK. It’s pretty forgiving and short 6100 approximately from the tips, well maintained, and has some well placed sand traps that make you think twice on your approach shots. The greens were pretty good had been aerated somewhat recently but have healed and ran true though didn’t play that much break except for a few holes. The back 9 has some fun holes that are somewhat blind and brings a little water into play with a nice view of Narragansett bay in the background. My only complaint would be that it was very slow. It was a 1:30pm Sunday afternoon beautiful fall day and people were going very slow. For the amount of people on the course I would have thought we’d finish in a under 4 hours but it took us 4.5 to finish 18 with lots of waiting in the tee box. Otherwise great course, not too demanding but I would play there again & hope to score better :)
Left After Nine Holes
Pace of play was horrible. Started about 15 minutes later than scheduled tee time. After the first hole we waited for the next group to tee off on hole number two, after the second hole there were two groups waiting to tee off on the next hole which is a par three. Called the pro shop in hopes a ranger could be sent out to pick up pace but even though someone did ride out it didn't change. There was a wait on every hole which resulted in taking almost three hours to play nine holes after which I left.
I was chatting with the groups ahead of us and were told they were lifelong residents of North Kingston and stopped playing the course for a couple years because of pace of play being so slow. Sounds like things have not changed there.....a ranger is desperately needed at this course to regulate pace of play.
Awesome groundskeeping
Weather was as good as it gets. Course was in incredible shape. Even after rain the previous night, the course was fairly well drained and manageable. Starter was very friendly (great people person), and we went off about 10-min before our start time. Just one of those rounds we’re the golf Gods kept giving you a thumbs up!
Slow Play ruined the round
The back nine pace slowed down to a crawl. There was a foursome in front of us that had three holes open ahead of them. People behind us called the clubhouse and so did I. The ranger finally came out when they were on the 16th hole but it did not help because when we got to the 18th there were two full groups on the tee waiting for the slow group to putt out. A 3 hour back nine.
Play here
Very good layout. Provides challenges and opportunities for all levels. Currently in great condition. Greens are outstanding.
Pace
Course is always great. Would’ve been nice if a marshal was out to speed the pace up.
Great to back
Worcester Tuesday Golf Group here played North Kingstown 7-31. After a bad experience last year some of our players didn't want to go back, well we're glad we did. let's start with the staff couldn't have been more friendly from the phone call that we placed to get the tee time to when we all showed up excellent excellent. A clubs were picked up in a professional manner in the parking lot, behind the desk when we paid everything was great the course conditions were excellent. When we were all done the most frequent request from the players is can you see if we can come back instead of waiting a whole year. The service in the restaurant after was excellent from Shelly and Donna service with a smile and efficient. John and Brian turn this whole situation 180 degrees around from last year what a Time.
Great Value for Public Course
One of best public courses in Rhode Island. Conditions are consistent around course and greens are usually in great shape. Best time of year to play course is late fall (Sept to Oct). Great deals weekend twilight rates (especially town residents). Layout is solid with great views of Narragansett Bay on back 9. Blue Tees play 6,200, but there are several tough holes that play long (#2, #7, #8, #11). Some fun shorter par 4 holes (#9 and #17). Grass practice range with practice bunker is a plus. Overall great value.
Best Muni in the Area
This course has enough challenge to it if you play from the Blue tees. The rough is in good shape but this courses best attribute is the Greens. They are the fastest greens for a public course, They roll true. Challenge on the back side is the wind off the bay. By the way this area is also the most scenic. Great views of the Bay. Since course is next to the Quonset airfield you must play during the yearly Air Show. Planes fly right over your head.
Much Improoved
Solid layout. In great shape. Even the few greens they have had problems with in the past are superb right now. Tree removal program has helped . Fat Belly's Pub a great addition!
Greens in bad shape
Greens are brown and have dirt patches. Just aerated so they are bumpy and slow as well.
Greens are in bad condition.
This was a good golf course but all the greens are now in very bad condition.
Good course for the price paid.
My group sailed through the front 9 in about 2 hours. Play slowed a bit on the back when we caught up with a small outing that had been sent out the back 9. Course was in ok condition. Greens were thin and some fairways had water damage.
Not a great value
Greens were in bad shape. Cart paths were in poor shape. Several fairways were soggy, apparently due to poor drainage.
