The beauty of the natural terrain and the way Jones fit the golf course into it is truly spectacular. Situated alongside the Santa Cruz River, the course meanders into the surrounding hillsides where the sunlight casts mystical purple and yellow shadows in the late afternoon. Holes 5 to 8 are considered one of the finest four hole stretches in the state, ending with the 439 yard No. 8. Teeing off from high on the hill, the fairway drops off twice before your long approach shot settles onto a green framed by a reed filled pond to the right and a gaping bunker to the left.

Greens need more work to make this course as great as it could be
Rio Rico is a challenging course with a diverse layout and nice setting South of Green Valley.
The course has all new golf carts this year. The pace of play is fast, between 3 1/2 - 4 hours. The tee boxes and fairways are in pretty good shape. The greens seem to be getting better, but still need more work. Hopefully, it will all come together because it's a great course to play!
It's been a couple of years since I've played Rio Rico and unfortunately it has gone down hill quite a bit.
This layout used to be an excellent track, in great condition, but now, it needs some serious attention and $$$! The greens were terrible, and the sand traps that used to have good and plenty of sand are not so much any more. This is a great layout that just needs some serious attention!
The pace of play was great because no one was out there playing. For a Saturday, it was like a ghost-town!
A work in progress
This course had been allowed to deteriorate. They are trying to
bring it back but are not there yet. It is just going to take some time. The greens are still pretty rough but the fairways are coming
along nicely. It is a great layout. The staff is very cordial.
The day we played there the play was slow, taking about 5 hours.
Needs Lots Of Attention
The course has a long way to come back to being the #1 resort in southern Arizona. They are trying but I will not go back for at least another year. The price I secured through golfnow was outstanding and that was the primary reason for going all the way to Nogales.
One of the best layouts in Southern Arizona.
I play this course regularly, and have observed the tremendous effort put into it by the staff. Their work is paying off. The tee boxes, fairways, and rough are in good shape. The greens are coming along, and they are focusing resources on them and will soon after address the bunkers which are still mostly hard pan. In addition to normal course issues, they have had to deal with javelinas rooting up fairways and free range cattle wandering the course. Golfing here is a great experience. It has one of the best layouts in Southern Arizona, has great scenery, abundant wildlife, and no houses anywhere near the course. It is also a great monetary value. I am always surprised by the complaints about its condition. Most American golfers are spoiled. If you have ever played any links courses abroad (and I have) ... you would not complain. Frankly, I think this is the kind of course that golf should be played on. That is, one where if you hit errant shots you really get punished, and where every lie and putt is not perfect. I really like this course because you really need to plan and execute your shots ... sometimes in difficult conditions. It prepares me to play even better on easier courses. So ... get over it and play a fun, challenging, interesting course that is a real value. I would even give it another star when the greens and bunkers are improved per their plan.
Great Price
I played last week and the course has come along way. The fairways and tee boxes are in excellent shape. The greens and bunkers still need some work but are very playable. Not sure about the guy who made last review about water rights? I looked into that and asked the pro to which he said they are on a well and have ample water. Maby this guy played a different course because the overseeding at RR came out better than others in the area.
Interesting Course
Course was generally in nice shape except the greens were marginal and the sand traps were hardpan/mud mixture in some cases.
We also encountered some rude people who cut in front of us at hole #10 and played extremely slow, no marshall in attendance. The first nine was great and we skipped one hole on the back to keep up our pace of play.
Dad Course
This golf course is in horrible shape. I understand that they lost their water rights and I am sorry for that, but I have played in better cow pastures. I will now play their ever again unless they get it fixed. Ron Harmon
Potential
Course is nestled in a canyon area near the border. As soon as you arrive to turn into the entrance you can see the course is in dire need of attention. Layout is good. Seemed over watered and several holes had construction on them for water system repairs. Several greens were close to being lost to either mold or weeds. Fairways were descent but there were several drop zones. Sand Traps were severally neglected and basically were all waste bunkers and hard as rock. Tee boxes were being let grown out. Greens need new grass…looks like they are trying but there is a lot of work to do in order for me to drive from Tucson again to play.
Course needs a lot of maintenance
The greens are in poor shape witha a lot of areas where the grass has died. The best thing going for it is that it is a good design.
Disappointing conditions
After most courses had spent October getting ready for tourist season, I was surprised how bad the greens were. They had lots of bare spots and bumps. Play somewhere else.
great course
thanks for giving people like me away to play golf at an affordable price.
Great Layout. Playable, but not great shape.
Rio Rico has a great layout with an enjoyable combination of easy and challenging holes. It is not in great shape, but a joy to play. Some of the greens have lumpy spots; there are cow pies around the course since it is open range; and there are bad spots in some fairways from rutting Havalinas, but there are also local rules that get you relief from them. Not a pristine course, but I enjoy its challenge. I would rather play Rio Rico than some other courses, less interesting courses in the area--the price is well worth it.
Always A Fun Course
Still Love The Layout Of This Course & Will Always Play There If In The Area. That Being Said Course Was Not In Very Good Condition But The Price Was Right. Staff Is Very Freindly.
Great layout that could use some care & improvement
Always enjoyed this course no matter the conditions. It appears that javelina are enjoying some of the fairways also. Staff is great. However, some of the greens are in poor shape.
good value will likely be better in a few weeks
course rough and cattle wandering but added to "charm" no pressure to rush and a good value for the $ We had a good time and maintenance staff super friendly
It is a great layout.
I like the course because it is challenging but fair. Unfortunately, they allow 5 and 6 players per group.
Could be a great course.. needs some help though
The greens need a little more attention. Course was slushy due to over seeding.
This course was Great in past, but cows on the fairways, dung on fairways, and greens and t-boxes were like "range land", with "mud pits" for traps.
So sad the conditions of this course. Hope new management does the right thing and fixes this once lovely course back to a recovery. Will not recommend playing here until conditions significantly improves, fairways, greens and t-boxes. Fairways were saturated and had many spots where it was standing water. SADDD!!!.
Needs some attention
Played the course just after reseeding. Long grass on fairways. Was even difficult to spot your ball on the fairway. Greens are not so well maintained. Bird damage on some of them. Slow and does not hold line very well.
Lay out of this course is very nice.
They started mowing when we were playing, so conditions should be better shortly.
