The beauty of the natural terrain and the way Jones fit the golf course into it is truly spectacular. Situated alongside the Santa Cruz River, the course meanders into the surrounding hillsides where the sunlight casts mystical purple and yellow shadows in the late afternoon. Holes 5 to 8 are considered one of the finest four hole stretches in the state, ending with the 439 yard No. 8. Teeing off from high on the hill, the fairway drops off twice before your long approach shot settles onto a green framed by a reed filled pond to the right and a gaping bunker to the left.

The club has changed management and MUCH for the better. The course is in very rough condition with greens under and needing repair.
Course is in transition with significant improvement expected within 3-6 months. With condition improvement and the course layout, it will return to very challenging for any golfer at any level.
Fairways are nice, great trees through-out the course, greens definitely need help. Several of the greens should be calld "sandy".

Always a fun and challenging course. Greens need attention, but will come around since they just finished overseading. Fairways are good.
Always a fun and challenging course. Greens are in rough condition, but will come around in the next few weeks as they just finished overseading. Overall the course is in good shape and looks to be improving all the time. Love to play there.
Back on track!
I played Rio Rico in early October and it was in extremely poor shape. I told myself that I was not going to come back! My friend ventured to the course last week and told me there had been some significant changes taking place under new management. I decided to try it again and played on 11/05. WOW, what a change! The tee boxes had new growth, the fairways were lush! I also appreciated the striping down the fairways which gave it complete definition. The sand traps which were once overgrown with bermuda are now cleaned up and very playable. The greens are still a bit patchy but compared to the last time I played NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE. I am so happy to see somebody putting time and resources into this course because I truly belive it is the best design in southern AZ.
The course is getting better.
The course went through some rough conditions this summer. The fairways now have grass and most of the greens are getting better. There are still a few greens that need help. Over all the course is in fair shape.
Greens were horibble, unplayable.
Not worth the drive from Tucson, go to Chandler instead if you want to get out of town to golf. The greens were completely unplayable. Messed up the rest of the game, you couldn't do anything on the greens.
Rio Rico
The course needs some help on the greens they are in very bad sharp, almost not playable.I will not play this couse for two months.
Greens are nearly dead
We played the course just after over seeding. the fairways were coming in but the ground was very wet and it was cart paths only. The greens had been so neglected and unmowed with large patches of dirt and holes, we quit after nine holes.
The Course is a super layout.
This course had been just opened after overseeding; therefore, it still had not been mowed to regular length. The Coot problems were not evident as was the case when the northern ducks fly down (scat everywhere). The greens were not in great shape...bumps and dead patches. The beauty of the course makes up for the criticism...but the coot scat of last winter reminds a test.
potentially a terrific course
I had not played this course in several years so I was expecting more than I got. The front 9 was terrible, greens that you could not putt on and fairways with very little grass. The back 9 was better. 50% of the greens were worth putting and the fairways had new grass. If the management continues to work on the course and keeps the rates down, I think you will see a remarkable difference in the near future (2 to4 months). I hope this will be the case. Make no doubt about it, this could be one of the better courses in southern Arizona. A lot of potential!
Very dissapointing
I have played this course a number of times in the past 25 years and have never seen it in such terrible condition. It is not quite a "goat pasture", but it is very close. Evidently it is under brand new management, so perhaps it will improve with time, but currently it is awful.
this course used to be a PGA qualifing course
They have let this course deteriorate so bad it is hardly worth playing. I heard they sold the golf course to some California company. MAYBE this new owner will bring it back WE CAN ONLY HOPE.
RTJ course in terrible condition
Usually a fairly well maintained RTJ course.. but past few years downhill. We played 9/28 and the course was in the worst condition I have seen.. Greens gone. Fairways too. Needs TLC and water!
Good course at one time, but not now.
Work was being done on front 9, so played back 9 twice. Fairways recently mowed, but greens were in terrible shape-some were unplayable. The greens appear to have been neglected for a long time-weeds, rough, not watered and large sections of bare dirt in places.
Smoke & Mirrors
I was drawn to this course by the mention of the designer, Robert Trent Jones, Sr. I enjoy seeing the game through the eyes of prominent golf course designers. I was not put off by the number of other quality golf opportunities I bypassed to reach Rio Rico. But when I hit my first drive just 5 yds off the fairway and had to search for it in rough that covered my shoes, almost entirely, I felt like I'd chosen foolishly. The layout is fine, not tricky or overly easy. The condition of the course, however, was terrible when I played. The fairways were unusually long and the turf was soggy; I assumed they weren't able to get the mowers out of the soft turf due to recent rains. I may return when I hope conditions are better, but it will be hard to pass up those same great courses again and/or to take on the 1+ hour drive just hoping for better playing conditions. The highlights, however, were the price and the speed. There was hardly anyone there, so I was able to finish 18 holes in 2.5 hrs. Sadly, the same amount of time it took me to drive there and back from Vail.
the course is fun to play it
The greens needed a lot of work other then that every thing else was in prety good conditions, I have play these cours a lot of time and every time I play it me and my friends have a lot of fun playing it.
Great layout. Course improving.
The greens were in fair to poor condition. Pace of play was very slow. Too many people on course. No starter leading to confusion on 1st hole. Fairways OK to fair. Start was 20 minutes later than scheduled.
