Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2021.

The Apache Stronghold Golf Course is situated upon pristine land that, according to legend, was created by the God Usen to provide the Apaches with everything they needed to survive. It was called the Apache Stronghold because it had the protection of the Chiricahuas, Aravaipas, Superstition and White Mountains, and it is said that here the Apaches could walk invisibly among their enemies. The scenic golf course is the centerpiece of the Apache Gold resort. The unique landscape provides elevated tees, desert arroyos, and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. This 7,519-yard golf course will reward long hitters but golfers should be mindful of the washes and arroyos that crisscross the fairways. The layout doesn't have any water but there are 50 strategically placed bunkers coming into play and the rolling terrain provides plenty of hazards. Many holes are carved right into the foothills.

Great Day

The course is looking good and you can see the work getting done.
Best fairways is SE AZ, and the value was great. Traveled 80 miles from Safford Az. where they do not understand summer values (38.00).

Can't wait to go next week.

Great views, friendly staff, fun course.

We enjoy playing this course, the staff is working hard to improve the conditions, with fertilizer, grass seed and some sod the turf conditions are improving. There is still work needed on the bunkers, they are improving those now. The rough is high right now so keep it in the fairway. You will enjoy this course, we do that is why we keep coming back. You will find the course very difficult at first, but when you are used to playing, it is very manageable and birdies .are achievable on every hole. Enjoy!

On its way back to the top

This course at one time was in the top five courses in Arizona little over ten years ago. The course was mismanaged and devastated for years. In the last year the course is beginning to see new life again, The staff and management are taking strives to get the course back to the pristine condition it once had. The course is long, challenging, scenic, truly a diamond in the rough, and still worth the drive up from the Valley.

A fun course with scenic views

Parts of the course were in great shape and then there were places that really need attention. Some grass seed would work wonders. Some tee boxes were completely untended and some of the greens had BIG bare spots. It looked as if they just don't care. I'd say 70% of the course was in great shape and the rest just needs some TLC.

The course is making it's comeback...greens are much improved!

So I found myself up in Globe, AZ for the day. I have seen the reviews get stronger and more positive for this course over the last year. I figured, why not give it a try and see how it's going. First of all, the staff were very friendly. They talked with me at length on the improvements and progress under way. They provided all the free bottled water and ice you would need, and then some. The course itself is a fairly interesting layout, with a nice mix of risk/ reward and bombers holes. There are a few really tough holes on the course that will force even the longest hitters to keep it in the right spots or take the medicine. The conditions were getting there. The greens have come in for the most part, with only a few dirt patches here and there. Quite playable and smooth , true roll on them. The fairways were not too bad either, they were more akin to a muni course than a resort, but improved to the point of good playability. The bunkers however, remain a glaring sore spot on the course. Many of them are still just overgrown and full of dirt and rocks. Give yourself a Free drop and play on. The good news is that they have a HUGE PILE OF BRAND NEW SAND, just waiting to go in those bunkers. I can see this being a really solid course in another year. Kudos to the staff, who truly do seem to love this course and are routing hard for it's quick return. SO, if you are in Globe and ready for a round, it is reasonable in price, playable and challenging. Just don't expect resort conditions yet. I gave a 3 star because they are there in most aspects....the views went a ways in helping that too.

The quality of the course is improving

The views on the golf course are the best I have ever seen on any golf course in Arizona. No houses just mountain views, critters and a great course layout.I mentioned at the pro shop at the end of my round that they doing a good job of getting the course back in great shape.

THE COURSE HAS IMPROVED, BUT STILL NEEDS MORE WORK

The course has improved dramatically over the last several months, but still needs more work. The bunkers are a complete disaster, and often must be played as GUR. Pro shop was disinterested and many routine items (gloves, etc), were unavailable. The restaurant staff was measurably more cordial and attentive than the pro shop.

Great design, good greens, fair fairway, lousy traps.

The design shows why Tom Doak is world's best. Every hole is a jewel and in tune w/ its surroundings! The Tribe is working hard to revive the course. The greens were in great shape - fast and smooth. The fairways are fair. Short grass with some bare spots but playable. The sand traps have no sand just a soft dirt. Obviously something to fix. We took a free drop and played on!

If you like resort golf with green grass, silky sand then don't play Apache Stronghold (or go to Scotland.) But if you appreciate great design, fair conditions, low price this course is for you! My wife and I will drive the 160 miles r/t to play again - bonus scenery on drive is out of this world!

Great Potential

Pros:
Friendly people
Bottled Water for free on the course
Nice piece of property

Cons:
Dirt paths make for a really dusty round
Fairways are sparse, but this may be new spring grass?
Greens seemed as if they hadn't been cut in a while; Very slow.

If you're in the area, it's fine. Don't drive and expect it to be a resort course, as it is not.

great layout and wonderful holes

I love this course with its huge greens and spectacular layout. Many elevated tee shots and challenging approaches to greens. The course needs more players but unfortunately is out a ways from the maddening crowds. Put in paved cart paths and grow some grass and it could be the two day destination course one knows it was designed to be.

The course needs attention but the staff was great. The pace of play was great. I completed the the course in 2.5 hrs.

The people were great. when I completed my round they asked if I wanted to play again for free so I did. 36 holes for $21 dollars can't beat that.

High Desert Golf Course. Fairways were dry, most of the greens were good. Tee boxes needed work.

The course played average. lots of driving from Green to Tee Box. The tee boxes needed lots of work, rough, and sloped. The fairways were big and wide but dry. Most of the greens were in good shape, a few had holes of sand in them that needed repairs. New sod was put around some of the greens.
The staff were real friendly. The weather was just prefect, since we are in Mesa and the temperature was going to be in the 90's because of the elevation at the golf course the temperature was about 10 degrees cooler.
The price was great because we had a coupon from the Coyote Book, 2 for the price of 1. $30 per couple.
The course would be fun to play again.

Locals playing a sixum using range balls...

Reminded me, somewhat, of one of the Rocky Mountain courses I play back home - lots of topography. Very nice layout which requires the ability to get off the tee (played Yellows - most enjoyable - but not too difficult). One long Par 4 and a short par 5 requiring a strategic tee shot.

Yes, I would play it again
