Payson Golf Club

We are spending a couple of weeks in Payson, AZ, for the first time. As avid golfers, we had to try the local course. It's quite pretty, very walkable, and few sand bunkers. The course is pretty, but not in the best condition due to the summer Monsoon rains and lots of animal tracks (including on some of the greens) and piles of poop everywhere. Nothing the groundskeepers can do about the animals because this is a mountain community built in the animals' natural habitat. We enjoyed our round of golf and will play the course several more times in the coming days.

I’ve played here since 2020 and the course and amenities have significantly Improved. It is still a flat course but fairways and greens improve every year since new ownership. Don’t compare this course to the expensive public courses in Phoenix valley where a round can cost $250. This is just a regular guy/gal course for $60. Some greens will have Elk damage as they seem to fancy walking and scratch up the greens abit. You just have to move ball away from the damage and get on with your round. Pace of play is good especially after 10:00 am when all the early birds are usually done. The Staff is friendly and helpful. Great value for $60.

Poor shape period. Justca farm field made into a golf course. Fairways had splotchy grass, mostly weeds and dirt. Greens were not much better. However if your looking for cheap golf, its not horrible. Golf carts are really old and in poor shape. Sputtering and lurching often.

Being new to this course made it challenging at times. Plus I spend a lot of time in the rough and it is rough off the fairway. Overall a very fun time and good price for the experience.

It was impossible to tell the fairway from the rough. Weeds, crabgrass, etc. were everywhere. A lot of times you were hitting from dirt on the fairways. For this time of year, you would think it would be in better shape. Just not taking care of it.

Guy in the clubhouse was awesome. Polite and professional.

I’ve been playing this golf course for decades, and this is the worst I’ve ever seen it. The practice range has been torn down and they now have two horrible nets for warming up. The fairways and greens are burned from lack of water or spot fertilization without water.

When I asked the staff about the conditions, I was told that the back nine is going to be developed into Condominiums and the front line is going to be renovated in November. It’s a sad day to see the only public golf course in the area in such bad shape.

This course is in terrible shape , and should be a $20 per round course . I was very shocked at how bad the course was in . It’s shameful to call this a golf club .

About the worst course conditions that I have ever seen.

There are no other public course options in Payson, so they have a monopoly. Played 9 holes then left. Deer and elk poop everywhere. Tees, greens and fairways in terrible condition. I will not be coming back. Staff was friendly.

Played here for the first time. The condition of the fairways was decent, but the rough areas had lots of holes and lots of dirt areas. In a place where it is cooler than phoenix, I expected the grass to be luscious. A couple of the greens were also drenched and I was anxious walking on them to not mess them up.

Staff was great, just a old course poor layout. Most holes seem to cross each other balls are coming at you in all directions. Worth about $30 paid $70.

This was a really interesting course for a public course. Very open with some unique and other challenging holes. Greens were in very good condition and fairway was OK. The people there couldn’t have been any friendlier. This is a great course for beginner to above average golfers.

Seemed like no attempt to fix conditions on front nine. Muddy, wet, with no results showing.

The conditions of this course left much to be desired. Just average. And it’s the second time I’ve played there that I booked on golf now and paid for a cart and then was told at the course I need to pay for a card again. So beware of that.

Course had not been irrigated (its winter and temps below freezing). Got a discounted rate as the staff member at the desk said GolfNow was charging too much - a first time ever for this! Friendly staff, not crowded, very dry course, but "greens" were nicely maintained, even though not very green. This course would be awesome when the grass grows in a bit further along in the season. I'd play here again in a heartbeat.

20mph winds and ice in the shade on the back 9. We were one of 2 groups playing 18 that day. I would recommend waiting for Payson the warm up . Third time playing this course and the ball was flying especially with rock hard fairways but don’t expect to land in the green and find the ball.. greens were like ice.

Honestly... This golf course is just way too expensive for the shape it's in. They've stopped using golf now hot deals so.... They will have less than half of the people at the golf course, pro shop, bar and restaurant. They don't have any deals for twilight or low seasons... It just seems like they are going to ride out being mediocre until the course ultimately closes or sells to a developer. Elephant rocks is a course in Williams. A similar price point and the course is emmaculate. Today I took a chunk out of my 56 degree wedge hitting in the middle of the fairway. All of the greens are damaged by elk or divots I have golfed here for 3 years (probably 100 times) and I have never once seen a drink cart come around. The tee boxes are uneven, (even the brand new ones) and some aren't even squared to the fairway. (hole 7). I moved from an area of the northwest where you could play a course like this for $12-$30. Just because you're the only public course in town you think you don't have to try and you can charge whatever you want.... Now that there's no golf now deals... I simply can't afford to golf more than once a month or 6 weeks. I know you might say "yeah who cares that's one guy" I am an active golfer and usually when I've been there my kids and I or if I'm golfing with a friend will get lunch and drinks too.... So now instead of 3-4 times a month with lunch and drinks it'll be once every six weeks byo sandwich and Gatorade. And I guarantee you I'm representative of at least 100 others in town that feel the same way. I really hope you can figure out ways of lowering the cost and bringing more people and more money to the course to improve the fairways, fix the range, and improve overall amenities. Otherwise I think it's just the slow road of mediocrity until it finally goes under.
