River Place is finally established after years of financial problems that were resolved when Tom Kite and Roy Bechtol gave the facility new life with a redesign in the early 1990s. Located on the former Wilding Ranch between Lake Austin and Ranch Road 620, the Hill Country terrain is phenomenal, with a creek that dominates the front nine, and some dramatic slopes that never result in level lies.

The sloping is evident on No. 1, a 402-yard par 4 that requires a testy approach over a ravine from a downhill lie. No. 4 is tough because the creek rolls along the left side of the 561-yard hole before crossing in front of the green. And No. 7 is one of the toughest: a 430-yard doglegger that bends right around the creek.

The back side has a few ponds that come into play, but is void of the pesky creek. The one to watch for is No. 17, a 585-yard monster.

Getting there : From Loop 360, take Ranch Rd 2222 going west.. In about 5 miles you'll come to River Place Blvd. Make a left and look for the entrance on the left side of the street.

Great experience!

Friendly staff. Course was in good condition. Greens were excellent. Pace of play was good. Drink cart came by 3 times in 18 holes and the attendant was pretty and friendly.

This course is very challenging. Bring your A game or plenty of extra balls! An extra tough course for those who have difficulty finding the fairway. Not a long course, but very tight. Several risk-reward opportunities.

The staff offered us a cheat sheet guide to all 18 holes. It was very helpful and dead on reliable. This course has a lot of elevation change, and several blind shots. I use Golfshot App on my iPhone, and the pics are great, but they do not show the elevation changes.

Highly recommend this course. Very beautiful views of the hill country around Austin. This course compares well to Barton Springs, though just a a notch below. I think Falcon Head is similar with it's vast amount of elevation change, but Falcon Head is wider and more forgiving.

Nice course. Poor customer service

River place is a good course with great views of the hill country. Fairways are pretty tight and greens are fast/tricky. Be prepared to lose some golf balls. Had a terrible customer service experience with the pro shop guy. No personality, not friendly and totally screwed up our transaction. I don't know if he was new but we booked through golf now and he couldn't figure out how to split the charges between 2 people. I tried paying for my portion and then he swiped my friend's credit card twice later after I arrived and explained that my transaction had been deleted and had to put the whole charge on my friend's card. After the round we looked at the receipt only to find out that he ended up charging our two rounds, beers, and a sleeve a balls my friend purchased all on my card! We also had a twilight tee time of 5:01 and this guy tried putting us behind 2 groups on hole 10 when the first hole was wide open. Never had an experience like this before at any course. May not come back for a while. Beware of Steve in the pro shop!

New favorite course in Austin

Gorgeous course that plays through the hills. Lots of elevation changes, tiny greens, and ball eating cliffs. Bring your A game.

River Place - first time

Fun course to play and I plan on playing it again.
The course is shorter than the yardage indicates. Many of the holes are downhill with long rolls. Most of the holes have ravines in front - I had to lay up a few times. Its challenging but you can have a good score.

This course needs water stations on the course

Nice course staff in pro shop were not offensive but not the friendliest either. No drink cart or water stations on the course. Greens were very slow and grainy.
Beautiful views and overall pretty course

Still a good, solid country club

Second time playing Riverplace, and it never fails to disappoint. Good layout, well conditioned and helpful staff make this an easy round in Austin if you are not up for some of the better known, higher profile courses.

River Place--Always Worth the Time and Price

The weather was awful; heavy mist to rain with a temperature in the low 50's. The pro shop staff was professional, friendly, informative and genuinely nice about everything. The course is placement oriented and can be quite challenging to most golfers, but it was in great shape. The scenery is awesome and the course remains one of my favorites in Texas. The only thing better than the taste of the food from the grill was the price!

Great Challange for all Golfers

Very friendly staff and great course. Have to be careful off the tee if you like to use your driver. If you miss the fairway big numbers will come. Lots of elevation changes so be prepared to go up or down a few clubs to reach the green.

River Place

Tough layout - canyon golf - not a good enough golfer for this course - don't know how the Texas winter has been but the course was in surprisingly bad shape. Tee boxes were heavily sanded, greens were also rough and sanded. Had heard the course was tough but usually in good shape. Don't know what happened here. Staff was helpful and friendly. Club house was in total disarray.

Hill country golf at its best

River Place is a great course and was a wonderful experience for our group. If you want to experience some serious undulations and spectacular views, try this one. The staff was really nice. You can't hit your driver at the range is about the only complaint I could have about the place.

Great view, challenging course

This is my first time playing here and I would consider it a challenging course with all the hills, trees, valleys and creeks. If you don't want to lose a lot of balls, ask for the cheat sheet from the pro shop to help you have a better game plan. Overall, it's a great course and I would definitely revisit again

Good alternative to Barton Creek

If you're visiting Austin and want to play golf, you probably want to play at Barton Creek, but it's exclusive (you have to be a resort guest or member) and pricy even if you do have the access. That's why I often recommend River Place, located off Hwy 2222 on the way out to Lake Travis to a lot of golfers instead. While it's technically private, they seem to be offering more and more public tee times, and when they do, they are quite a steal, usually in the $50-60 range. The scenery and drama of the Hill Country is on full display and there are some real eye-popping holes. Like most courses in the Hill Country, there are some squirrelly holes, but the trade-off is wonderful scenery and great hole variety. Much recommended.

Other than it being 36 degrees when I played, I loved the course. Can't wait to play it when the weather is nice.

beautiful scenery adventurous cart driving

This course is cut out of the beautiful canyons of Austin... that being said it is both the strength and the weakness of this course .... got out of town guests... 10 handicap or less.... bring m on They will be mesmerized by the scenery and it will ease the pain of great shots careening off the fairway hills into the abyss.. Conditions were minimal... sloppy cart path trimming fuzzy greens.... staff definitely had that nose up country club attitude. Ergonomics of cart area and clubhouse pitiful... not to mention bring your hiking boots for the walk from the parking lot... pre round warm up a joke on this pitiful... don't hit your woods range All in all what a disappointment too much money $ 50.00 even with golf now discount More wannabe country club then the real deal

Always a pleasure

Come from Canada twice a year and I never missed a round at River Place. Staff are always super friendly, you never felt that you're a guest in a private club. Course condition are always pristine and course drained pretty well after heavy rain last night and last week (cart path only though). Mixture of long and very short holes: putted for eagle on 15th, ended with gimme bird! Some elevated greens make club selection and wind guess crucial. Always a pleasure to come back.

Challenging but beautiful course

Great course which requires you to play smart to avoid hitting too far off the course or you will not find your ball. Great condition and excellent views at every hole.

The course has great elevation changes along with great views.

Enjoyed the course very much, you have to place your shots perfectly on most holes. The cheat sheet they gave us for each hole on where to hit was a great help. It was our first time playing this course.

Tight off the tee and beautiful scenery

The course is in excellent shape and is an enjoyable layout. So far the best course I have played since moving to central Texas. The course is set up for conservative target golf off the tee, but most holes also have small landing areas further up the fairway that allow for risk/reward shots with driver. Multiple blind tee shots increase the difficulty of the course. The pro shop offers a print out of tips on how to play each hole, which I found very helpful off the tee. I look forward to going back.
