Golf Advisor: Top Courses in New York (2022 #22)
Reviews
Great day, pace of play was very good. Greens were slick. 3 putt four greens!
Overall enjoyed the day...didn't score well but would play there again...soon!
Banquets venue came first
I have played at Arrowhead years ago on a league and the course was in great shape when the league started, but then the owners began to cater to banquets and the course was not their first priority. Any I showed in poor upkeep and condition. Also booked tee times for 18 holes. When we arrived at the course was told the 9th hole was under construction and not playable. That should have been revealed at time of booking: come to find out the reason it was closed, was a banquet was being conducted. Poor business practice.
Nice course to play for the money
Numerous tee box’s were hard , uneven and not in good condition, full of crab grass . Also greens where not smooth and many ball marks not fixed by inconsiderate golfers.
Disappointed
It’s too bad that this course isn’t maintained appropriately. Irrigation leaks throughout the course. Bunkers were not raked and sand or lack of in some cases. Front nine greens were atrocious. Hundreds of ball marks from what I determined to be from greens being overwatered (dead spots throughout). Not worth the money. Apparently, the two venues on property are the priority and not the course itself.
Painful
5hr round! Two groups of 5 in front of us. No ranger and will have to reconsider playing here again. This was unacceptable!
Slow play
Brutally slow as a few groups ahead of us seemed to be the problem. No ranger to keep things moving along. Course was decent however greens still a long way to go.
Incredible Layout and Great Value, very friendly staff
Incredible layout, very friendly staff. Course Manager Larry very personable and even drove around multiple occasions to ensure enjoyment. Conditions need a slight bit of love (not bad at all, but just need some water and smoother greens). In fairness, were just aerated. Definitely will be back
Fairways, aprons, and Sand traps
Fairways cut well and ball set-up nicely.
Aprons cut to accent greens but not inhibit ball from chasing onto green.
Sand traps were sculpture to inherence hole layout and while sand wasn't PGA grade it was a decent grade and not a construction grade of sand.
It's only Early Spring (May) on Western New York; however, this course exhibiting Early Summer conditions.
Spring play
Course was damp resulting in a necessary carts being restricted to cart path only. As a result, the pace of play was impacted. In addition, as a senior player all that extra walking to and from the cart path was energy draining. Also it was my 1st round of the season, so shot making, at times was really challenging.
The staff was outstanding, cheerful, helpful and service oriented. The course operation manager personally interview us in the parking lot as we were loading our clubs in the car. Later as we were having a end of round beverage in the outdoor patio area, the course operation manager sat an chatted with us and supplied and added beverage for us.
The day at this course was great!
Total Eclipse Golf
Played on an overcast 60 degree day that was set for the Total Eclipse of the Sun. The Eclipse happen on the 16th hole were play was suspended 5 to 6 minutes to take in this natural wonder. ( Very Cool) I was very suprised that the course was 90 Degree Rule. If it were me, I would not, as the conditions were still wet and soggy on the fairways and you can visually see the water and mud come to the surface under the golf cart tires. Plus there was noticable temporary damage and ruts from driving on the course. Otherwise, pace of play was good ( not too many golfers ), the tee boxes were a little chewed up, but the fairways, sand traps and greens were all great. The greens had been aerated recently and were very firm. No divot marks on the greens and I only managed to make two on a round I shot an 84. The Course plays longer when there is no roll on Tee-shots on wet soggy fairways, so I was happy with my play. Friendly staff, nice layout and I look forward to returning soon to play it again. Note: the 9th hole is not a Par 5, while I did not confirm , it appears to have been shorted to make room for a new building. ( I found not the hard way: blowing 50 yards past a concealed green from my well played tee shot) .
