San Pedro Golf Course
About
San Pedro Golf Course is an 18 - hole championship facility located on the banks of the San Pedro River. The golf course winds through the mesquite and along the banks of the San Pedro on the front nine. The back nine travels through four canyon like settings and finishes up with the 457-yard par four split fairway eighteenth hole. The golf course stretches out to 7187 yards from the tips and there are five sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all skill levels.
The surrounding vistas at San Pedro are unmatched by any other golf club in Southeastern Arizona. From various points on the course, the San Pedro River Basin can be seen and this Mark Rathert design stretches along those river banks to the natural canyon like settings with the Dragoon mountain range in the background. The elevation changes and cool crisp air provide a setting that will bring you back for the challenge.
The bentgrass greens will provide slick playing surfaces with some undulations to test your stroke. The key to play on hole # 2 - is to stay clear from the left side, as the San Pedro comes into play early in your round. Your second shot to this 457-yard par four will test your long iron game! The fifth creates a great approach to the green on this par five. The par four sixth requires precision off the tee, as there are two bunkers along the right side with a narrow approach to the green. The seventh is a cute par three that is followed up with a par four and the 558 yard par five ninth that requires two well placed shots as the right hand side is guarded by a pond as you approach the green. The left side approach is definitely your safety valve.
The back nine opens up with a straight away 400 yard par four followed by a 197 par three with a very tricky undulated green that slopes from left to right. Walk away with a three here and be happy. Holes 12 - 16 will offer you both scenery & challenges coupled with a great test of golf. The twelfth is as good a par four that exists. The tee shot leads you into a narrow area that favors the left side, as this is a slight dogleg right. The second shot will let you know if you can thread the needle as the approach is a gem. Once on this bowl shaped green area you will look back and see the beauty that Mark Rathert carved here. The ride to the thirteenth tee brings you to the highest elevation on the course, where the San Pedro River Valley surrounds you - encased by three mountain ranges including Cochises' Stronghold - where that once heralded Indian and his tribe staked their claim. The 605 yard thirteenth will require position to the right center on both your drive and second shot, as you approach to this green. The fourteenth resembles hole # 12 but is a tad longer. The fifteenth hole is a scenic par three with a drop of 50 feet from teeing area to green. The sixteenth and seventeenth give you a slight breather as you approach the finest finishing hole in Southeastern Arizona - the par four split fairway 457 yard eighteenth hole. Water comes into play off the tee as well as on the second shot to this green that is also guarded by a bunker as you approach the apron.
San Pedro is tough but fair with exceptional playing surfaces and a range of tees (5) that will test golfers of all levels. You won't tire at San Pedro - enjoy the scenery and the natural desert like playing conditions that will soon be heralded throughout the area.

Headed in a Better Direction
It's been about a month since I last played San Pedro, and I'm pleased to report that there is noticeable improvement in the condition of the course. Mind you, there's still a long way to go, but there's obviously been plenty of attention given to some of the weaknesses. There are greens that are still infected, perhaps irreparably, but others are much better. A number of the "unforced errors" related to mud and saturation that led to recent frustrations didn't exist today. There are still soggy areas, but it's related more to course design, and frankly, have existed since San Pedro first opened. I must credit the official responsible for course setup (i.e. pin placements, tee boxes) for maximizing playability by steering play towards the better conditioned areas of the course. This was my greatest criticism in recent months.Tee shots were much more comfortable and many of the greens rolled well. For the first time in a while, our group discussions focused more on the positive aspects of the course than its flaws. There remains a lot to be done, and I'm sure the path forward will continue to be long and difficult, but I'm happy that the course is moving in the right direction. Keep it up, fellas! As for myself, and I bet many others in this part of the state, we're rooting for you.
Hello and thank you for your 5-star rating, drooter! We're delighted you enjoyed your round. Please book another round with us soon, and thanks for choosing San Pedro Golf Course!
Improving
Course has been in rough shape but it is apparent to me that there is an effort to improve things. Most greens are putable. Fairways are good. Tee boxes improved. Rough is impossible. It has some really fun holes and a few that are really challenging. I hope they keep up their hard work.

Nice Muni Course
This is a nice municipal course. Friendly staff, reasonably maintained. Need more signage on the cart paths for “first timers”. Overall good experience.

Down Hill
Played this course two years ago. Was in pretty good shape at that time. Now not so good. Tee boxes needed mowing, greens have some kind of fungus. Mowing not needed on the fairways because nothing to mow on several of the fairways. Bunkers have no sand just a dip in the ground with weeds. One hole, fence is caving into the river bed. This course is in sad shape from what it once was. Restrooms at hole # 10 were locked up. Porta potty full of ants on the floor and ceiling a bunch of flying who knows what they were. One redeeming factor was cheap green fees. Sorry, just had to say how it was!

Worth the drive
I make the drive from Tucson to benson to play at San Pedro. In the winter months I pay half the price and play in half the time compared to the courses in Tucson Great staff and great food at their restaurant. It is a joy to play on greens that hold when you hit them.
Hi, Glfngln. Thank you so much for the great review. We are glad you had an incredible time, and we hope to see you again soon! Thanks for choosing San Pedro Golf Course.
Seeing Improvement
Have always liked this course but it really fell into disrepair. Since OB Sports has taken over we are seeing improvement. Fairways were decent and greens are starting to come back to their prior good condition.
Still a lot of standing water in areas but maybe they have some irrigation system problems. Give it time and this course should come back as one we would all like to play.

The course is in bad shape. Pace of play was terrible. At the turn it took one hour and 45 minutes to play 4 holes. Left the course after the 13th hole.

Disappointed
Greens were burned and poor soil conditions. MAJOR mole or goffer issues. Port o cans for rest rooms out on the course.
Just trash.

No Improvement; Getting Worse
I see no improvement since I played here a week ago. In fact, the greens, which were average then, continue to deteriorate. The course was still cart path only due to blanket saturation with no clear strategy. Random mud patches, puddles, bare spots, and foraging-animal damage permeates the playing area. It infringed upon playability more this week than last. For instance, on #2 and #8, the apron was a quagmire, and even marked as ground under repair on 8. Adding insult to injury, both featured front pins placed directly behind the mess making the already poor course conditions even more punitive. These and other examples were, at times, quite frustrating. Not only is damage not being corrected in a timely manner, but sensible ways to maximize playability within existing distressed conditions seem to be overlooked. Based on the course's response, measures are in place to improve things, but I just don't see that effort. I'm not saying that I won't play here again. I do enjoy the peaceful surroundings, but as I said in last week's review, I am concerned about the survival of this former jewel. It's getting harder to remain optimistic.

I Hope San Pedro Makes It
Regardless of conditions, I have always enjoyed playing San Pedro. Its design and setting outside the hustle and bustle of Tucson have made it a personal favorite for many years, but I'm concerned over its future. The peak golf season is here, and unfortunately, San Pedro is not in good condition. Although there has been no rain for a month, it was cart path only today, The fairways have been saturated, and I assume it's intentional. The course was playable and my group enjoyed the round since the weather was perfect and the pace of play was very good for a weekend. However, many discriminating golfers do not appreciate courses with patchy, muddy fairways, or bunkers that are non-existent. Even the greens, which are the premier feature at San Pedro, were far below their usually pristine condition today. An occasional round by my friends and me is not going to provide enough revenue to keep San Pedro afloat unless there's a greater commitment to maintenance. I realize that these issues may be related more to budget than apathy, but someone is going to have to step up and go above and beyond to save the course. San Pedro has rebounded from difficult times more than once over the years. So, I remain optimistic. It would be a shame to see a jewel like this go by the wayside, though.
Hi, tommyphils. We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We understand your frustration with the current course conditions. Please bear with us as we work diligently to make improvements. We hope you'll give us another try in the future.
Not playing there again
Course is in bad shape they have lost the greens too.
Hello, ajngolfer. We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We strive for a 5-star experience, so we welcome your feedback. We work hard to maintain the course for everyone's benefit and just completed a reseeding of the course. This maintenance can take a while to show the benefits but the greens will be healed soon and in pristine condition. Please come back soon! Thank you for visiting San Pedro Golf Course.
Needs help
It has been 2years since I played this course and was disappointed. I saw they added ground pavement to some of the cart paths, they should have spent that time, energy and money on the greens, bunkers, and fairways.
Hi, atsilva51,

Thank you for visiting San Pedro Golf Course. We hope you'll give us another try in the future.
Course in very poor condition.
The course layout is OK. Otherwise, the course leaves much to be desired. From tee to green it is full of weeds which were mowed down however. Greens putt OK but many dry spots and again, weeds. Cart paths are dirt and rock.

New management hs work to do
AS usual, this course needs lots of work. Fortunately, they are under new course management, and the prison workers are back. But the course needs lots of work, and that takes time. Maybe a year from now it will be in better shape.
