Colts Neck Golf Club
About
Colts Neck Golf Club is one of central New Jersey's most popular courses. The diverse course offers everything from Scottish-style bunkers to sparkling lakes. Tall golden fescue rough borders the fairways and the greens are large and undulating. The course is seemingly short at only 6,236 yards but it shouldn't be taken lightly. It's much more challenging than it appears. The layout finishes with two of its toughest holes. The 17th has a tough green fiercely guarded by out-of-bounds and the course saved the most difficult hole for last. This par 3 will test even the most seasoned golfers. In addition to the golf course, Colts Neck also has a 25-station driving range that stays open late. It's a great spot for getting in some practice after work.

Not worth $100
Decent course. Conditions good. Friendly pro shop. Control-freak starter. Pace slow but it’s a Sunday. Biggest problem was tough guy wannabe in twosome ahead of us that drove all the way back from 275 yards away to our tee box and threatened to Beat us up because we hit a tee shot and didn’t notice they were in the woods. Our tee shot was in the middle of the fairway and 20 yards behind them. Typical jersey shore meathead pretend-Mafioso-gangster. Saw some other knuckleheads in the parking lot too. Seems like the clientele for the day. Otherwise place is ok but not worth $100 w/cart
The golf course
Challenging and a good layout , par 3 in between par 5 nice.
They did not charge the advertised price. We booked 4 seniors at $51 and were charged $58 each. Very disappointing. Plus your fee.
Expensive but not worth it.
I’m gonna start by focusing on 5 positives here, then I’ll get to the negatives: 1. This course has a great little practice range. 2. The fairways are in great shape. 3. It is a walkable course. 4. They had water jugs out, and it was cold! 5. The rangers are excellent and the starter reinforced pace of play and any slow golfers (group in front of us) were told to “pick it up” which my group really appreciated.
The negatives: 1. The front desk staff asked me my last name 3 times. I thought they were kidding the 3rd time, I dunno I blame social media for short memories. 2. The ball isn’t playable from the fescue, it’s essentially a lost ball, and the fescue is not cut and extremely abundant. 3. For what this place charges. I’ll just say that the greens are unacceptable. The people I was with used more brutal terms, but I’ll say they were beat up and missing grass in crucial areas, which to me means bad greenskeepers. 4. Maybe I’m picky, but the layout of this course isn’t fun. There’s massive power lines running along 40% of it, which is an eye sore. There’s par 3’s next to busy roads. There’s a 435 yard par 5 (which I had an eagle putt), but this was from the blues?!? There’s overhanging trees into the fairways. I don’t mind a tree, but that’s a nuisance if you hit a fairway and there’s trees hanging over where your ball is. 5. Lastly, I’m gonna just say...if this greens fee was $30, I’d play here and look past a lot of the above. But it’s not $30, it’s not $50, it’s $88. So don’t play here, it’s an overpriced course with crappy greens and power lines everywhere.
Underwhelming course overall
Didn’t think this course was worth the price. There are better courses in the area at this price. The staff was very nice but the round overall was underwhelming. The greens had patches of dead grass and the fairways weren’t really the best. It also is a shorter course than I anticipated.
I probably wouldn’t recommend it but if I needed a last resort I would come back.
A Complete Joke.
Stay away and avoid at all costs. For the price they charge this place is borderline a scam. They need to get off their high horse of having Colts Neck in their name and come back to reality.
The pace of play was awful. The starter and rangers were non existent and were letting random groups in front of us because “they were playing a match”. My group got off the first tee 20 minutes late.
For charging $58, they have some balls coming out to us on hole 12 at 7:25 and telling us we need to have the carts in by 7:45 because they “didn’t want to drive the carts in the dark”. With the atrocious slow play we only played 13 holes...for $58, a complete joke. No one at the front desk, while getting our carts, or the the starter bothered to even mention having the carts in by 7:45. Such a scam and a super unfriendly staff. It’s been 4-5 years since I played there and man, has it gone downhill. I will never go back there again.
If you do decide to make the mistake of wasting your money here, do not book any later than 4:00PM, at the latest, because with the extremely slow play, you will not finish.
Don’t play after 4 o’clock
Terrible course etiquette. This place has really gone down hill. Don’t expect to get in 18 if you book after 4 o’clock even though they charge you $60 for afternoon rounds. You will not finish. They want carts back in at 7:45... in the summer... when it’s light out until 8:45. Never again.
We have to wait every shot after 2nd hole because we cannot tee-off until the group ahead completed the first hole. Finally the ranger showed up on 13 hole and asked my group to speed up. Very bad course management. Waited every shot again started on 14 hole after ranger left. We tee-off 12 min behind our tee-time because the starter added one group ahead of two GN tee-time groups.
Stay Away
Course staff is rude. Also charged a premium cart fee for a solo cart rider during a pandemic. Absolute shameful money grab
Also have no course control. Behind pace constantly.
Avoid at all costs.
Private club conditions at county course
They are doing something right in Monmouth county,NJ. They have i think 5 public county owned couurses and i have been privileged to play and enjoy 4 of them. Price is affordable and conditions are always top notch. Colts Neck was no different and was perfect round on perfect weather June day.
Only question is what is my county doing wrong with tax payer recreation $$ ?
Challenging Greens
If you like a challenge on a nice course, try this one!! Easy to walk and even easier to ride. Greens run between 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 stimp. On a hot summer day might be faster. Played it several times. Always a challenge for a visitor of a member.
Pace of play was terrible. we had a group in front that did not follow simple course etiquette. We did not see a Ranger the entire 18 holes, which could have easily solved this problem.
What could easily have been an under 4 hours round was 4.5 hours with a lot of waiting, while the greens and tees ahead were empty
Please have Rangers on the course throughout the day...….
GREAT COURSE
The only complaint I have it was Temporary greens on every hole! Some of the holes you actually lost 100 yards from the placement of the new greens.
NEW TO GOLF NOW
I was not aware of the temp Greens and Tees on all 18 holes.
Also When I was making the reservation I got a error and was not sure that it was made. so I tried to make another time. I did not realize that my Card was being charged. When I realized my mistake I canceled the other 2 reservations.
I am requesting that Golf Now respecfully refunded the
extra charges to my account.
Not worth the price in the winter season
Booked the tee time under the assumption that “course alert” was something small. Turns out it was temporary tee boxes as well as temporary greens. They started us on hole 3, the green was a circle spray painted on the fairway with multiple divots in it. Multiple “fairway greens” were even airated, but the rest of the fairways were not. The round was $45 per person, which is absurd for the condition of the course. The group in front of us was playing slowly, which caused the guys behind us to constantly tee off landing within feet behind us. Very disappointed with the round.
Staff was polite and off course amenities were closed (wasn’t surprised about that being that it’s winter season).
Do not play this course in the winter, it’s a disaster
I played this course on a Sunday at the end of February, and honestly it’s one of the few rounds in golf I’ve had that was regrettable. Every single green is a “temporary green” and every tee box is a “temporary tee box”. If the entire course is temporary and not real, why even open? Staff was nice, but there was no water or anything open on the course to buy a bottle of water, am I expecting too much? They broke up a par 5 into a par 3 and extremely short par 4, which is just stupid. I want to say I didn’t really even play this course because technically I never saw or felt a single green. Let’s hope like every thing else on this course, it only temporarily sucks.
