River Bend Golf Club
About
River Bend Golf Club combines some of the most unique play in the area with a course designed to provide an exciting golfing experience for players of all levels. Beautiful oak trees and meandering streams give the golf course its character, with elevation changes, multi-tiered greens and challenging areas of forced carry-including water features-and areas of forced lay-up in a links-style course, especially on the front 9. The back 9 is a more traditional golf course. All of this combined with the Texas wind makes River Bend a formidable challenge for even scratch golfers. It's one of the only only true links courses in south Texas. The staff is super and the course is very affordable. River Bend Golf Club has a unique practice facility that features an aqua range with an island green. A large putting green makes the Maverick a super practice area.
Distance: About 33 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio and worth the trip. Take Rt 181 from the Southeast side of San Antonio. Located off the 181 business loop (4th street here in the city), coming north or south off Highway 181. The loop runs north and south, like Highway 181, and runs about 1/2 mile west of it. The course and facilities are located in the Avalon Subdivision.

Beautiful Golf Course
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our round of golf at Riverbend golf course. The staff was extremely friendly, and the golf conditions were excellent!
The 15th hole is the signature hole on the golf course is far as I am concerned. 555 yard par five dogleg left, A very beautiful hole from T to green.
We are looking forward to our next round there again soon.
Riverbend review
I hadn't been to this course in a few years. My previous experience left me a little put off with the staff and the poor course conditions. However, this past trip was almost excellent. The course is under new management, or at least a different staff, and with the exception of the bunkers (which were under repair) it was an extremely enjoyable trip. Glad I went and extremely excited that they are trying to improve the condition of the bunkers and the course overall. I'm already planning to go back next weekend.
Cheers!
Great Course
This course is probably fairly easy for the better golfer. It was in good condition and I would definitely play again. Staff were very friendly and professional.
Bad Shape
This is the worst I have ever seen this course. Green were decent (very slow) everything else sucked. Weeds everywhere, grass clippings all over the fairways, very neglected course. I only paid $140 for 18 holes with a cart and felt dissapointed.
Great course and great staff
Awesome course for the money would recommend to anyone.
Greens in great shape
Overall, the course is in great shape. The greens are excellent. The only problem is that the fairways don't have enough grass. Too many tight lies. It will give you an opportunity to work on your punch shots.
a little out in the country
This course is a little out in the country of San Antonio but to our surprise the course was in pretty good shape. The drive of 40 minuets was worth it and the price was good. the staff was friendly and will go back to play again.
Upgraded
Over the past few years of visiting this course there have been many improvements. Cart paths around Clubhouse and Lew's restaurant are new which ties the driving range and practice green quite nicely. Currently clearing out brush surrounding a few fairways. One of the best kept courses in South Texas. Great bang for the buck!
Well as a member of the course maintenance team on the weekends, we appreciate the review.
Course places a premium on approach shots.
February is tough on courses in Texas. Greens did not disappoint. In fact, greens were great! Fairways good. Sand traps needed some work but playable.
Worth the Drive
The fairways were dormant and wet, but that didn't affect the wonderful round of golf. River Bend was an excellent choice for the day and the layout was fun and challenging at times. The greens were in immaculate shape and the I would definitely return. Only drawback was the friendliness of person checking our group in that morning... he was not the most friendly person I've dealt with and they didn't have any food to buy. Next time I play, I'll take food with me.
The value for this course was well worth the hour drive over to play.
Fun layout, close to South San Antonio
Fairways are mostly wide open, several short par 4s, a couple moderate length. Numerous bunkers but don't cause too much trouble. Greens could have been mowed shorter......were a bit slow. Overall a fun layout and got a good rate on golf now. Would definitely recommend and play again.
Not the same course
I have been playing this course since it opened and I must say it's not the same course that I've played even last year. The guy at the clubhouse wanted me to start my round as soon as I could because there was a "tournament" about to start. I suggest that there be some kind of advisement that a tournament is scheduled for the day, so you can schedule your tee time accordingly. The "tournament" was just a large group, so I eventually caught up to them and the round dramatically slowed down. So I only played 9 holes and went home, even though I payed for 18. The course conditions were not as good as I remember. Knee high weeds and big rocks in the bunkers. Big overgrown weeds overhanging on the cart paths. Won't be going back anytime soon unless I hear course conditions have improved. Very disappointed.
Large greens that are always in great shape.
This is a hidden gem tucked away just south of San Antonio. It is definately worth the half hour drive from downtown.
I see you get a course poor conditions I'm looking to play it in about 5 weeks late September wasn't due to the recent rains over the past month that you said the conditions were poor and doesn't look like they will be getting better I played it back in April and it was in real good shape
