River Bend Golf Club
About
River Bend Golf Club combines some of the most unique play in the area with a course designed to provide an exciting golfing experience for players of all levels. Beautiful oak trees and meandering streams give the golf course its character, with elevation changes, multi-tiered greens and challenging areas of forced carry-including water features-and areas of forced lay-up in a links-style course, especially on the front 9. The back 9 is a more traditional golf course. All of this combined with the Texas wind makes River Bend a formidable challenge for even scratch golfers. It's one of the only only true links courses in south Texas. The staff is super and the course is very affordable. River Bend Golf Club has a unique practice facility that features an aqua range with an island green. A large putting green makes the Maverick a super practice area.
Distance: About 33 miles southeast of downtown San Antonio and worth the trip. Take Rt 181 from the Southeast side of San Antonio. Located off the 181 business loop (4th street here in the city), coming north or south off Highway 181. The loop runs north and south, like Highway 181, and runs about 1/2 mile west of it. The course and facilities are located in the Avalon Subdivision.

Fun layout, close to South San Antonio
Fairways are mostly wide open, several short par 4s, a couple moderate length. Numerous bunkers but don't cause too much trouble. Greens could have been mowed shorter......were a bit slow. Overall a fun layout and got a good rate on golf now. Would definitely recommend and play again.
Not the same course
I have been playing this course since it opened and I must say it's not the same course that I've played even last year. The guy at the clubhouse wanted me to start my round as soon as I could because there was a "tournament" about to start. I suggest that there be some kind of advisement that a tournament is scheduled for the day, so you can schedule your tee time accordingly. The "tournament" was just a large group, so I eventually caught up to them and the round dramatically slowed down. So I only played 9 holes and went home, even though I payed for 18. The course conditions were not as good as I remember. Knee high weeds and big rocks in the bunkers. Big overgrown weeds overhanging on the cart paths. Won't be going back anytime soon unless I hear course conditions have improved. Very disappointed.
Large greens that are always in great shape.
This is a hidden gem tucked away just south of San Antonio. It is definately worth the half hour drive from downtown.
Great small town course
Great small town course. The course was in good shape
Workers on Course
Unforunately most workers on course left flags out, pulled them right before shot and kept cutting grass while I was playing. I had to dodge sprinklers as well.
This has not happened before. Great course. Not sure why they didnt close course...
check this course out.
The course was in great condition, especially the greens. There are some really challenging holes.
Nice track!
Everything about the course is good. Not great but overall very good. The driving range had nothing but weeds. The practice putting greens were lightning fast but the course was putting very slow. The track was interesting but seemed to need more. Will definitely go back
Always enjoy playing this course
This is a very good golf course. Interesting layout with some challenging holes that require precise shots if you want to score. Course is in good condition from tee to green. Friendly staff. The fact that it is located in sort of an isolated place is what I like the most. It is very quiet and relaxing out there all the time.
It's got teeth
Nice layout, greens a bit slow (due to all the recent rain/flooding), well maintained and in great shape overall. Reasonable drive from San Antonio and well worth a visit!
Overrated unless you live nearby
I went because of the high reviews (hour drive). It's not that it's a bad course, just a lot of questionable unkept areas, especially tee boxes, weeds in the middle of the fairway, greens are slow, etc. Will I go back? Doubtful.
Challenging, Fun & Beautiful
The fairways and greens in great shape. This course is definitely not boring. Loved the whole experience. Would definitely recommend.
Great deal
14 bucks couldn't beat the price including cart. Strong winds make it a tough course but it's fun to play
Great value
I really enjoyed playing River Bend. I got a good deal on GolfNow. The drive took me almost an hour from Leon Valley, but it was worth it. The course was in good shape, especially the greens. They are very big and in really nice shape. Some spots in the fairways were a little hard. For the price, this course was a great value. I will be back.
Awesome Course, must play again!
The course is in an ideal condition, fairways and greens are excellent, and staff was amazing!
Really good value
Took advantage of the $10 hot deal to try this course for the first time. The score cards don't have the course mapped, and many tee box distance markers differed from the scorecard. Difficult to judge distance to carry hazards. Greens were all in great shape, no bare spots, but were a little slow. Grass in fairways was sparse in a few areas but generally good. A couple of par 4's were long, made more difficult with tight fairways off the tees. But fairways were hard with lots of roll.
A good day
My wife and I played this course for the first time, we are on vacation from Missouri.. The man behind the counter was very friendly to start our day. We played in 3.5 hours, and the pace was very good. It is in February so the course is dormant but the greens rolled well, and were soft enough to hold shots. It is pretty wide open links style so easy to hit fairways. There are two holes that should be marked as both require a lay up off of the tee. also my Sky Caddie did not register this course. All in all a great time!!
Dry course makes for good 1st round
Course is not particularly tough, as there are not many traps but there are several holes where there are carry shots off the tee. The very dry conditions meant the ball rolls forever. Greens were well watered and in good condition. Great value.
Awsome golf course: .
Great golf course; we had a great time good staff. We will be back soon....
winter conditions
The greens were in great shape for winter conditions.
Open areas with plenty of holes against the wind.
