Golf Advisor: Top Courses in Texas (2014 #10)
Reviews
Course was enjoyable to play.
Greens were sanded and should have been notified of this when booking.
Great layout, needs water, greens need work
Faurways were needing grass and were very dry. Greens were extremely fast but very bumpy as well. Course would be very good if it was in just a little better shape. Very very friendly staff made you feel very welcome.
Difficult and hard to find.
Nice course after you find it. Call for directions first because there are no signs. It is not easy, if you think it's going to be another cow pasture course out in the middle of nowhere you're wrong. It will challenge you. Take plenty of golf balls because you might need them. The course was in good condition considering we are in a draught and there is little watering. They are doing a good job considering the extreme weather. The greens were smooth and putts rolled nicely. It's an hour and a half from my home but I'll go back.
What a shame
Played here three years ago for the first time and was amazed at the hidden gem. However, we have stayed there the last two summers and the course just seems to have gotten much worse. Made our tee time by phone and when we got there they had no record of us. Had to deal with slow disorderly, as in drunk, groups on the course. We finally quit after 12 holes as things were not getting any better. Complained in the golf shop and they obviously could care less. Just laughed and shrugged his shoulders and went back to watching tv.
Had heard they were going bankrupt. From what I saw, not surprised. There are too many other places closer to home than to make the trip again.
Do not recommend.
Beautiful and Well Maintained Course
Very nice course. In great shape. Even in rainy conditions it held up very very well.
Good condition for this time of the year
We had the course to ourselves and played in less than 3 1/2 hours. The course is a great layout.
Fun course with alot challenges.
I will say the place was a little harder to find than I thought originally. It is down a short lane lined with tourist rentals.
Once I found it, I was impressed. The clubhouse was nice, clean and full of cordial staff. The range had good grass and unlimited balls. I love the fact that I checked in and just walked over to a pyramid of balls. I was also pleased that they a good size practice bunker complete with chipping green.
The course was a great challenge. The tips are longer than most courses I have played. The fairways were of normal width but had a good amount of change in height from one place to another. The rough is very rough. I lost a few balls that went into the high grass. Not impossible to find them, but very hard to hit out of. Tons of bunkers that were well placed.
My only two complaints are that the neighbors were a little loud and one group was taking way too long. I can tune out the neighbors, it was a holiday weekend and a bunch of drunk toobers were staying in some of the houses near by.
All around a great course.
Nice course, fair and challenging.
Pro Shop & Clubhouse
The golf ccourse is located only 2 ½ miles from the Frio River where I was vacationing in a Concan (Seven Bluffs) cabin. The price was a good draw at $42 through www.golfnow.com. The Pro shop was adequately stocked and the personnel very friendly. Range balls were included in the price as well as complimentary tees. As I approached the driving range, I noticed a row of golf ball pyramids. The last time that I saw that was at a pro tournament! The range grass was not bad and there were enough greens and targets to simulate many course obstacles. There were several practice greens for putting, chipping and bunker practice. The practice putting green had quite a few scorched areas and that made me wonder about the greens on the course.
The Course
It would be good to know about what length of a course you are comfortable playing. The shortest set of tees are “The Baby Falls” at 5187 yards and the longest set of tees called “The Wall” at 7333 yards. I am a 7 handicap and my average (well struck) drive is approximately 250 yards. I chose the tees next to the back named “The Falls” which measured at 6798 yards. I had no problem getting to any fairway if I hit a decent drive. The fairways were well kept and the turf healthy. I found the course greens in great shape. I found only a couple of scorched spots on the course which is evidence of the punishing Texas heat. I tip my golf hat to the greens keeper. The holes were cut well away from any problem areas and did not affect play. The greens overall were in very good condition. As far as the speed is concerned, my perceptive judgement that they were medium slow. I think that is one of the reasons that they were so healthy. If they were mowed down too short, the heat would have probably damaged them. The course has a good mixture of wide open fairways, tight shots and must carries. Nearly missing the fairway is not bad but the consequences dramatically raise if you’re far off the mark. It was a good test for me and the course was very fair to my level of play. The bunkers were actually fun to play out of. They had interesting shapes, plenty of sand and some very deep. The whole course is surrounded by the beautiful Texas Hill Country. There were no nearby homes so thankfully no backyards to avoid. Overall, I had fun playing this course and I would definitely play it again and recommend it to my friends!
19th Hole
I talked my wife into trying out the course grill and I had visions of a greasy burger and fries. We were pleasantly surprised when our burgers were served on delicious sourdough buns with fantastic French fries!!! Even the tea and lemonade were on the house! We elected to eat outside in the patio area which was surrounded by a meandering stream complete with a mini waterfall. It was a very pleasant atmosphere and a good way to end a great day at the course.
Workers were rude
We booked on golf now and was told our price included breakfast, but was told no once we got to the course. The course its self is pretty nice with great views, but the people that work there are horrible, twice while we were on tee boxes we had grounds people drive around and past us while we were teeing off running very loud gas powered vechicles. Every course I have ever played the grounds people have always stopped their vehicles and waited for you to tee off, but not this one the guy just kept driving while we were teeing off. We did try to hit him with our drive but were unsuccessful. I would be weary of recommending this course, except its the only one to play in the area.
"Quiet" golf course in Frio River Valley. Good value for price.
I've played ConCan since it opened and it is really a great layout. From the next to back tees it can be a good challenge not to mention the back tees. The course could be in better shape but for the price it is a good value. The greens are rather spongy and this is my biggest complaint. I noticed the first time I played the course that if there are no people or kids playing in the few houses on the course, it is the most quiet golf course I've ever played. There are many beautiful views of the surrounding "mountains".
This course is in great need of attention. The greens were in horrible condition.
Course layout was nice. This was my third time to play there but I will not go again. If I had not gotten the great deal off your site I would of been fuming if I had to pay $55 to play that course. No excuse for the greens being in such ragged condition. Putts would bounce and break numerous directions regardless of length. I can see why they don't get alot of play.
Great views, long as you want it, up and down terrain, not flat, hard and easy holes.
Good change from flat terrain of South Texas. Wide fairways for driving, but hazards in the right places. Greens are very challenging. Not real crowded and staff is very nice.
Cons: greens are undulated, fairly fast, but bumpy. Slow puts will bump off line. Smooth out the greens.
Course secret: Allways know where the tower is on your puts.
Great course. Just dry
Loved playing this course. Value was excellent. Staff was wonderful. The drive out was beautiful. Excellent blend of types of shots required. This course would be pristine if it had more moisture.
Looking fwd to the next round.
This was an extremely challenging course.
This was a very difficult course. Even the best golfers lost a few balls. The par 3s are unique and very difficult. The par 5s offer some good birdie opportunities if you are willing to go for some risk and reward shots. One of the nice things about this course is that the groups were spaced apart by about 15 minutes. It allowed you to play at your own pace without being caught from behind or catching those in front of you. Very beautiful and scenic as well. I highly recommend it.
This course is a must play for the avid golfer !!
Friendly staff; nice facilities (Grille, Pro Shop, Driving Range); nice course - wide fairways - challenging - beautiful hill-country scenery. A tad brown around the edges (mainly due to no Texas rain in about 20 years). All in all, wonderful experience, and very much worth the historic drive from San Antonio thru Castroville, Hondo, Uvalde, Sabinal, Utopia, on into Con Can along the Frio River.
Had a great time and will play again during my next visit!
Great staff. Good restaurant enjoyed lunch during our visit. Practice ranges were well maintained and in good condition. Had a good time course was in good condition, clean, well maintained. Thanks for a nice experience.
I love the layout.
This course has great potential. It is a great layout in a beautiful location. The only problem is, right now, the course conditions were terrible. Fairways hard as a rock. Greens not much better. This, however is due to weather conditions and I hope will be temporary. I do plan to come back this summer when the course should be in better shape.
Fun Course, could use a Marshall to speed play up.
Overall the course was great. Not much room for error so if you're a novice player like myself, bring plenty of balls. Play could have easily been sped up if a marshal had been present. Fun course overall and I'll definitely go back.
not worth the monies
It was a nice layout with long par 4's. The greens were in bad shape. The snack bar was not as friendly as the pro shop.
This course was more challenging that I assumed it would be for a course out in the country.
Course knowledge is essential to play this course well. There are some greens that have interesting breaks as well as some fairway shot that are blind. The course was in great shape for this late in the season. I would recommend it to anyone.
