Oak Hurst Golf Course

About
In 1993, Carlton Gipson designed the highly acclaimed Oak Hurst Course, which has hosted numerous professional tournaments over the years. The Dallas Morning News has featured the course in their “Diamonds in the Rough” pieces about outstanding rural Texas courses.
Gipson’s design is unique in that every hole appears different, requiring all sorts of shots and the use of every club in the bag. Oak Hurst is also well known for its large, well-bunkered, undulating greens and water that comes into play on over half of the holes.
The number-one-rated hole is No. 10, a challenging 595-yard par 5 that welcomes golfers who’ve allowed their concentration to wane at the turn. However, the most-talked-about hole is the par 4 16th, which plays around 400 yards and has been rated by the East Texas pros as the most difficult in the region.

Steady decline
The reason is due to poor course conditions and overall lack of care for the course. It seems the greens keepers are just lawn care people that are scalping areas, mowing over stakes and leaving the shrapnel all over. The ants are everywhere. The tee boxes are not moved appropriately to prevent overuse. The holes are not neatly cut and burnt. Just overall unhappy with where the course has gone over the last year.
Surprisingly not bad
I am honestly surprised at the ratings. I played during the week so I can't speak for pace of play. But for the price I paid there was only one botched green that I noticed. Driving range and clubhouse is nothing special. But staff is very nice. Rolling etx hills were a nice challenge. Tee boxes were just fine. Got nothing to complain besides the greens and hard rock "sand traps". Fairways are taken care of and the greens are a bit slow.
Do Not Recommend
Out of 6 courses ive played in East Texas this course has really gone downhill......The greens are the worst, grainy, grassy, cut uneven and too long.....The fairway is cut ok, but the rough just off the first cut is 5 inches deep and will lose balls and time looking for your ball.......The pro at the front desk could also take a Dale Carnegie course that might improve his attitude!

Pretty nice for the price.
Pretty nice course (being that it is public and not very expensive), its the main course I play because Im a college student and low on money and the other courses around Tyler are private and cost more. Peach tree golf club has two 18 hole courses (Peach tree and Oak hurst) and Oak Hurst this is the better/higher maintained (and more expensive) of the two. I practice at the driving range/putting green/chipping green about every other day (a bucket of balls is $5) It has my recomendation.
