Poor course management
The Marshes is a very challenging course and is picturesque. Some holes almost go overboard with split fairways and hazards that make the course less enjoyable for average golfers. We golfed in a foursome and were overtaken by 3 sets of 2 golfers and 3 singles. We were well within the recommended playing time as posted along the course, but with that number of singles and doubles pushing from behind it really took away from our enjoyment of the round. We felt this was very poor course time management and a distraction. They were also watering many holes on timers and this held us up on 3 holes and we skipped one entirely. This in a day when they were calling for rain all afternoon and evening (which it did). Overall these two issues led us to rate our overall experience as less than great...
Treat to Play
Course was in excellent shape. Staff was courteous and helpful. Second hole is a monster perhaps too long for the average golfer to dream of paring. Would like to see yardages at tee boxes along with hole layouts to determine which way some holes turn. More yardage markers in fairways would be very helpful, not everyone owns a golf GPS. Overall a real treat but a challenge to play.
Great course with a one key shortfall
I have played this course twice and both times was blown away by the condition of the course and the courtesy of the staff. The first time we played the course there were GPS units built-in to the carts. This time they had been removed. This would be fine but the holes don't have individual overhead pictures of the hole layout at the tees. The score card doesn't have an aerial view of the course layout either. This leads to some guessing about distances to hazards and what might be beyond the dog legs. Lucky I had my iPhone with a GPS app but my playing partners didn't have their own.
Wet Fairways
I had heard a lot about this course and was very excited to finally play it. The only disappointing thing about the course was that drainage for the fairways was absent. Many times my shoes were squishing water and relief was nowhere to be found. The course played fair but you had to have a very accurate driver, many second shots were easier then the tee shot and they had water in play. Par 5's with the wet conditions were pars at best not allowing me to make up strokes on these holes.
Great course!
Really enjoyed this one. Great variety, good length, fairways and greens immaculate. Even though the greens were punched recently, they rolled true and quite smooth. VERY fast greens, although it's been very dry lately. Excellent staff.
fantastic round
First time at the Marshes and it was a great experience. I've probably played around 25 courses and can easily say this was the first time I was taken aback by the service and how friendly the starter/ backshop/ cart girl. The course itself was very nice with the only downside being the recently aerated greens. I will be waiting a little bit for them to recover and do everything I can to get back there a few more times this year
Always fun playing Marshes
Marshes is known as the last Robert Trent Jones Sr. signature design, I've played the course several times and find it challenging and really like the layout. Course was in great shape, as always. Pace of play was great. I wouldn't pay full price since it is much more than other courses in the region, but when deals bring it in line with other top notch area courses, Marshes is as the top of my list along with eQuinelle and Stonebridge.
Can I get my yardage?
This course used to be a gem, but has lost some of it's lustre when it got rid of its in-cart GPS and replaced it with nothing. There are no tee-side signs, no tee bricks, no sprinkler heads markers...literally nothing but a few of the base markers to give you a sense as to how far you are. I get that with technology people can get some assistance, but if you are leaving it 100% on the individual, then create an app or offer free wifi. I would never, ever pay full pop to play this course again.
Wonderful experience
The course is challenging yet fair. The course conditions were excellent and the pace of play was very good. Will definately go back. A must play course if you're in Ottawa.
Good course
This is a good course, but for the rate usually charged, the greens should be much better. It looked like they had been aerated within the last few weeks, so maybe they will improve as the summer goes on. I`ve played courses in Ottawa this year that charge less than half of what this course charges, with much better greens.
Beautiful Course
Awesome course, and gives you a run for your money. Greens & fairways are very well kept but don't think they are going to be easy. The marsh areas (many) can catch you off guard if you tend to wander a bit from the fairways. Make sure you take some extra balls.....you may just need them. Didn't have a great score but it was a lot of fun just the same :)
First Round at The Marshes
Had a nice round at The Marshes yesterday with my son, for his birthday.
Conditions were good, although the greens were terribly inconsistent and nearly impossible to judge from hole to hole.
They did not have any information to provide us with regarding the course layout, which was disappointing. As well, there was a group of teenagers ahead of us who were golfing for the first time and did not know about course etiquette. Never saw the beverage person on the course except for hole #1.
Aside from these items, we had a lot of fun and had our round at a great price.
As a side note, never saw the GPS carts that I had heard about?
Great way to celebrate graduation day
The course was in great shape. I like the challenge of this course. Had a great time playing. Our group of two Finished in less than 4 hours.
Soft drinks from the refreshment cart were a little expensive.
horrible greens
Greens were punched but nobody mentioned it. Completely unusable which detracted from an otherwise fine facility.
Very nice course, Great Condition, Very Penalizing
Love playing at the Marshes especially for the GolfNow rate. Got stuck behind a slower 4 some which slowed our round down a bit. I find the Marshes to be a very difficult course with A LOT of ways to end up in the water. Make sure your game is on before going out. Free range balls which is always appreciate, course with in excellent condition, with huge greens that we rolling very well.
Couple things that could have been better, most notably the beer selection on the cart. Bud, Bud Light and Michelob is the worst I've come across. You think a premium golf course could manage a single premium beer haha.
Nice course!
Greens need more time, some are quite sparse.
Sand rakes in cart not a good idea, have rakes by
bunkers like almost every other course.
Staff friendly, pro shop well stocked.
Green needs a little TLC
The course was in great condition except the greens . I found them in poor condition . Lots of yellow spots and very bumpy .
Challenging and interesting course
Every hole was different and offered different challenges. As well as hitting the ball straight and long you had to decide which side of the bunker or water you wanted to be. For me, several layups were required. It was a windy day, so the greater the challenge. Some greens were narrow and deep, others were wide and shallow. You need to play the Marshes several times to put in a good score. There was some winter kill on the fairways and the greens, but on the hole the course was in good shape.
Bad day
The greens were not very good. The pace was slow and never saw a marshal but saw beverage girl 5 times in round.
Course Opening
For the opening of the course, it was in good condition. Was disappointed in the price considering the greens were punched and very slow. For the conditions of the course, I would have thought that they would have given a bigger discount.
