Dogwood 9
Played a twilight round on Dogwood. Course was in really good shape but was a bit backed up for a Tuesday evening. If they keep course conditions up through the heat of the summer I’ll be pleased.
Greens and bunkers made the round less than ideal
Greens had recently been punched. Unlike most courses Forest Park doesn't seem to sand them down afterwards so the ball bounces all over the place. It's like playing a game of plinko. While I understand Greens need to be aerated there are ways to mitigate the impact for players. Bunkers were hard like concrete and many had standing water in them from the rain the day before. The course is fun though and it's located in a neat spot. I'll be back!
Classic golf course in the heart of the city of St. Louis.
Yes, its noisy, especially on a Saturday morning with plenty of sun. It was a windy day and temps in the high 50's, The course is a classic and never easy. I enjoyed it even though my score of 97. Great to get out on 4/20/24!!
Recently Aerated, Overpriced & Conditioning Not The Best
We played the Redbud/Dogwood nines, which are the two nines you want to play. The course gets a lot of play and is a decent course.
I thought the price of $50 was too high for early April, considering the course was recently aerated. I played Far Oaks a couple days earlier this week and it is a much better course. Has better design, conditioning and cost less than $50.
I thought the conditioning had slipped some. Several tees not in good shape. Most of the fairways were decent but there were some bad spots.
The tree by the green on hole #8 on Redbud needs to be trimmed. When pin is on the left, your approach shot will hit the tree limbs.
Pace of Play
Took us 5 and a half hours to play 18. We could see multiple groups in front of us waiting too so it wasn’t a problem with just one slow group but a problem with the course overbooking. Greens were pretty bumpy from aeration too. This round was my yearly reminder why I rarely play here.
Excellent course!
One of the best courses I’ve played so far. I’m still a beginner with a high handicap and was nervous about playing here. The staff was friendly, the course was beautiful and not too difficult, but also not too easy. Location is ideal. 10/10 experience
Winter Golf Fun
First group off on this cold morning. 15 minute wait for frost to dissipate. Course conditions were fine. Some bunkers were unraked. Winter tees are set, but it would be nice to set tees for the women's tees too. Fun, interesting course. Lots of history and old world design elements.
Early Bird Gets the 3 Hour Round!
We got to the course twenty minutes before our tee time. At five minutes before tee time, pro shop finally opened. Somebody missed their alarm? We were the first group on the course. Played in three hours flat. Course is in pretty good shape. Greens are still bumpy from being pin punched a few weeks ago. Bunkers need raking. Great day for early December. Fun layout that is scenic but not overly difficult.
Family foursome
Played with 3 of my family. We had a great round of golf. Course was in good shape - hard and fast. Staff was helpful and friendly. Course is scenic with lots of elevation changes. Lots of old school touches from the past with newer architectural changes. Course gets a lot of play - greens had just been punched and hadn't been topdressed with sand so putting was an adventure! Overall- very playable trending to the "easy" as evidenced by the Course rating.
Always Exceeds Your Expectations
I played the Dogwood/Redbud courses. I like these 2 nines the best because of the different type of holes. The Hawthorne nine is completely flat.
For a city municipal course that gets plenty of play, this course always exceeds your expectations. They hold numerous tournaments at this course and they have the planning/administration of tournaments down to a science.
I noticed they cut some of the vegetation in front of the tee boxes to open up the beauty of the holes. Well done.
