McLean Golf Association

About
McLean’s course is pasture golf at its finest, and the last sand greens in Texas. No clubhouse. No green fees. Sloping farmland and fairways mowed 50 yards wide through a wheat field. The good Lord waters the fairways and the greens have to be rotor-tilled to keep the sand loose. Most days the wind blows 10-15 mph with gusts up to 25 MPH; however, it’s blown as much as 60 mph so it’s nice that the holes are short.
The facility has experimented with a few innovations in recent years. For example, the greens have a strip of outdoor carpet to putt on. At the pin there’s a string to measure the ball around to the carpet. Also on the 9th hole they’ve installed a grass green that’s cut with a regular mower.
The locals use their own carts, but we highly recommend that you soak up the unique atmosphere by walking the course. On the 1st and 5th holes there are two co-ed outhouses, and one water faucet on the 1st hole.
Getting there : 80 miles east of Amarillo on the north edge of town. From I-40 take Hwy. 273 south and the course is less than a mile away.
