San Saba River Golf Course

About
Carved out of pecan orchard, San Saba River Golf Course is one you don't want to miss when you're within reasonable distance of this quaint little town. More than 600 pecan trees dominate the landscape, helping the course produce more than 30,000 pounds of pecans each year. Unlike other small-town courses, there is nothing easy about a golf round at San Saba. The front nine, built in 1972, is really tight, and anything that strays from the fairway will require imaginative recovery shots from the pecan trees. Most of the par 4s are close to 400 yards, the par 3s play over 170, and the two par 5s are extremely long, including no. 9, which goes 625 yards from the back. San Saba River's back nine, added in 1987, isn't as squeezed by the pecans, but has more water hazards that impact play. This side also has two long par 5s, but there are a few solid birdie chances, especially the 152-yard, par-3 13th.

San Saba Fun!
Great old time course. All kinds of shots needed. Relaxed pace.
Pleasant Surprise
While this was a little hike but worth the trip. Although I found the trees a little tight on the back nine but still a fun play. The 18th is all any player could want in a finishing hole - big water carry on 2nd or 3rd shot... Don't missing going into town and dine at Pepperbelly TexMex Diner...
Great greens and challenging course
Nice course and the greens were in great shape. Worth the drive from Waco.
Fun Course
The back 9 was the original course. Beautiful trees and the river runs through the back 9. Make sure you hit it straight. Very pretty and challenging as well. Front 9 is wide open and with the excepton of a couple of holes it is fairly easy. Definately a fun course worth playing at least a couple of times.
A Hidden Gem
I first played this course in the 1980's and have played it 1-4 times a year since - it's an 80 mile drive one way. April 2014 was my first play since the summer of 2013. It has had its UPS and DOWNS, but right now, it is UP. New PGA Pro, Chuck Jennings seems to have the place humming along, neat, tidy, trimmed and green. The many trees have been pruned nicely. Sand bunkers have largely, if not entirely, been replaced with rough-like grass. For my game, that is a big help. The sand bunkers there were always hard and bare. There was a High School Tourney practice round going on with teams from all over when we played last week, but Chuck put our twosome out on time so we could finish in 4 hours. We would have loved to stay for 9 more, but had to drive home to Georgetown. San Saba is a very nice, friendly little town, however, it's not on the way to anywhere so you must go there on purpose. I love to go there and always have - even when it was in lesser condition than now. In summary, I doubt you will find a better 18 hole layout anywhere for the same green fee. It is a real bargain. Two completely different 9's - the old original thru the Pecan River Bottom and the newer 9 out in the mostly open plain. (Please don't tell anyone so it won't get crowded)
GREAT COURSE
Great staff and great course you can't go wrong playing here!
Not bad for this time of year.
I thought it was fairly decent for the price and time of year. Not to challenging. Some water. Alot of trees. Greens were fair. No sand.
Friendly small town course
Played SSGC again this past week and enjoyed the experience. All Hill Country courses struggle some in August keeping green but SSGC has done well keeping things playable. Pecan trees are dropping nuts everywhere so hurry before the leaves fall or finding balls will be an issue. Will come back for sure.
Tough from back tees, lot of trees
Nice course...Greens smaller and slower than most, but smooth. Areas around greens are well maintained. No bunkers, but instead grass circles (rough) near greens. Tee boxes are normal. Looks like there were fairways at one time, but now they are like hitting off of mown grass at your local park. Ball will not get any roll. Lots of tall trees (for Texas) with small windows to hit and have to hit your spots or trees will get in the way on approaches.
This course is challenging because of numerous pecan trees. I had trouble staying out of them.
The course was in good shape. Greens were a little slow. Overall, I would recommend this course. For the price and condition of the course, I have found few courses in small towns that I would give 4 stars.
Greens are super slow and fairways need work.
Course layout a little confusing if you haven't played the course. Fairways felt like you we're playing from the rough. Slowest greens I've ever played (30 yrs of playing golf).
Great Course, SLOW Play
This is a nice course with plenty of trees and water to contend with. However, there were two groups of six players (probably locals) and they wouldn't let us through so we had to jump them and skip holes. Our round would have taken close to 6 hours if we didn't skip. We complained in clubhouse after we finished and they didn't seem too concerned. Otherwise, really enjoyed it and definitely worth the drive from the Ft. Hood area.
