Player at Lyman Orchards Golf Club
About
Lyman Orchards is a popular Connecticut destination most known for the nearly 100 varieties of pick-your-own fruit but it also offers two championship 18-hole golf courses and a nine-hole course. One of the longer courses was designed by Gary Player and the other by Robert Trent Jones. Lyman Orchards' Player Course is a seemingly mild 6,600 yards from the tips but don't let the yardage fool you, this layout is a tough but fair test. There are over 30 bunkers strategically placed along the small greens and deciduous trees and beautiful white pines line the fairways. Routed through the orchards across gently rolling hills, the golf course is as scenic as it is challenging. The terrain provides the course with plenty of ups and downs, as well as great views, especially on the 11th and 13th holes.

Three may not be a hard hole when you keep the ball in play, but otherwise it is unsympathetic to missed shots. It’s the #3 index here. Photo submitted by AptlyLinked on 08/23/2025

Player course
Course was in great shape. This course has a lot of blind shots, if you don't have local knowledge it is very hard to navigate the course. Will be back to play the Jones side.
Quirky Course
A little unforgiving, many holes with lateral hazards along one or both sides of fairways and greens. Heavy woods and brush. Very severe elevation changes which make for some beautiful views at the high points but also create many blind tee shots and blind shots into greens. Overall I would play another course first before I came back.
First timer
First Time out on the course, course in great shape. I booked my Tee times on Golf now app, so I received a great deal. Enjoyed my round, play was a little slow.
Will return to play again, great views.
Pace of play issues
I have always loved playing at Lyman but have never seen pace of play issues like I saw this time. The front nine took 3 hours and the back 2 hours. Starting on the 4th hole and continuing through 9, there were 3 groups on every tee, resulting in a 10 minute wait each time. I finally called the clubhouse in frustration to see if they could correct the issue. If someone did come out they never spoke to me. The only change in the pace of play resulted from 3 groups dropping out between 8 and 14. I play every Friday all over the state and it is pretty rare to have a round over 4 hours these days, let alone a 5 hour round. It is doubtful that I would play here again.
Wet times good times
We arrived at Lyman yesterday morning after they just got an inch and a half of rain. The staff was nice and friendly as always. They asked us if we needed anything and advised us that the bar was open.
The course was a little water logged but it honestly wasn't in bad shape considering. The greens were running true and kinda fast...hard to believe. This goes to show how well the Player course was designed.
We were a little bummed that there wasn't a cart girl with beverages...but again it had just down poured.
One thing I have always wished they would do is put more yardage markers on the tee boxes. It would just help a bit.
After we got done we went inside for some food. We waited about 5 minutes for a waitress to come over and realized that wasn't going to happen. We went to the bar and ordered our food and drinks and they came out in a respectable amount of time. Very good food, none of us had any complaints.
Even though it was a wet day, we all had a great time and will be back.
Ps. Why was the player course $49 with cart on golfnow and the Jones course was $69?? None of us liked that...
Must Play
I never reveiw a course but for some reason I feel compelled to write something about Lyman Orchards. I have to admit, looking at reviews, I wasn't thrilled to play this course. I was nervous about course conditions. I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. I heard the rough complaints, the course must have heard them too, because it was lush and green and fun to play out of. The greens were rolling great, and the fairways were fantastic! I did hit into one bunker and there wasn't a ton of sand, but the other two I hit out of were great. I saw a maintenance worker with a load of sand driving by so I think they must be adding sand. Pace of play was great, and the weather was perfect so it was a truly enjoyable day. Ask for a course map, it was a lifesaver and I found it great that they had such a detailed map for free. Staff was very courteous and helpful to me being a first time player.
I'll be back and can't wait to play the Jones Course.
Broccoli Greens
This is the first time for me on this course, and I called the pro shop before booking the tee time, they said the fairways were in pretty good shape and the greens we in very good shape
boy were they BS-ing me
the fairways were indeed fine, but the greens were like putting on Broccoli , every one of them!
nothing rolled true, it doesn't look like they pressed the greens at all this year.
I liked the lay-out of the course but the putting greens are in such bad shape they should close the course and find a grounds grew that can fix them. if you are going to paly there make sure you wait till June, maybe then it will be fixed
Needs maintenance
Challenging "Gary Player" Course, lost 12 balls, but mostly because we could not find them in the thick rough! Cart paths need major work. Dont go left or right, you will lose your ball to the woods, not much room off the fairway on 80% of the holes. Nice scenery through the orchards.
Course conditions
Rough was 8" deep and impossible to find your ball. Needed to be cut. Sand traps were like concert with 4" boulders. Couldn't play ball from traps. Course needs to be worked on!
Greens were terrible
Did 18 on the Player course. Fairways were in good shape but the greens were recently air-rated so everything was bumpy. I would wait a couple weeks before returning.
Par Experience
The EZLinks booking system went down over the weekend, however the staff were very friendly and able to accommodate us and get us out without any delays. Course conditions made the round a lot more challenging that already anticipated. The aerated greens caused for putts to roll unevenly and loose grass clippings along the rough made errant tee/approach shots difficult to find. If they tidied up the course just a bit more, I would gladly return.
Rough day
I underestimated how wet the course would be. Rough was thick and wet. Greens were aerated. cart path only. Wish I knew in advance.
player course
the course was in nice shape, they seemed to b growing out the rough, which made the course tougher. greens were recently aerated which made for bumpy putts, still early in the season. finished up the round in 3:10, never waited on a shot. the day was overcast which I believed kept people away. cold beers at the end of the round hit the spot. nice day
