This course doesn't use Golf Now so there's very few reviews here. And it's rated kind of low because they ARE sticklers for slow play and some people want to take all day. This is NOT the course to take your kid/girlfriend who has gone to the range once. The par 3 course is 15 minutes south on the sound.
I've seen so many reviews that complain about 6 hour rounds and "where are the rangers?" Well, Smith gives each group a card that tells you what time you need to be at each hole. If you play average to quick it won't be a problem but I for one LOVE that they are keeping people on track.
The front is a little shorter and tighter. The back is a little longer but more wide open and much more elevation changes. You'll use every club in the bag , the greens are undulated and quick without being unfair. I just moved to Fairfield actually and am SO glad that my town course is this good. I've been playing once a week since I moved two weeks ago and the only course I've played so far better than Smith is Sterling Farms. Definitely check this course out.
never going back
Was playing late Sat afternoon (4:56pm on receipt) as a single. Played 4 holes on front 9 then moved to back to find open holes as hit a logjam, but made sure i wasn't cutting in front of anyone. Was playing first back 9 hole and had dropped a second ball when someone driving by stops to yell that there's "no practicing on the course--the practice facility is by the clubhouse". I go ahead and hit the second ball which must have offended Barney Fife who evidently called the pro shop. They must have nothing better to do at roughly 6pm so they sent ranger rick out to tell me that it was against course policy to play 9 holes between front & back 9's (he must have known there should not have been any singles on the back 9 at that time--good sleuthing). Rick would not budge an inch and said it was course "policy" that prevented me from playing another hole on back 9. Only option was to quit or walk back to front 9. I quit and will never be back. Side note--website and receipt note "9 hole" rate...not front or back 9. 2nd side note--checked HSR policy on website and no explicit mention of playing front or back 9 only. I realize it's implied that you'll play 9 consecutive holes on either 9, but no where does it state you can't mix. Note to staff--this is an average muny course...you're not working at Bethpage or some private club so please lose the attitude. Note to others--you've been warned.
"Smith" is a solid course but needs help with pace of play
I've played this course close to 100 times. I grew up playing on this course and recently played it on a trip back north. It's a wonderful old course layout with great contours and tons of elevation change. I definitely recommend this course for any skill level player. Playing early allows for a close-to-adequate pace of play. As the day goes on a 5-hour round is common. Fairfield residents get the best deal.
The driving range is situated on the other side of the facility - if you want to warm up, come early.
After round food is always top shelf.
