Wheeler Black - Good but no GPS
Always an easy course to book and good value. , Red is easier to book vs Black. Carts have GPS monitors but DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY YARDAGE INFO FOR HOLES. Also, Carts shut down if you deviate too far from ‘geo-fence’ and super annoying.
avoid the wheel
I’ve been playing the wheel for years, and it’s gone completely down hill. Yesterday we played a 6.2 hour round.
It started with no “starter” being present. I went in the pro shop and found the starter, a younger woman, scrolling tiktok with the other two teenagers that run the cash register. i was there 1.5 hours early, she never once came outside, or started anyone. Everyone was confused when they were allowed to tee off so people began taking matters into their own hands including and not limited to fighting over golf cart access.
Our tee time was 1130, at 11:10 an 8 some went off (my first time seeing an 8 some on a public course). Followed by 1115 a two man group, then our foursome at 1130. I called the proshop twice and they said a ranger would come out. Spoiler alert, after 6.2 hours not one ranger was seen
After the round I called the pro shop and tried to speak to the superintendent and head pro, neither of which were at the course on a sunday. I left messages and never got a call back, including calling again today.
The tee boxes are an absolute disaster on top of this terrible management of the pace of play, so please do yourself a favor and avoid whatever is happening here. I hope the town steps in, as i sent the same review to the board that manages the course.
Pleasant Course
Typical Muni Daily Fee. Course looks good, but the Tees and Greens were only Fair Condition, possibly due to the Extreme Heat. Tees were like playing out of the rough and Greens were slow. overall pace of play was a little slow. Fair Value.
long trip
Getting there was the biggest problem the Merritt Parkway was a parking lot in several places. Even worse coming home. Staff was friendly and helpful. Course layout was interesting with challenging par threes and fives. Tees were worn and small. Fairways deceptive and the greens were in good shape. Worth the trip to play and the cost was budget friendly.
Meh
Poorly managed. A bit better than a dog track but nothing special and not worth the inflated “out of town” fees.
It was the best of times it was the worst...
The front nine was in terrible shape...lots of rain recently...5 groups on the difficult 7th hole...the back nine was lovely and a quicker pace of play. Lots of golf campers...just a busy public track.
Definitely NO Southern Hospitality!
Arrived at the course only 9 minutes prior to tee time. Merritt Parkway and art 8 were parking lots due to traffic accidents. Ran over to the starter and explained the situation, he wanted to hear none of it and responded “Someone WILL BE on the tee at 9:50”. Ran into the pro shop to pay, only to find 2 young cashiers, but only 1 register working, with a line of 6 people waiting to pay. We started with only two players cause the other was stuck in traffic. We kept up with the group in front of us, usually waiting on just about every shot. When we made the turn from 9 to 10 a group of four cut in between our groups. They were playing ridiculously slow and soon had two holes open in front of them. I phoned the pro shop and they said they would send the ranger. We watched the ranger arrive and never get within 50 yards of that group. He drove off after 5 minutes and didn’t resolve anything. There was a lot of young teens playing and working. It seemed like the was a lot of unorganized mayhem!
Good course for the money
It's an interesting layout that is in fair condition. The greens are a little slow with a mixture of grasses. The fairways and rough are a little rough.
Just awful muni conditions
Not worth the time… historically in bad condition, worse than it’s ever been. Greens may be running at a 3. No maintenance. Go somewhere else.
Playing the black
The course is very nice in good shape for this time of year. Staff was friendly teed off on time
Nice course
The course.
Was in very nice shape for this time of year. Very challenging, greens were a nice pace. Pace of play was very good.
