Great to be Back
Had not played Dub’s for many years and returned to a course in great shape. Pace of play was average for a Sunday morning and we were paired with another twosome. Greens were soft and the fairways in good condition especially considering the recent heat. Will be back for sure.
Excellent Condition
With this being my first time playing Dub's Dread, I don't have much to compare it against. However, the course seemed to be in excellent condition. The tee boxes were a bit beat up, but that's almost to be expected at this point in the season.
-Practice Facilities-
I started my visit to Dub's Dread by visiting the practice facilities. After having grabbed my cart, which was honestly the best cart I've seen at almost any golf course (public or private) in the Kansas City area, I was a bit surprised when I arrived at the range. The grass was super beat up, patches were overgrown, and there didn't seem to have any organization to it. You have two sets of mats you can hit off of and the 18 hole runs up right behind you, close enough where a small over faded ball could easily come flying in your direction without the people playing being able to see you to call out, "ball right!" Some of the flags placed on the range for distance were also in awkward positions that made it so that you couldn't actually see your ball landing to know if you were hitting your distances well. As I worked my way up my bag into my longer clubs I actually started getting a bit worried about hitting my driver. I ranged out a tree that was maybe 10 or so yards away from a par 3 tee box at only 280 yards. This meant I could easily have over cooked a draw with my driver right at anyone who was down on the tee box. It didn't look like hitting it the other direction was much safe either due to have a par 5's fairway butting up against the back side of the range. I only hit about 2 or drives before I just felt to uncomfortable about the possibility of hitting someone to continue hitting it. One thing that I didn't really spot was a good short game area, so if that's your thing, you might need to ask if they have one because I didn't really see one.
-On Course-
The course looked and played great, the only problem I could really pick out would be the tee boxes being a little beat up and certain small portions of the course that should have been staked out as "ground under repair". As I said earlier, the buggies are some of the best I've used at any course in the KC area. There's plenty of storage area for balls, tees, drinks, personal items, and range finders. They also came equipped with a JBL audio system that you could connect to with Blutooth to listen to your music. This could be annoying to some players as I know not everyone enjoys listening to music on course but for those of us younger golfers (I'm only 30), it's a nice touch. I never used it because I bring my own blutooth speaker with me so I can't really speak on how loud they get or how well they work. The fairways on course were nice and tightly mowed and ran out about 10-15 yards. The greens however were a bit confusing. Some how, they rolled like they were super dry but approach shots played super soft. I had multiple wedge shots in that plugged into the greens. Divot tools just slid right into the soil and the divots were easy enough to fix, it just left you scratching your head a little bit. Speaking on divots, the greens were actually better than I had expected for it being a public course. Often times I find myself having to fix my divot plus two or three additional that are in my line. However, even on long putts (and with the size of these greens, you'll have plenty of long putts) I didn't find myself having to fix too many others that weren't mine or part of my group. I did have a playing partner in my group who didn't like the size of the greens. They are often very large compared to some other courses we play, which helps those who lack wedge accuracy but can be punishing if you have a hard time figuring out the greens. I didn't have too much of a problem reading the greens and my ball seemed to roll pretty true. A few ridges here and there left you scratching your head but those were pretty few and the greens were generally on the easier side to read. I'd say they were running around a 9 when we played yesterday.
-Pace of Play-
Myself and the 3 others I played with yesterday aren't the fastest of players but we do like to keep pace of play up quite a bit. The two other male players and I, when playing solo can often finish 18 in under 2 1/2 hours. Yesterday we had a beginner female golfer with us and still found ourselves waiting on the tee box almost every hole due to groups in front us taking forever. We started our round at 11:30, right on time, we didn't finish the 18th until 4:30. That's a 5 hour round, which is slower than my slowest rounds on my home course. There also weren't any martials out on course doing anything about pace of play, the only ones we spotted were out there on a couple of blind tee shots letting you know when you were free to tee off.
-The Turn and the 19th Hole-
Unfortunately, due to Covid and the length of our round, none of us stayed for drinks and tried to push right through the turn. However, I did go in to fill my Yeti with some ice water after the round for my drive home and the facilities looked nice. They had plenty of TV's inside to watch the 3M being played currently which looks like it would normally draw a pretty good size crowd of regulars. It almost gave off small sports bar vibes. The patio was fairly large and had lots of seating which was filled with plenty of golfers enjoying a few drinks after their rounds. The only complaint around the clubhouse in my opinion is the layout of the cart paths going around it and a blind turn in the parking lot that led to a guy almost driving a cart full speed into my car as I was leaving. There are a lot of small blind and tight turns that easily get congested and the cart pickup/return area was very tight. This didn't really take away from the overall experience though.
-Final Thoughts-
Would I return to this course? It's not at the top of my list but if someone asked if I wanted to head out that way I'd gladly join them. I just would't worry about heading to the driving range and would instead opt to spend my time on the putting green.
First Time
Was very impressed by the course. It’s in very good condition, especially the greens. They were very receptive but a nice speed. The course is a good challenge with very few straight and flat holes.
Not a fan of the Bluetooth speakers on the carts. Several guys playing music in the carts and one guy blaring a comedian from his cart while playing alone. Not the best idea for golf carts.
Only thing about the course was it felt like just about every hole is a dogleg. It feels a bit repetitive in that way.
Great course. Plan to play it many more times.
Love this place
What can you say. This coarse never disappoints. Always a challenge and fun to play.
Great Track
Love this course. Challenging but fair to all levels. It has a tee box for any handicap. The layout is fun making you have to think your way around and not making the same shot all the time. Worth the time to go play. Great staff in clubhouse and pro shop too!
Very nice fairways and greens I would definitely play there again and will in the future very nice set up and staff was very helpful and informative
Great Golf
Played 18 with a buddy who had never played Dub's before. The course was in great shape, they put us off as a twosome which made for an enjoyable round with my buddy.
Solid course
Course and greens in very good condition. A windstorm from the previous week had limited play on one hole. Great carts too.
Course Looked Good - just played slowwww
Maybe it is the new norm but I was sandwiched in between a 4-some in front of me that was following a 5-some with a single behind me and a 4some behind him and it was a sit and wait to hit day all day. Longest round that I may have ever played.
