So Sad
I remember growing up and playing this beautiful gem of a course called Elkhorn. In the 70's and the 80' this was an immaculate little course with pristine fairways manicured tee boxes and beautiful white bunkers. Great greens that were challenging and really made you think. I can't believe what has happened to this course. I was stunned at how bad this course has gotten. It broke my heart. It was not a bad experience, but a sad one. I will.never return to play this course and that makes me sad
I fear that it won't be around much longer if someone doesn't put some money into it.
Not the same course it was 10 years ago. So sad.
This course used to be a gem that was totally worth the drive and cost to play. I felt like I was visiting a dying friend on hospice and saying goodby for the last time. I definitely isn't owned by the family that built it anymore.
Challenging but not in good shape
The setting is beautiful but the condition of the course was not very good. I had heard some really good things about this course but was disappointed in the condition it was in.
DISSAPOINTMENT
I had heard for a few years now how great this course was. I took my father as an early Fathers Day gift. The tee boxes were horrific. The grass resembled curled potato chips in both color and crispness. Terrible! The fairways were very nice, best part of the course. Nice views of surrounding hills snuggled in a lush valley setting. The greens were not horrible but it would have been nice if they had used a blower to rid the greens of some of the seed pods that had fallen in the last, say, month.
Elkhorns Water issues
The course had no water jugs, the temperature.was very close to 100 degrees.
When trying to maintain a course, the grass needs to be watwred as well.
Poor cart paths
Work needs to be done on cart trails to keep carts in shape! We had a cart that brakes were poor #34. The other cart had no power!
Elk Horn
Beautiful place to play, quiet, scenic. Staff not very friendly, maybe that's why nobody golfs there.
Hidden Gem (literally)
Great course nestled in scenic treed location. Fairways are tight but playable if you can manage your drive.
Greens are in great condition putt true and ball will stop or draw effectively.
Be sure to track the pin locations on the Scorecard and not the flag color. Pin placement is coded on the scorecard.
Some holes play long and some play short. Play with a local who has course knowledge and ask questions on how to play the hole. Tough par 3's with little room for error .
Best scores will be rewarded to smart play not aggressive play.
Excellent!
If I had one last round of golf to play in Oregon, this just might be the place to do it. I've played the finest courses in the US (Cypress Point, Pinehurst #2, Pacific Dunes, and Oakmont, to name some) and played at a competitive level. This course is as enjoyable a layout as I've seen, set in an incredibly beautiful place. To play well requires imagination and shot shaping. There aren't many amenities, but if you want excellent golf, you must visit Elkhorn
Need a Marshal
Nice course, but the experience was bad due to 2 foursomes that were flying a large WSU flag, were drunk, playing boom boxes loudly enough to be heard from across the course, yelling loudly enough to be heard over the boom boxes and playing at a pace that made us take 3.5 hours to play the back nine after we caught up with the pile following them. The course did nothing about it. I don't think I will able to get my wife to make the trip up there again.
Glad we played
Pretty course but very difficult and unforgiving. Any shot a few yards off the fairway is gone. Always wanted to play this course, but will probably not go back. Very slow, and no marshall to move people along. Very limited beverage choices.
Lack of maintenance is showing
I keep looking for a reason why I would want to go back to this course, and haven't found one yet. A beautiful setting, but the course is losing its' appeal.
BEST GREENS ALL YEAR
I used to play this course all the time when it first opened. I was in the original men's group, even though I live in Portland. Myself and my friends played the original 9, five times one day.
This is one of THE most unique golf experiences you will ever have. On the drive up, it's so remote, yet a little over an hour from Portland. But one can't help thinking "Who would think to build a golf course in this valley, so hidden from from the beaten path?
This course is unbelievably scenic, and the greens are as good or better than I've ever seen them, especially on the back nine, which is the younger of the two nines. Although the course has tightened up significantly over the years, there are ample tee locations so that even the novice or occasional golfer can get around it and have fun.
But it's really the setting, and the design that are the draw here. There are some incredibly imaginative holes on this course, and it's just fun to play. Plus, Detroit lake is not far, and there are fishing holes on the Santiam and North Fork of the Santiam close by, as well as nice campgrounds. If you have never played this course, you really need to bucket list it. It's a rare treat you'll never forget.
Bring enough golf balls!
Enjoyed the golf once I got away from the CRANKY staff in the club house! I haven't played that course in about 15 years and I was looking forward to spending the day there. When I first walked in the club house the young lady behind the counter never looked up from her computer to greet us. A gentlemen got up from his seat to my left and we, the customer, was an annoyance to him! I asked for a different golf cart and he said " great! you're just creating more work for me" Not the best experience for two golfers driving almost two hours to play "their" course.
Great...as expected
Another beautiful round at Elkhorn. Nearly perfect conditions on a well-maintained course edged up against Opal Creek Wilderness.
Pleasant Experience
Beautiful vistas, excellent greens, course knowledge would be a plus. high recommendation
Wonderful golfing day
Excellent value. Bring extra balls!! Course was in excellent condition.
Beautiful day for golf
The course was in great shape as always. This is one of my favorite courses to play.
awsome day
no waiting and in outstanding shape! a nice drive from portland up in the woods almost should not be there
Quiet, relaxing round on a beautiful day.
Long drive from Portland, but worth it on a beautiful sunny spring day....especially for $10. The course was in nice shape - especially the greens - but the "clubhouse" was incredibly bare, particularly for post round snacks.
Agree totally having just golfed this course on Thursday. This once magnificent course is in terrible shape, obviously unwatered the entire summer. Doubt it can return to its former glory
