Our favorite course in Oregon
The location of the 4 tee boxes make this a great course for a mixed group. There's a tee for every level of player. Water and extreme roughs on nearly every hole make in necessary to bring some extra golf balls for each round. Shots over water and canyons make for a challenge and interesting scenery plus the drive out to the course is through a beautiful area. All in all, this is
one of our favorite courses in Oregon.
super fun
had an out standing time, the staff was super friendly, super fun course.
Real Gem!
It's hard to describe what a great golf course this is - carved out of a beautiful forest in central Oregon. It was cold the day we played and there was frost on many greens and fairways. But everything was in great shape. Elkhorn must be one of the best kept secrets in golf. Thank you Golf Now for making it available to businessmen who travel.
Beautiful place to play
The course is a real treat but you need to keep it play, or bring lots of golf balls. The course is much more difficult than the rating, and plays longer than the listed yardage.
Accuracy is a must.
excellent weather for October made the round even better. One muse keep the drives in the fairway or else.Challenging par threes,This coarse excellently utilizes the natural contours of the land to make it a challenge for all golfers.I highly recommend this coarse to all..
Extremely Challenging!
To whom it may concern,
The quality and challenge of Elkhorn Valley Golf Course is exceptional and extreme. In addition to perfection, if you miss any fairway at all you're penalized for a lost ball. First hand I know (Statesman Journal) it has two holes (10, 11) that are among the most difficult holes of public courses in the State of Oregon. If you're a beginner I recommend playing the closer tee boxes.
Elkhorn is tucked away deep in mountainous/forested terrain at the foot of the Oregon Cascades. The fairways and greens were fast and perfect when we played October 12. We paid $15.00 each for 18 holes through Golf Now and it is the very least I can do to write a review to show my appreciation. Last but not least, the staff was very accommodating and friendly.

Great test of golf.
Multiple tee choices give all levels of golf a challenge w/o being excessive. Undulating greens continue the challenge after successful navigation from tees. Colored flags and additional yardage markers could assist players with club selection and thereby encourage pace of play. Putting & chipping greens provide opportunity to prepare short game skills required, but seriously needs practice facility to warm up, even if only some mats to hit from & nets to catch balls. Pro shop needs additional food & beverage options, but staff very friendly. Drive from highway is 11 miles of beautiful scenery, so relax and enjoy it.
Elkhorn golf course review 9/22/2013
Nice course. Will want to come back next summer to play on a day that is less wet...
Elkhorn is my favorite course in the world!
I've been going up a few miles past Elkhorn to go swimming at the most beautiful spot in all of Oregon, on the Little North Fork of the Santiam River, since I was a fourteen year old in the early 1970's, before the course was even there. Soon after the course showed up I was quite surprised! I said "Hey look there's a golf course!"
Once I became enough of a golfer to play the original 9 hole course, I fell in love. We would play the 9 holes twice in a row, since it's a bit of a drive compared to city courses. Once I played a third round for 27 holes total because I just had to conquer that course!
Yesterday was probably the last great day of the Summer of 2013 and it was GLORIOUS!
I look forward to Elkhorn every year, and am so sad on those years when I can't get my friends to go with me. Elkhorn is the best. Bring plenty of balls though, if you can't hit it where you want to every shot. Enjoy!
Elkhorn Valley is a Gem
what a great experience some of the best greens i putted on this yr very uncrowed beautiful day if you get a chance play this you wont be disappointed
Excellent course
This course is in great shape, a hidden jewel! I'll play this course as often as time allows, it's a ways to drive from Salem but well worth it!
ONE MAN's DREAM
Even though Don Cutler the course originator and his family have sold the course...his legacy lives on. Think of a place that is in a beautiful mountain setting, has one of the best front nines in America, and is very affordable for you and your friends. Make no mistake, Elkhorn Valley Golf Course will create lasting memories.. Don't miss it.
very beautiful course with lots of trees..nice place to play and get away from it all..
challenging course to where you have to keep ball in play... best greens I have putted on all year..reasonable course to walk.. would definatly play it again..
Fabulous course!
The course is challenging and fun. There are canyons, lakes and wonderful views. The greens are well taken care of, as is the rest of the course. Have golfed about 100 different courses in several states and this course is still one of my top choices. It is out of the way but well worth the drive. You will not be disappointed.
Nice setting
Located out in the woods, Elkhorn is a nice place to get away from the noise of a lot of city courses. It is drive from Salem, about 45 minutes, but it is worth coming and playing this hidden oasis. The day I played it was not crowded at all and I was able to play at a really quick pace. The course is maintained and the greens are in great shape. I wish there was more shape to the fairways, first and second cuts in stead of everything just being mowed. Although on several holes it was still tight and challenging. In the pro shop I felt like I was interrupting the persons phone call and it felt like oh someone is here let me get them out of here so I can get back to what I was doing. Not a lot of friendliness going on here. Might account a little for the lack of players on the course. Overall worth the drive and time to play, won't go out of my way though to play here on a regular basis.
Keeps getting better
Great experience. Well worth the hour plus drive. I'll return soon.
Elkhorn Golf Course
course in the woods, very pleasant scenery. need to be straight off tee box. OB, you will lose the ball. challenging. nice change of pace to regular courses.
fun day
excellent greens, fairways a little spotty, bunkers very poor, missed seeing the fountain on 3, didnt appreciate a 4some on 10 when we made turn, all in all a nice day though.
A Great Experience
Elkhorn Valley GC is a course that everyone must play at least once. It is challenging, narrow, filled with hazards, and lined with trees.
The greens were in great shape, especially for July, and I was impressed with the care the staff took when handling the entire course.
There is a lot of distance between greens and tees so it is recommended to use a cart. The course itself is not long, but the cart definitely helps.
I only ran into a few issues at Elkhorn:
1) Our golf cart broke down halfway through the first hole - We only had to walk half the hole to pick up a new cart, but it was a hassle. The staff member acted as if the situation as quite common.
2) We were stuck behind a best-ball tournament, which is understandable, but I wish the course would have adjusted tee times appropriately.
Other than these small issues this was a great experience.
See the information below under "your review"
The course is not fair. No opportunity to recover shots off the fairways, in most cases, because nothing but trees and or brush where you can't recover. 1st and 10th holes don't really allow for a second shot to the green after a drive to around the 150 because of water ditches in front and nor room in back of greens for recovery. A beautiful setting, which is what I suspect attracts many of their players. Greens fairly well maintained. (I only lost one golf ball in the woods, but average golfer may have more problems in that regard).
