Natanis Golf Course - Arrowhead

My favorite course in the area to play. The Tomahawk course is the tougher of the two 18 hole courses here. The holes have ponds in play on three holes and most of it is routed through wooded areas. There are several caries over ponds or environmental areas but the course plays relatively short unless you play the tips. Greens are usually in good shape and roll true. Very enjoyable place to play a round of golf.

My friend and I had both heard good things about this 36 hole course. We found it on a day the Tomahawk, considered the better of the 2 tracks, had a shotgun event, so we gave the Arrowhead a go. The woman in the pro shop had an uncharacteristic to Maine, unfriendly personality, but we made it to the first tee otherwise unscathed. We found a series of do-it-yourself designed holes on what must have been an old farm. Most of the holes had no real interesting or challenging design features and seemed to resemble each other. There were a few exceptions. The 6th is a downhill, drivable par 4, with a beautiful pond view. Then you go up the same hill for the par 3 7th. The back 9 is carved out of a hillier, wooded parcel and is very low and wet. The short par 5 17th is a mind bender. You cannot fathom where to hit to from the tee and once the new trees grow in, it will be even crazier. Take a ride up to assess the possibilities before teeing off. The 18th tee crisscrosses with another hole from the Tomahawk, so beware on this final tee shot or else it may truly be your final tee shot. The course is fairly well kept, but has far too much clover and weeds in play. Most able golfers will find it too short and unchallenging. It has a good local following, but travelling golfers may do better elsewhere. The 19th hole was very sad, featuring pre made sandwiches, pizza and chicken nuggets that all would be better suited for a middle school cafeteria. I may go back someday to try the Tomahawk course. I will keep an open mind and see if it rises over this little brother.
