Amazing layout
I’m not sure why it took me so long to realize what an absolute gem this course is. I’ve played in a few scrambles here over the years and never appreciated Waterville CC until yesterday.
The course’s history dates back to the early 1900’s and has been modified a couple times - including some work by Geoffrey Cornish. The routing is strong with lots of variety and you’re rarely aware of golfers on other holes. There’s not a lot to view except the beautiful woods that virtually every hole weaves through.
Conditions yesterday were magnificent. The greens were a little wet which probably slowed them down a hair but they were plenty fast for someone who didn’t know the breaks. The par 3’s are stout but only 2 par 5’s (both on the front). The back tees are only 6301 so being a big hitter is not required. Lots of elevation changes though nothing too dramatic but figuring accurate yardages to pins takes some effort.
It’s definitely on the pricey side if you’re not playing with a member but if you’re in shape ditch the cart as it’s very walkable and save a few bucks.
Bonus tip: since I didn’t have time to eat there I stopped in at The Gouda Boys just down the road. The Mac N Cheese with brisket is as good as the golf course and maybe better.
