Very, very slow
I have played this course four times now with the same experience each time: very nice, very challenging course, but unbearable to play. The average player on this course cannot handle the narrow fairways, blind shots, and many uphill fairways, and spends a lot of their time in the woods looking for their ball. Add this to a clientele that is notorious for taking a very long time for every shot and the fact that there is rarely a starter, and you're looking at 5 plus hours of golf. Today was the fastest of the four rounds, a Thursday 11:00am tee time, and it took 4 hours and 40 minutes. On a Saturday, forget about it: I once quit on the 14th hole at five hours.
That being said, I once complained about this, and while the pace of play has never improved, I was given a free round by the staff. Very nice staff, very nice course, unbearable golfers.
Not worth it any more to me. Too many good courses around.
Good
Starting from Back9 might be better when crowded. Green are very much tilted hitting the green over the flag will cost you some putts.
A challenge but fun
Challenging yet fun...would play it again in future
Good value, but an odd course
This course is getting better under new management, but the layout still leaves some head scratching holes. There are a ton of elevation changes leaving awkward approach shots. The greens are also incredibly slow.
Great for the money
I live in Florida, therefore it was nice playing at a course that has northern trees and foliage! I was paired up with two nice guys. I would go back!
Where to begin?
It took 20 + minutes for them to find a cart for us to use. I checked in for our 3:32 tee time around 3:20. We hit our first shots at about 4:00. The pace of play was outrageous. We had to wait a good 5-10 minutes on each tee box and at each of the shots following. Long story short, we got in 18 holes in 5 hours. Had to stop because it was dark. I guess you get what you pay for, but man I was not expecting that.
Redgate
Price was great but course was in bad shape, greens had not been cut in a week at least.
Redgate continues to struggle
Nearly shut down several years ago, Billy Casper golf took over from the city and has made some minor changes. More friendly staff, big new outside deck, new pro shop. I don't however see much improvement in the course itself. Bunkers are in horrible shape, cart path are still very rough, greens aren't being maintained well. They've also lowered their pricing though and it's a good value. Still a very average course.
Thank you for your feedback. New staff in place. Come see the course, we're in great shape.
Warmly,
Billy

not worth it
Reserved the early bird, breakfast and cart package for myself and the wife. After checking in and paying, I was informed that breakfast was not available, that cafeteria was not open yet and to check-in with receipt during or after the round.
There was no starter on first tee and people in front and behind us were doing whatever they wanted. The course was full of singles and doubles and lots of waiting around.
Course and greens were in decent shape (Hole #4 had temporary teeing area).
After the round we went to the cafeteria to use the breakfast portion of package, only to find out that it only includes a "breakfast sandwich" and nothing else. Partly my fault, as this was specified on the bottom portion of receipt but clearly I would have appreciated it if they would have just called it the "Breakfast sandwich and cart package".
Everything reminded me why I stopped going to Redgate. I will never return.
Not the same golf course
This course was once operated by the city of Rockville, Md. It was always in great shape from tee to green. Now that the course is run by Billy Casper Golf the course is weedy from tee to the greens. The greens have weeds, the sand bunkers are very very poor. Large rocks are even in them, and none are even raked. Hard as rock trying to get out of them.
Interesting layout, but needs work
This could be a nice local course. The holes are challenging, and require skill, but the course conditions are a great letdown. The greens are very slow, bumpy, and have weeds and crabgrass. The bunkers are so hard, they are on the edge of unplayable. Around the greens, there are lots of dead spots and holes, making the short game useless. Most tee boxes have little if any grass and are full of dead spots.
The layout is interesting, and require accurate driving. The course is hilly and the holes have distinct personalities.
The water was warm, and in some cases empty. The driving range may be the worst I have ever seen. Terrible shape, ugly, and not cared for, and the balls are shorts, so they are not realistic.
If the course were maintained well, I would go back, but there are many better choices in the area until that happens.
Nice course
Some very interesting holes. Love the hills. Would definitely play again. Pro shop, grill staff and starter were super friendly.
Pretty fun course
Red Gate is definitely a unique course. I had a good time there, but the par 5's ate me up. Some of the holes have "Pro Tips" for how to play the hole. I strongly advise to follow what they say. Some people may not like the way 2 of the par 5's are set up because they're more like island hoping campaigns. You have to play well placed shots to play the holes well, and you're pretty much playing for par. I found those holes kinda fun even though I didn't do too well on them. My overall experience was pretty good though, aside from me playing like garbage on the back 9.
SUnday Golf
A great day on the course. The course was challenging but at times rewarding. When we finished there appeared to be a shortage of carts. An addition of a few more carts to cater for peak times may be of benefit.
All up a great day out and I (we) will be back
Variety makes it Fun
The course has good mix of short and long holes at every type of hole, Par 3, 4 and 5. The rough and sand are fair. Overall a good value.
Don't be in a hurry
This is my first time playing this course, and I played in a foursome. Two of our four were running a little late, so we ended up teeing off a few minutes after our actual tee time. There was a guy playing by himself behind us, and we were about to let him through, but we caught up with the group ahead of us, so it's a good thing we didn't. Had we let him play thru, we would have been waiting on him instead. It was a Saturday afternoon, but the round took over 5 hours. Good thing we had nowhere else to be. I rate the Staff Friendliness 'Good' rather than 'Excellent', which is a shame because the cart girl was very nice, and the starter, I believe his name was Fred, was probably the nicest and friendliest starters I have ever encountered. However, in the pro shop when we paid for our round, the kid working the register pushed this Advantage Card on us so hard, I felt like I was at a used car dealership. After politely declining and telling him I'm not interested, he kept pushing, which was quite annoying. And I believe that contributed to our tardiness on the tee box, because he couldn't seem to take no for an answer. The course does have some blind shots, which they could do a better job of putting signs up to make first timers like myself aware of. Some of the par 3's are pretty short, which is a nice break from the longer par 5's the course has to offer. Overall, I would definitely play here again, although I would try to go on off-hours, so it didn't take so long to get in 18.
fun to play
numerous water hazards, uphills, downhills making the experience quite pleasant.
This course has good variety of holes
Course is under new management and getting into better condition. Course does not require length but good accuracy. Greens play slower than in years past. If you can, play on the weekdays versus weekend as an 18 hole round on weekend is typically five hours.
Great course!
Have played this course many times super track close to everything! :)
