Course #1 Photo submitted by u9313610 on 10/19/2022
Horrible conditions
The conditions of this course to horrible. You couldn't putt on the greens as they were just sand and dirt with large patches of weeds. The fairways were in even worse condition. Tee boxes were non existent. Will not be back to play here again.
Id play money to never play this course again
First time going out of my way to write a review and honestly, if they mark my name for future bookings and reject me - theyd be doing me a favor. This course is AWFUL. Fairways are cut the length of the rough, there is NO ROUGH and the greens are the length of the fairways. If you do manage to stripe on down the middle on a par 5 and need to hit a wood in, be prepared for a fat shot out the ROUGH (apparently their fairway). The amount of sandy patches on the greens mixed with crab grass spewing out of the green AT THE SAME TIME makes this course incredibly bad. Lastly, Ill do you one better for the reader - my home course is Pembroke country club and the conditions are milestones ahead of this. AND THAT SAYS A LOT. no offense to PCC. The Cups are cut like A$5 which makes it even more the reason to get angry after spending 50 dollars to play on this embarrassment. You'd be better off playing in someones back yard. Never play here.
Conditions were worse than poor
There are no fairways on this course, only unattended rough.
You lose your ball even when it’s in the fairway because of the grass and weed length.
I’d prefer to play in the rough at another course than the fairway of this one.
The greens were even worse.
Where there was grass it was long.
The majority of the greens were cratered and exposed with sand, pebble and rock.
This was the worst golf experience of my life.
I have been playing for over 30 years.
GROUNDSKEEPING
Never played on a course where they left grass clippings anywhere on the course. My ball shouldn’t be getting lost in grass clippings and having time wasted searching for a ball that landed just a yard into the rough or fairway. The greens were terrible, some greens were 70% dirt/sand, so of course the holes next to the club house all look good as for the other 16 holes, well just be ready for a surprise bunker on the green. The attendants also don’t do anything for groups ahead of you taking too long or having 8 players, each group heads out every 5 mins which shouldn’t have been the case. We were constantly being pressured by a group of walkers behind us while we had to wait for the group(s) ahead of us to stop messing around. The best thing about this course, it’s right off the highway.
Holiday early morning golf at Ponky
Played early morning, 9 holes on Course 2. Fairways were in good shape but tee boxes and greens were generally in rough shape. Pace of play was great and its a challenging course. The rates were super cheap!
Sell the course
Who ever is in charge of groundskeeping needs to pick a new career. Would it kill you to use a bag catcher? Put money back into the course.... such a waste
Bad greens
The course had bad greens water everywhere. I know it rained, but there is no drainage. I booked a cart, and they said they weren't available, so we had to walk the whole thing and my feet were soaked.
Needs attention
Before I state the obvious of the issues with this course I’ll say that we had a blast. This was my finance first time on the course and had only been to the range. She had so much fun and has brought it up for the last 4 days. To be fair this course glaringly has budget issues. The original #1 9 holes has tee boxes with no grass, turf missing on majority of greens in the 15-30 percent range, dips in multiple areas on greens as if my dog was trying to dig holes, fabric exposed in many bunkers, among other issues. The #2 course back nine was in much better shape but still needs some TLC. That being said it’s a great course for beginner level players who don’t care. The layout is fun and we will def play here again. The staff is so nice and appeared they were all more than happy to be at work. Even under the busy conditions of tee times galore. The range is small but more than sufficient to warm up on. Like I said before it has its pros and cons but the pros make this place worth a visit. Just don’t expect great playing surfaces.
A noticeable work in progress.
I played a round of golf on course 1 at Ponkapoag and I was impressed with the noticeable improvements . I thought the fairways were in decent condition. I was able to get some good shots off. There have been noticeable tree and tall grass trimming all around the course The greens were hit and mis, some good and some bad. And the tee boxes still need work. That being said for what I paid (hot deal) it was well worth it. The new golf carts are now all electric and fun to drive as well. I will be back, and I have to recommend this place to any cost conscientious golfer.
