Course #1 Photo submitted by u9313610 on 10/19/2022
Just not worth any type of money
Greens were nonexistent and course is worse than expected. Yes it’s cheap but rather spend a little more for a real round elsehwere
A Great Day
The course has improved conditions, it has the best layout I’ve seen in a long time, the overall impression is that I would play this several days a week if I wasn’t so old
Play this course if you dare!
It is difficult to truly put into words the course conditions. It had been a while since I last golfed at Ponky. The layout of course #1 is actually very good. What isn't good, are the conditions. Most tee boxes are in poor shape, but I can overlook that, as you will be hitting off a tee. Most fairways are not in good condition, but if you just want to hit some golf balls, I can even overlook that. What cannot be overlooked hits you when you get to the 1st green. These greens are unquestionably the worst greens I have ever experienced. Sand, dirt, weeds, rocks, and when you can find grass, it will be thick and uncut,
and definitely not rolled. Most sand traps are a mess also. If you are able to overlook these imperfections, you might enjoy this course. Best aspects of the course are the friendly staff, and pace of play, as we finished 18 holes in under 3.5 hours walking. I do not envision myself returning to this course. In it's current state, it is an embarrassment!
Potential to be a great course
Starter wasn’t in control so it was chaotic on the first tee. A few holes have temp greens which we didn’t know about. Group in front of us kept apologizing for slow pace but wouldn’t do anything about it and wouldn’t let play through. #1 is in much better shape than #2, greens were actually “green” and course was playable.
Budget-friendly, but course needs work
Check-in was great. The staff was great. Unfortunately some holes had awful putting greens. Some holes had fairways that looked more like extensions of the rough.
The greens are nearly unputtable with many bald spots and diseased patches. They aren't cut like a normal green. Therefore, the ball doesn't roll properly. Bring a sledgehammer instead of a putter. The fairways grass length is like most golf courses rough. The tee boxes barely have grass on them. The bunkers are either completely taken over by weeds or there's mounds of sand that have been just left there for months. A few hours of raking would fix it. Otherwise nice course.
Unacceptable
You expect $40 golf to be lacking in certain areas but this place is an abject failure as a golf course. There are no greens it’s crabgrass with holes in (some of) them. I don’t have anything good to say about the conditions of the course.
Ponkapoag course #2
Course #2 is in terrible condition. The greens, except for a few, were impossible to putt on. Clumps of weeds and bare spots. The fairways were like a pasture. Couldn't tell the difference between the fairways and the rough.
Not playable
Course is not worth any money. It’s unplayable - no fairways. Greens essentially have dirt bunkers in the middle of them. Charging any money at all to play this course is too much. It is essentially not a golf course.
