Old Style Course with Amazing Views of Lake Michigan
While this course is not going to blow you away in terms of setup or difficulty, it does have some of the best views I've ever encountered on the golf course. There are some 6 holes that lead to views of Lake Michigan, and they do NOT disappoint. Hole 16 also runs right next to a massive Dune which makes for a pretty unique golf hole. The views are what make the course worth the trip.
The course layout is relatively easy, but if you play it on a windy day (as I did) it will certainly make it more challenging. It appears they cut down a lot of the links style grass to make it more open, which led to lots of easy driving holes. There are a number of Par 4's that if you hit driver you can either drive the green or have a flip wedge into. That being said, there are a few holes on the back that have some tight driving holes protected by trees or water, where hitting less than driver would be advisable. Most of the greens are crowned and were pretty slow, but well maintained. 13 and 14 are probably the two best golf holes. 13 is a risk reward par 4 in that you can hit driver between the water hazards and have nothing more than a 20-30 yard approach. However, the prudent play is to hit a mid iron short of the first pond and play a 130-140 yard shot into the green. 14 is the best par 3 on the course. You hit right towards Lake Michigan, so it is usually going to play dead into the wind. It's longer and protected by bunkers. Requires a good shot to hit the green. A miss left goes off the cliff and down to the lake.
This is not going to be the best course you ever play in your life. However, the views rival or beat many courses I've played, especially since you go right up against the Lake. Twilight rates for this course are really affordable ($25-35) and make it a must play in the area.
Not a typical country club
This is a beautifully designed old course. It may be short, but you're tested by narrow tee shots and interesting greens. The routing is very good and doesn't really ever repeat itself as you'd expect from some country clubs. The use of the lake and a sand dune add variety and visual flair. I won't compare it to the course a few miles north, but if you're looking for a fun, solid, and inexpensive round with some views, look no further.
Really great value with views of Lake Michigan. Layout is average. Course has a ton of potential. Definitely worth it.
All the views for a lot less money!
When you think of great golf courses on Lake Michigan places like Arcadia Bluffs or Whistling Straits come to mind, but those courses are expensive. Manistee Golf & CC may not be a championship caliber course and is a short par 70, but for the money, you get some spectacular views and a fun little golf course to play.
The tee boxes and greens were in pretty good shape and the fairways were decent. There were definitely some areas of rough that needed a little TLC. Other than that, the course is a western Michigan gem and a great warm up for playing in the Lake Michigan wind should you be on your way to one f the other big boy courses in the area.
Fair to okay mid week course
Really nice views of Lake Michigan on several holes. Fairways played well, inconsistent watering. Some greens were damaged from the winter but no dirt showing. Traps were okay, not abundant. I wouldn't pay full price to golf here. It is an old country club!
Nice little course
We had cold, windy weather, but the staff was very friendly and helpful. The rough wasn't mowed and kind of scraggly. Fairways were decent and greens rolled well. The views were great and although short, the course was a challenge. I would come back, especially on a nicer day.
Great course
The course is challenging for a high handicapper, yet not so challenging that h/she wouldn't enjoy oneself. I highly recommend the course. The staff is very friendly.
Manistee G&CC
Nice course along the shores of Lake Michigan with beautiful views (#3,4,12&13)! Even though the layout is short, you must hit precise shots to score well. Also, the greens were super hard to read...don't play as much break as you think.
Not worth it
A northern michigan course is expected to be nice especially when the regular price is $50/18. I'm glad I didn't pay more than $25. The grounds were hard, we drove a few holes (not real challenging). But there was a nice hole on Lake Michigan that is great picture shot.
Stunning
Beautiful golf course located right on Lake Michigan shoreline. The staff is always super friendly.
Great views of Lake Michigan
Don't let the short length fool you--it's still a challenging course especially if there is a strong breeze off the lake.
Little gem of a course on Lake Michigan with incredible views
This is a marvelous golf course - a little short by today standards. The views of Lake Michigan are incredible with a sand dune as the rough on # 16. Be careful at # 15 and go right of the bird house not left as I did! LOL.
Only downside for our foursome was a few of the members acted like idiots when they hit into us but even they couldn't take away from the great course, views and apologetic staff. If you have the time stop by and play it if you appreciate and enjoy the lake views.
