Outstanding Course. Staff was great. Course was challenging and forgiving if you played safe. You have plenty of opportunity for losing balls if you get greedy. I will return soon.
Review of Chomonix
I REALLY appreciate how the course is taking the Coronavirus seriously. Everything was set up to maintain physical distancing. I played st Edinburgh USA where they went against our Governor's guidelines for courses and had no regards for the current pandemic.
At Chominix all the staff was friendly and helpful. Because of an injury I haven't played Chomonix for about three years. The greens are much better. Careful removal of selected trees made the course much more playable and fun.
Nice county run golf course
I hadn’t played Chomonix in at least ten years and was nicely surprised by the course conditions and value. It can feel very narrow at times so you better be hitting it straight. Driver is not needed or advised on some of the narrow bending par 4s. One green was a bit beat up others were in excellent shape and putted true.
Will be back again soon.
First round this year
Staff friendly golf carts very clean course in very good shape. i and my wife will be back to play. we are trying to get friends to join us for a round,
It’s got what you want...
Clean course, well groomed, friendly staff. Course layout gives you a good deal of variety. My only gripe, it’s busy, and they book it busy. You are either being pushed or waiting when it’s peak. If you’re good to wait for off peak, you’ll be super happy with this course.
Course Keeps Improving
During the past few years Anoka County has invested quite a bit of money making improvements to Chomonix Golf Course. Cart paths have been added and all the bunkers were renewed about three years ago. The bunkers are now in beautiful condition, allowing you to thump the ball out with a good degree of control. This year the course has unveiled two new greens, the par 3 6th and the par 4 17th, both of which previously were plagued by problems with water creating puddles and leaving bare spots that made it impossible to putt. The 6th has been raised, set up with two tiers (the higher tier at the back), and enlarged. The green is set at an angle to the tees, so it may be difficult to see how deep the green is from the tee. But depending on pin placement and tee placement, your club choice could easily be one of four different irons/wedges. The 17th has also been raised and enlarged. This 365 yard (from the back tees) dogleg left with lateral hazards both right and left is a real challenge. If you try to cut the corner and fall short you'll either be in the hazard or blocked out by trees. If you go too far right you'll either be in the hazard or leave yourself with a fairly long shot to the green. Par is a very good score on this hole. In a previous review I noted that Chomonix is one of my favorite courses and I'm pleased to see these improvements to the course. Hopefully, Anoka County will continue to make improvements, by addressing the water issue at the front of the 10th and 11th greens. Another possible improvement would be to add a fourth set of tees to bridge the gap between the white tees (6,221 yards) and the red tees (5,300 yards). The course is very walkable and the greens fees are very reasonable.
Needs a Redesign
Played the course this afternoon for the first time. To be honest, I've never seen a course do so little with so much (i.e. the natural scenery is beautiful). The whole track should be torn up and redesigned. There are a few nice holes, but way too many holes that are purely target golf. Number 5 (or 6), is the worst par 5 I've ever played, with two severe doglegs and trees too high to cut either one. Number 7 is an embarrassment to course design, as is number 18. About 4 or 5 greens were under construction, which I was not told prior to going out. The fairways and greens are both cut ridiculously long. It's a shame that this amazing piece of land is stuck with such a poorly-conceived course.
Almost a North Woods Course
Chomonix golf course is described on its website as offering a true North Woods experience. While this may be a slight exaggeration, the course is set in a regional park preserve and does make one feel that the urban environment has been left far behind. Water, woods, or both come into play on every hole. While the fairways are of generous width, getting too far afield will cost you. At 6,550 yards from the tips, you don't have to be long at Chomonix, but you do have to be straight. The thick rough is kept at a length that may make it hard to find a ball unless you're right on top of it. The previously mentioned woods or water line almost every fairway, or lurk beyond the green if you go long. Bunkering is minimal, as only three holes have any fairway bunkers, and most holes are guarded by only one or two bunkers around the green. Like the surrounding marshland, the course is mostly flat except for three holes on the back nine that have some slight elevation changes. These are the holes that have the most of that North Woods feel. Wild turkeys, deer, fox and other wildlife are often seen on these fairways. A few of the greens are slightly elevated above the fairway, but most are at the same level as the fairway. The greens do not have any severe contours, are mostly sloped from back to front, and roll relatively fast and true. At 303 yards from the middle tees and no large trees to contend with, the par 4 dogleg left 7th hole seduces many long hitters into going straight at the green. But if their ball doesn't carry 200 yards, it will find the pond that forms the left side of the dogleg. The short par 5 13th is another hole that long hitters love. With a straight fairway and only 445 yards from the middle tees, long hitters can easily reach the green in two. However, water on the right and woods on the left collect a lot of balls from those who overswing and push or pull their tee shots too far. In summary, Chomonix is a moderately challenging course that is truly fun to play. On the negative side, being set in marshland, the course does have some problems with soggy fairways and greens during rainy spells, leading to muddy spots on some fairways and on the 6th and 17th greens. However, I have heard that the management plans to rebuild those greens later during the 2016 season. Patrons may have to deal with temporary greens for a while, but the new greens will make a course that is truly a pleasure to play even better.
Fall golf is an easter egg hunt, even in the middle of the fairways.
Do not do a good job of keeping leaves picked up. Greens are inconsistent.
