A good public course by NJ standards
Been playing this course for years. Ever since they took over, Kemper Sports have been making improvements every year (cutting down lots of trees, improving drainage, new clubhouse, etc). Yes, pace of play can be bad, and yes, leagues can eat up weekend AM tee times, but it’s not as bad as some reviews would make it. Greens are large and in good shape. Clubhouse is new and is well-equipped. It’s the less popular sister to Galloping Hill. Not tricked out and the layout of Ashbrook is going to favor the average golfer than Galloping Hill. Be wary it rains—the course can get swampy and it will close even with what would appear to be an average downpour.
Do the owners not read the reviews
This course is absolute dog trash the fact the owners still charge 70 bucks to play at 4pm or even 70 bucks anytime is outrageous whoever makes the prices should be arrested for robbery the layout is trash the fairways patchy and the greens are trash the owners need to wake up
Worst Course in the Area
+Course is in poor shape.
+Cart path is a hazard
+Staff is not friendly
+Social distancing and staff face coverings are scarce.
+The Tavern restaurant is closed for private events more than it is open for golfers looking for a 19th hole.
Interesting course
Friendly and accomdating staff, greens in good condition, although it would be nice if golfers helped out with the green divits. Fairways nicely cut, wide fairways and challenging placements of the tee boxes. Nice course. Lots of nature allowed to grow. Though a little pricey for me, it's a nice play and I will be back.
It's the same song...
Extremely slow - marshalls are non-existent -they're retired individuals who just don't care and will combat any criticism with "it's above my paygrade", "fill out the post-round survey", "talk to Kemper/Freeholder's"
I hate that this course doesn't want to take substantive measures to combat slow play. Yes, you'll turn off (hopefully improve) certain individuals but being known as a 4:45+ course is worse, long term.
Absolutely not worth for out-of-county players. Go to Monmouth County.
Really nice condition
Played here a few times recently and the course is in great condition. Fairways good, greens rolling really nice and rough penalizing without being too harsh.
Reading some of the reviews I wonder do these guys have a clue what they are talking about? Probably too much time on the couch watching PGA and expecting tour conditions for there $32 green fee!
There are a couple of fairways that seem to get soft after rain, but of you hit the ball more than 150 yards you avoid the wet patches
All in all great course considering amount of foot traffic it gets. Only negative is pace of play. Again too many guys with yardage lasers.....when you have to use your laser 6 times on the same hole you may want to consider a different hobby! They should have rangers on the course pushing guys to play faster.
Very nice place
The starter was a little rude. Yelling at some golfers but everyone else was very nice. I would definitely play there again
Staff at the entrance is very rude
The old man at the entrance who checks the reservation is very rude and talks down to people. The rough is very long and it's very easy to lose balls.
Gotten better
The new putting greens are great, the course was nice, they are in the process of removing trees and putting in new irrigation to help drain the fairways that had a flood issue in the past. All in all had a decent round for the second time out all year and the staff was great.
Good course.
Organized and friendly golf staff upon arrival. Check in was simple and easy. Golf course plays long from the tips. The course is fairly straight forward with most features visable from the tee. Certain holes required layups over streams that cross the fairway. Greens while not fast were fairly smooth. Rough can be quite deep in spots.
Carts
My rate stated cart included. Upon arrival, was informed by the starter no carts will be used. What did I pay for.?
Shiiiip show
It can not rain for 2 months and the place is still a mud pie. Half of the fairways are atrocious, 4-5 are simply unplayable. Outrageous that they charge $60+ for a round here. Absolutely no shame. Sad part is it would be a nice course if it was looked after properly. Don’t waste your time/money here, plenty of decent courses in the area.
10 Years Playing Here- Never Been More Disappointed
I have been playing Ashbrook for over 10 years, and I have never been more disappointed playing there than I have been this summer. The course is in horrible condition, and it's a shame, because it is a great place when maintained. I recently played and took a cart, but was not informed until I got on the course that it was Cart-Path Only. I felt completely ripped off that a course could actually charge full price for taking a cart when you can't even take it on the fairway. That logic makes no sense to me. The "players assistant" was extremely over the top and forceful when calling me to get back onto the cart path which was really uncalled for. Also the restaurant is a nice place, but I don't understand the music choice. The crowd is an average of 40-60 yrs old roughly and they have rap music blasting the whole time. They need to change that, it's awkward.
Very Disappointed - I wouldn't play this course for free!!!
I was very surprised how bad the condition of the fairways and some of the greens. I paid $66w/cart as an out of county twilight rate at 5pm on a Wednesday. When I complained about the rate the young man behind the resigter tried to justify the rate comparing the rates from Morris , and Monmouth county courses.. The difference being the course conditions in those counties and some of the best in the state. I see the new club house looks fantastic and the 18 hole green looks great. But when I got on the course I felt ripped off. I wish I would have taken pictures. AsH Brook should be a shamed .
Gross
I rarely write reviews... I've avoided this course because I played it several years ago and remember it being wet/muddy and having terrible lies. Today I gave it another shot due to convenience for my buddies. Wow, how could anyone pay full price to play this is beyond me. Pretty much a shag field. Wet and muddy. Broken cart paths. Inconsistent grass and bare lies. Actually rocks right under the grass in some fairways. I understand that its November but conditions in other courses I played recently are far superior.
The only thing it had going for it was that the green were in good shape and the sand traps were in great shape.
Somerset county courses look like country clubs compared to this. Even for the $51 dollar deal I got it was still poor value.
Great conditions/layout but will be better after new clubhouse is built
Overall the course is in great shape, well maintained with a fun but flat layout. If you play from the black tees the course can play pretty long. The only thing that would keep me away from this course is the lack of a clubhouse/driving range/practice green at the moment. Currently they operate out of a temporary trailer as the pro shop, however this will change once the new clubhouse is built. As far as the practice facilities go, I would hope they install a putting and chipping green with all the money that is being put into it. I talked to the staff and was told that the clubhouse construction should be done in about 18 months which essentially means the 2019 season. If you're not concerned with the lack of a clubhouse and practice facilities at the moment, I would absolutely recommend playing here.
Relatively flat but long course
Major construction is currently being done so it's unfair to totally judge the course on this particular day. Big hitters might find course easy because of the wide fairways. Overall it has a nice layout and it's a fun course. Pace of play was pretty decent for a Sunday.

What happened I have been South Carolina for 16 years. I played Ashbrook hundreds of times, and I can’t believe these reviews. What happened
